- Abstract
- Das Informationspapier beschreibt die digitale Nachverfolgung von wissenschaftlichen Aktivitäten. Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler nutzen täglich eine Vielzahl von digitalen Informationsressourcen wie zum Beispiel Literatur- und Volltextdatenbanken. Häufig fallen dabei Nutzungsspuren an, die Aufschluss geben über gesuchte und genutzte Inhalte, Verweildauern und andere Arten der wissenschaftlichen Aktivität. Diese Nutzungsspuren können von den Anbietenden der Informationsressourcen festgehalten, aggregiert und weiterverwendet oder verkauft werden. Das Informationspapier legt die Transformation von Wissenschaftsverlagen hin zu Data Analytics Businesses dar, verweist auf die Konsequenzen daraus für die Wissenschaft und deren Einrichtungen und benennt die zum Einsatz kommenden Typen der Datengewinnung. Damit dient es vor allem der Darstellung gegenwärtiger Praktiken und soll zu Diskussionen über deren Konsequenzen für die Wissenschaft anregen. Es richtet sich an alle Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler sowie alle Akteure in der Wissenschaftslandschaft.

- Abstract
- This article focuses on the use of the German language subject headings authority file SWD (Schlagwortnormdatei) in Austria and outlines how Austrian academic libraries' employment of the SWD developed in active cooperation with their SWD partners. The Austrian subject indexing practice turned to the SWD terminology based on the newly published German subject indexing rules RSWK (Regeln für den Schlagwortkatalog) in the late 1980s. An electronic workflow was developed. Soon it became necessary to provide a data pool for new terms originally created by Austrian member libraries and to connect these data with the SWD source data (ÖSWD, 1991). Internal cooperation structures developed when local SWD editorial departments began to exist. As of 1994 a central editor was nominated to serve as direct link between active Austrian SWD users and SWD partners and the German National Library (DNB). Unfortunately the first active SWD period was followed by a long term vacancy due to the first central editor's early retirement. Nearly all functional and information structures stopped functioning while local data increased on a daily basis... In 2004 a new central ÖSWD editor was nominated, whose first task it was to rebuild structures, to motivate local editors as well as terminology experts in Austria, to create a communication network for exchanging information and to cooperate efficiently with the DNB and Austria's SWD partners. The great number of old data and term duplicates and the special role of personal names as subject authority data in the Austrian library system meant that newly created and older or reused terms had to be marked in a special way to allow for better segmentation and revision. Now, in 2008, the future of Austrian SWD use looks bright. Problems will continue to be overcome as the forthcoming new online editing process for authority files provides new challenges.

- Abstract
- The FRBR model is by many considered to be an important contribution to the next generation of bibliographic catalogues, but a major challenge for the library community is how to use this model on already existing MARC-based bibliographic catalogues. This problem requires a solution for the interpretation and conversion of MARC records, and a tool for this kind of conversion is developed as a part of the Norwegian BIBSYS FRBR project. The tool is based on a systematic approach to the interpretation and conversion process and is designed to be adaptable to the rules applied in different catalogues.

- Abstract
- Graph-based ranking algorithms have recently been proposed for single document summarizations and such algorithms evaluate the importance of a sentence by making use of the relationships between sentences in the document in a recursive way. In this paper, we investigate using other related or relevant documents to improve summarization of one single document based on the graph-based ranking algorithm. In addition to the within-document relationships between sentences in the specified document, the cross-document relationships between sentences in different documents are also taken into account in the proposed approach. We evaluate the performance of the proposed approach on DUC 2002 data with the ROUGE metric and results demonstrate that the cross-document relationships between sentences in different but related documents can significantly improve the performance of single document summarization.

- Within the SOKRATES project Bavarian state, university and regional libraries are being equipped with locally automated systems. Regensburg university library has piloted the SISIS-OPAC-ONL version 1.0, adapted from the SINIX-based software SISIS-SE, with a machine readable stock of 1,66 million titles. - Abstract
- The decimal system is one system of a number of possible systems of ordering - and a very symbolic also. The ordering in ten chapters, themes, numbers, etc. you can find often in history. Indeed Dewey is not the genius-founder of decimal classification (against a number of authors)! For ordering and structuring separate schemes within a classification DDC creates a number of important negative solutions, e.g. in the main classes the 'lost' of physics and of medicine as special schemes: Nearly a catastrophe in the times of STM! And against an enormous tradition like Leibniz 1646 - 1716) et alii! Compare Bliss: The Bliss-Classification gives space for 6 numbers »sciences« in a context of 26 classes. Therefore the result in short: DDC (and UDC of course!) are »flowers« of the past, of the first decades of century 20! As a fact the Decimal Classification within the tradition of Melvil Dewey is not a final work: See the increasing number of newly constructed decimal classifications during the years 80 and 90 of the 20th century! Nevertheless DDC is a very great (problem and) solution in its development, internationality, reception - and edge-stone for many thinkers and librarians throughout the world - and an important example for modern translational work! Magda Heiner-Freiling has given to us a great stone for the edifice of Modern DDC: Requiescat in pace!
