    Abstract
As a cultural institution, the public library is charged with providing resources and services that fit the needs of a particular community and, if space and budgets allow, of serving as a resource and repository of the community's past. To fulfill its mission to the public, the library must attract that public by offering materials and providing opportunities for them to pursue their unique and varied interests and discover new things. By engaging individuals in the identification and preservation of their own personal, digital objects, it may be possible to increase awareness in, and commitment to, community repositories that reflect a community's diversity and that will serve all. A user education program that focuses on the importance of identifying and preserving the information and artifacts that are important, that addresses the technical aspects of preservation, and that creates awareness of the benefits and challenges associated with sharing personal information can result in a community repository that ultimately has more value for both the individual and the community.

    Abstract

    Abstract
Describes the creation of a database of citations in a narrow subject area from references downloaded from commercial databases, with customised added indexing, for access by end users. The database was on the subject of biological environmental and physical aspects of arctic wetlands and was compiled by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory. Databases were selected from the DIALOG and ORBIT hosts and downloaded records were loaded into a database using Pro-Cite software and searched using Inmagic search software

    Abstract
CDS/ISIS was used to develop a database of references for publications of the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), India. The CLRI conducts both fundamental and applied research into leather, leather products, leather auxiliaries and chemicals, and on the environmental and economic aspects of the leather industry. The database was designed to serve not only as a bibliographic tool but also as a component of an information system for management. Describes the construction of the database, the indexing technique chosen, the thesaurus provided, and problems encountered in the development of the database

    Abstract
Design aspects of bibliographic databases are of utmost importance for effective resource sharing and for providing better information retrieval services in libraries. Standard formats such as the Common Communication Format (CCF) may be adapted for the design of databases. Experience shows that some modifications to the CCF format may be more useful for manipulation of data for various libray operations. Proposes the design of a bibliographic database based on CCF for use in Micr-CDS/ISIS. Almost all the mandatory CCF fields have been adopted and a few new fields added for achieving better results. Formats for display of records conform to AACR2. Provides ample catalogue entries and sample indexes to illustrate how the proposed design helps perform various information retrieval operations in libraries. Modifications in the display of records may be achieved with little effort
