    Abstract
    This article examines the entry of the major academic publishing houses into the WWW publishing. The study identified that during 1997, traditional academic publishers made significant commitments to putting tables of content, abstracts, and the full-text of their print journals on the Web. At the same time, new services and organizations emerged that could ultimately compete with, or eliminate, the need for certain segments of the industry. The authors suggest that these early experiments in Web publishing began unevenly with areas that needed improvement. The article concludes with a discussion about the implications of the traditional academic publisher's presence on the Web

    Abstract
    This article reveals different patterns of scholarly communication in the XML research field on the Web and in print journals in terms of author visibility, and challenges the common practice of exclusively using the ISI's databases to obtain citation counts as scientific performance indicators. Results from this study demonstrate both the importance and the feasibility of the use of multiple citation data sources in citation analysis studies of scholarly communication, and provide evidence for a developing "two tier" scholarly communication system.

    The papers presented at the 2002 Tri-Society Symposium an Chemical Information highlight questions we should consider as we develop new paradigms for information storage and retrieval systems. These new knowledge management systems will require novel approaches for data discovery, collection development, and the changing role of the librarian. This introductory essay discusses new and challenging integrated tools for data manipulation, the confusing and embryonic differential pricing and package deals for journal materials, and the changing role of the librarian in this rapidly transforming industry.

    Abstract
    The abbreviation SGML stands for Standard Generalized Markup Language. Markup refers to adding style and formatting information to text prior to publication. It is a standard because SGML has been accepted and published by the ISO, and is not owned by any manufacturer or software vendor. It is generalized because SGML is powerful and flexible, allowing it to be used in many applications. And it is a language that embodies a specification for creation of a set of rules to define the structure of a document. SGML has been designed to easily cross incompatible computer platforms, and its 'open' nature allows for relatively simple access and manipulation of an SGML conforming document by both people and computers. Above all, SGML proposes a new way of thinking about document creation and presentation, by shifting document style considerations to the publication process rather than the creation process. This is done by dividing the document into names, logical elements, to which any style can be later applied. A byproduct of this approach is the effective creation of a flexible database, providing further access to the data for information retrieval or for re-publication

    Abstract
    The Chemistry Online Retrieval Experiment (CORE), a 5 year research and development project, was one of the earliest attempts to make a substantial volume of the text and graphics from previously published scholarly periodicals available to end users in electronic form, across a computer network. Since the CORE Project dealt with materials that had already gone through traditional print publication, its emphasis was on the process and limitations of conversion and the use of the converted contents for readers. Reports results of a survey of users of the CORE system, initially at Cornell University, Chemistry Department and later throughout the campus. User data was collected using: detailed transaction logs, online questionnaires, online comments, interviews, and anecdotes. Typically, usage was found to be top heavy, with the top 35% of users accounting for 80% of usage and the top 20% of users accounting for 64,8% of total system use.     Abstract
    Reader awareness of article corrections can be of critical importance in the physical and biomedical sciences. Comparison of errata and corrigenda in online versions of high-impact physical sciences journals across titles and publishers yielded surprising variability. Of 43 online journals surveyed, 17 had no links between original articles and later corrections. When present, hyperlinks between articles and errata showed patterns in presentation style, but lacked consistency. Variability in the presentation, linking, and availability of online errata indicates that practices are not evenly developed across the field. Comparison of finding tools showed excellent coverage of errata by Science Citation Index, lack of indexing in INSPEC, and lack of retrieval with SciFinder Scholar. The development of standards for the linking of original articles to errata is recommended.

    Abstract
    This paper describes a series of three evaluations of electronic textbooks on the Web, which focused on assessing how appearance and design can affect users' sense of engagement and directness with the material. The EBONI Project's methodology for evaluating electronic textbooks is outlined and each experiment is described, together with an analysis of results. Finally, some recommendations for successful design are suggested, based on an analysis of all experimental data. These recommendations underline the main findings of the evaluations: that users want some features of paper books to be preserved in the electronic medium, while also preferring electronic text to be written in a scannable style.
