    Abstract
The Rutgers Inventory of Machine-Readable Texts in the Humanities was established in 1983 as a reference tool to help avoid duplication of effort for scholars and teachers in the humanities who want to use electronic texts in their work. The Inventory catalogers follow AACR2 and use the MARC format to provide bibliographic information about texts in all fields of the humanities, in any language, anywhere in the world, through the RLIN database. This article describes the information in the Inventory and some unresolved issues in relation to bibliographic control of electronic texts in the humanities

Notes that the development of standards for electronic resources in the humanities has not kept pace with the phenomenal growth in their provision and their different data formats, software tools, and access mechanisms. Abstract
In order to attract new scholars to computers in the humanities, some researchers suggest that poststructuralist methodology to analyze texts with computers, we must recognize the assumptions that motivate poststructuralist theories. Using such theories to find an ultimate meaning in literature would entail contradiction because these theories deny the possibility of an ultimate meaning in literature. Although computers can be used effectively in conjunction with current critical theory, they will never uncover the one true meaning of a text

    Abstract
In order to be effective, the scientific information chain has always needed intermediaries: author, publisher, agent, librarian and user; but these roles are changing and the scientific information chain is in crisis. The system must be modified and the electronic publishing provides a possible answer. Reports on the ICSU/UNESCO Conference of Experts on 'Electronic Publishing in Science', held in Paris in Feb 1996, which approved a series of recommendations. Identifies costs and benefits, and stresses the need for models of the use of electronically stored periodicals

    Abstract
Reviews the changes in publishing methods that electronic publishing and distribution will involve. Presents a publisher's view of the methodology needed to exploit the potential that online and othe electronic technologies offer. Discusses the role of the paper based journal in an era of electronic publication, and the ambivalence of scholars and of learned societies toward electronic information. Also examines the role of universities as they become partners of publishers in delivering published material to customers on the Internet: by hosting servers, by providing access to bandwidth, and by adding value through participation in the publishing process

    Abstract
In the field of electronic publishing, encyclopedias represent a unique sort of text for investigating advanced methods of navigation. The user of an electronic excyclopedia normally expects special methods for accessing the entries in an encyclopedia database. Navigation through printed encyclopedias in the traditional sense focuses on the alphabetic order of the entries. In electronic encyclopedias, however, thematic structuring of lemmas and, of course, extensive (hyper-) linking mechanisms have been added. This paper will focus on showing developments, which go beyond these navigational strucutres. We will concentrate on the semantic space formed by lemmas to build a network of semantic distances and thematic trails through the encyclopedia

    Abstract
Investigates the issues raised by mixing dynamic formatting and structured manipulation. Analyses the needs for specifying and implementing document layout and presents the state of the art in this area. Enumerates the desired requirements for interactive editing and formatting. Describes a method for implementing dynamic formatting in the Grif editor. Analyses, in the light of the experience gained with Grif, how standards can model dynamic formatting for structured documents
