Den Bedarf an einem praktischen, überschaubaren Band, der sich den komplexen Belangen rund um das Thema digitale Archivierung widmet, möchte der Autor mit diesem Werk decken. Das Buch ist nicht als Gebrauchsanweisung für jene, die technische Maßnahmen zur Langzeitarchivierung durchführen müssen, konzipiert. Es will vielmehr eine Einführung in die Prinzipien, Strategien und Verfahren der Langzeitarchivierung sein, wie sie derzeit in Bibliotheken schon zum Einsatz kommen. Ross Harvey tut dies vor dem Hintergrund der Ergebnisse schon abgeschlossener und noch laufender Forschungen und praktischer Anwendungen in diesem Bereich. Dabei stützt er sich nicht nur auf Erfahrungen aus Bibliotheken, sondern auch auf Erfahrungen anderer Communities, für welche Langzeitarchivierung ein kritischer Punkt ist, wie zum Beispiel die Geowissenschaften. Der Autor beschreibt, dass die Archivierung digitalen Materials viele Herausforderungen birgt, für die vordigitale Modelle der Konservierung nur wenig Unterstützung bieten.
Er spricht ganz klar aus, dass es zu dieser Frage keine schnelle technologische Lösung geben wird. Die Erhaltung digitaler Archive über eine lange Zeit ist neben einer technischen vielmehr auch eine institutionelle Frage. Auch organisatorische und rechtliche Herausforderungen spielen in diesen Bereich hinein. "Preserving Digital Materials" widmet sich vier großen Fragen, die dem Buch auch seine Struktur geben: - Warum bewahren wir digitales Material auf? - Welches digitale Material bewahren wir auf? - Wie tun wir dies? - Wie managen wir die digitale Langzeitarchivierung? . . . Im gesamten Buch ist eine Fülle an Materialien und Studien eingearbeitet. Abgerundet wird dieser ausführliche, aber trotzdem übersichtliche Band durch ein Literaturverzeichnis, welches auch viele Online-Quellen enthält. "Preserving Digital Material" ist nicht für ausgewiesene Langzeitarchivierungsexperten konzipiert, sondern wendet sich an all jene, die sich mit der Digitalen Bibliothek beschäftigen und einen fundierten Einstieg in das Thema Langzeitarchivierung suchen."

- Abstract
- Reader awareness of article corrections can be of critical importance in the physical and biomedical sciences. Comparison of errata and corrigenda in online versions of high-impact physical sciences journals across titles and publishers yielded surprising variability. Of 43 online journals surveyed, 17 had no links between original articles and later corrections. When present, hyperlinks between articles and errata showed patterns in presentation style, but lacked consistency. Variability in the presentation, linking, and availability of online errata indicates that practices are not evenly developed across the field. Comparison of finding tools showed excellent coverage of errata by Science Citation Index, lack of indexing in INSPEC, and lack of retrieval with SciFinder Scholar. The development of standards for the linking of original articles to errata is recommended.

- Abstract
- Am 27. November 2007 veranstalteten die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (DNB) und der AKEP des Verlegerausschusses des Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels eine Informationsveranstaltung und einen sich daran anschließenden Expertenworkshop zum Thema Netzpublikationen. Zunächst stand die Vermittlung von Fakten, u. a. zu Ablieferungsverfahren, rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen und zur Pflichtablieferungsverordnung im Vordergrund. Im weiteren Verlauf des Tages wurde mit Fachleuten der Verlage, insbesondere aus dem Bereich Elektronisches Publizieren, über die Praxis innnerhalb der Verlage und die Auswirkungen der digitalen Pflichtexemplare diskutiert. Zu Veranstaltungsbeginn wurde bereits durch Matthias Ulmer (Ulmer Verlag, Verlegerausschuss im Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels) deutlich, dass sich die Verlage Klarheit hinsichtlich des Ablieferungsverfahrens der elektronischen Pflichtexemplare wünschen, um diese in ihre Pläne zu E-Books im Jahr 2008 einbeziehen zu können. Das Ziel des Workshops bestand im Wesentlichen darin, einen Konsens bezüglich der gemeinsam getragenen Absprachen zu erzielen, die später einem erweiterten Kreis zugänglich gemacht werden sollen. Dies ist ein anspruchsvolles Ziel!

- Abstract
- The Chemistry Online Retrieval Experiment (CORE), a 5 year research and development project, was one of the earliest attempts to make a substantial volume of the text and graphics from previously published scholarly periodicals available to end users in electronic form, across a computer network. Since the CORE Project dealt with materials that had already gone through traditional print publication, its emphasis was on the process and limitations of conversion and the use of the converted contents for readers. Reports results of a survey of users of the CORE system, initially at Cornell University, Chemistry Department and later throughout the campus. User data was collected using: detailed transaction logs, online questionnaires, online comments, interviews, and anecdotes. Typically, usage was found to be top heavy, with the top 35% of users accounting for 80% of usage and the top 20% of users accounting for 64,8% of total system use. - Abstract
- This volume is the first book coherently summarizing the current issues in digital libraries research, design and management. It presents, in a homogeneous way, thoroughly revised versions of 15 papers accepted for the First International Workshop on Digital Libraries, DL '94, held at Rutgers University in May 1994; in addition there are two introductory chapters provided by the volume editors, as well as a comprehensive bibliography listing 262 entries. Besides introductory aspects, the topics addressed are administration and management, information retrieval and hypertext, classification and indexing, and prototypes and applications. The volume is intended for researchers and design professionals in the field, as well as for experts from libraries administration and scientific publishing.

- Abstract
- Report of a project commissioned by British Library Research and Development Department (BLRDD) from Electronic Publishing Services Ltd designed to provide factual input about electronic publishing in the UK for a worlking party convened by the British Library as part of a follow up to the Information 2000 exercise, completed in 1991. The working party will consider the possible impacts on the library community of the development of electronic publishing. For the purpose of this study, electronic publishing was defined as including: online services (including videotex); magnetic tape services; magnetic disk products; CD-ROM and other optical disc products; ROM cards; and electronic periodicals. The main conclusions were: that the dominant position of Reuters and other financial information services means that online information retrieval still accounts for the vast majority of electronic publishing revenues; that CD-ROM is experiencing high growth, but growth from a small base and coming later than predicted; that network publishing is still in the experimental stage and almost entirely funded from the public sector; that ROM cards, which provide the medium for hand held electronic reference books are still present in the market and represent the only mass market channel; and that other electronic media (magnetic tape, magnetic disk, analogue videodisc) are not seen as having a significant part to play
