- Abstract
- Presents some of the problems of academics accepting the credibility of electronic journals and outlines the way in which the new electronic journal 'Glacial geology and geomorphology' is set up. Some findings with respect to acceptance of electronic journals are given. The importance of peer review to provide quality is very important, the look of the material less so. Academics still need to consider the electronic journal as a delivery system as much as an alternative to reading in the library or on screen. The flexibility of approach is considered to be important so that the whole system cana adapt to changing needs and technology

- Discusses the potential of the Guide hypertext system as an appropriate vehicle for the electronic publishing of periodicals. Briefly describes some of the systems that have been or are being used as vehicles for electronic periodicals, including a previous electronic periodical project using Guide. Describes the features of the Guide system and to the Guide prototype electronic periodical developed at the Computing Laboratory, Kent University at Canterbury, UK. Outlines the functions of the 2 main features of Guide; buttons and contexts; which are particularly useful for electronic periodical interface development; and describes tools to aid periodical browsing and reading that have been implemented or customized for the Guide periodical application. - Abstract
- This paper explores the usefulness of OpenAIRE, BASE, Recolecta, and Google Scholar (GS) for evaluating open access (OA) policies that demand a deposit in a repository. A case study was designed focusing on 762 financed articles with a project of FIS-2012 of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, the Spanish national health service's main management body for health research. Its finance is therefore subject to the Spanish Government OA mandate. A search was carried out for full-text OA copies of the 762 articles using the four tools being evaluated and with identification of the repository housing these items. Of the 762 articles concerned, 510 OA copies were found of 353 unique articles (46.3%) in 68 repositories. OA copies were found of 81.9% of the articles in PubMed Central and copies of 49.5% of the articles in an institutional repository (IR). BASE and GS identified 93.5% of the articles and OpenAIRE 86.7%. Recolecta identified just 62.2% of the articles deposited in a Spanish IR. BASE achieved the greatest success, by locating copies deposited in IR, while GS found those deposited in disciplinary repositories. None of the tools identified copies of all the articles, so they need to be used in a complementary way when evaluating OA policies.

Building on the work of an iSchools organization committee charged with exploring digital humanities curricula, we present findings from a series of related studies exploring aspects of DH teaching, education, and research in iSchools, often in collaboration with other units and disciplines. Through a survey of iSchool programs and an online DH course registry, we investigate the various education models for DH training found in iSchools, followed by a detailed look at DH courses and curricula, explored through analysis of course syllabi and course descriptions. We take a brief look at collaborative disciplines with which iSchools cooperate on DH research projects or in offering DH education. Next, we explore DH careers through an analysis of relevant job advertisements. Finally, we offer some observations about the management and administrative challenges and opportunities related to offering a new iSchool DH program. Our results provide a snapshot of the current state of digital humanities in iSchools which may usefully inform the design and evolution of new DH programs, degrees, and related initiatives.

- Abstract
- The nature and implications of electrocopying are summarised. After a brief review of the principles of copyright, the issue of whether electrocopying infringes copyright is debated. Publishers are aware of the threat that electrocopying poses to their business. The various options available to publishers for responding to electrocopying are summarised. Patterns of scholarly communications and the relationships between authors, publishers and libraries are being challenged. Constructive dialogue is necessary if the issues are to be resolved

- OCLC distributes several scholarly journals under its Electronic Journals Online programme, acting, in effect, as an 'electronic printer' for scholarly publishers. It is prototyping a WWW accessible version of these journals. - Abstract
- Describes an object-oriented model for paper-based multimedia documents such as textbook with embedded graphics. This model is the 1st step towards building a manageable authoring system for the Web, in which documents can be easily built, extended, truncated, reordered, assembled and disassembled on a computer basis, and the document components, can be reused. The model will also make accessible properties, which might be significant or important to the user, especially in searching or classifying documents, such as the document title and author.
