Sie lernen, welche Datenbanken bei speziellen Problemstellungen sinnvoll zu benutzen sind und Sie werden sehen, wie man sich spielerisch einer Datenbank und damit den gesuchten Informationen nähern kann. Wenn Sie nur spielen wollen, fangen Sie Diskus-Fische in unserem Online-Spiel. Das Tutorial finden Sie unter http://discus.tu-harburg.de." Das mit obigem Text den Kunden der Universitätsbibliothek der TU HamburgHarburg angekündigte Projekt DISCUS (Developing Information Skills & Competence for University Students) hilft, den roten Faden durch die Informationsvielfalt zu finden und weiter zu verfolgen. Das modern gestaltete, modulare Online-Tutorials führt Studierende in Deutsch oder Englisch spielerisch in Grundlagen zur Informationskompetenz ein. Fallbeispiele vermitteln über praxisorientierte Aufgaben Kompetenzen in der Nutzung einschlägiger Informationsquellen wie Aufsatz-, Stoff- und Patent-Datenbanken. Neben der Kenntnis effizienter Recherche- und Navigationsstrategien umfasst Informationskompetenz vor allem die Kreativität, den eigenen Informationsprozess bewusst und bedarfsgerecht zu gestalten.     Abstract
    Die Microsoft Encarta sieht die Geschichte Palästinas aus einer einseitigen Perspektive. Wer in alten Zeiten etwas über die Welt erfahren wollte, kaufte sich den legendären "Brockhaus", Meyers Konversationslexikon oder das "Große Bertelsmann Volkslexikon". Derartige Bücher waren auch innenarchitektonisch wertvoll, weil man sie als Zeichen der Bildung, gemessen in Kubikmetern, in der Schrankwand gut sichtbar platzieren konnte. Nachschlagewerke waren praktisch "für die Wissensbedürfnisse des bürgerlichen Alltags". Für den bürgerlichen Alltag mit dem Computer, der von Windows-Produkten wimmelt, bietet sich heute die Microsoft Encarta als Compact Disk an, eine Enzyklopädie des Wissens für den Hausgebrauch. Nur steht dort an manchen Stellen grober Unfug. Und wenn es um Israel geht, fragt man sich, ob die in der deutschen "Encarta" vertretenen Thesen nur schlecht redigiert sind oder ob Microsoft anti-israelische Vorurteile bewusst fördern will. Das jüdische Portal haGalil spricht sogar von "Geschichtsverdrehung unter enzyklopädischem Deckmäntelchen"

    Abstract
    Summarises the findings of apilot project at the Austrian Planning centre for Academic Libraries to assess the ÖZDB-Compactsystem on CD-ROM, the first system for serials on CD-ROM to be used in the German speaking countries. The system makes available 47,713 titles from Vienna, Graz, Linz and Salzburg university Libraries locally on an Apple Macintosh computer. The firm was able to provide information about CD-ROM and to supply the hardware for the 6-week project. The whole programme was prepared centrally. It was possible to call up records both by title and by institution responsible, and of the desired degree of specificity. The systems allows the additional advantages option of CD-PAC (Compact Disc Public Access Catalogue) wich can be used in conjunction with the already established BIBOS system.

    Abstract
    Der folgende Vergleich von vier Zsn-CDROMs bezieht sich auf drei Produkte, die aus dem 'Online Computer Systems, Inc. (OCS = Bowker; Reed-Konzern) nämlich "Boston Spa Serials" (BSS) der British Library, "ISSN Compact" (ISN) der ISDS-Agentur zu Paris und "Ulrich's" (ULR) aus dem Bowker-Verlag, außerdem auf "Myriade" (MYR) vom Centre National du Catalogue Collectif National. Die einzelnen Vergleiche erfolgen auf zwei Ebenen: Datenbanktransparenz (Funktionalität, Bereichssuche) und Datenkonsistenz. Zusammengefaßt lauten die Ergebnisse: die Datenbankenkonsistenz läßt allenthalben zu wünschen übrig; die Datenbanktransparenz der drei OCS-Produkte ist höher als die von MYR; die Funktionalität der zwei Verlegerverbandsprodukte ISN und ULR ist weit überlegen jener der beiden Bibliotheksprodukte BSS und MYR. Eine wissenschaftliche Bibliothek mit ansehnlichen Zsn-Beständen sollte daher ISN und ULR erwerben
