- Abstract
- Information technology (IT) encompassing an integrated library system, computer hardware and software, CDROM, Internet, and other domains, including MARC 21 formats, CORC, and metadata standards (Dublin Core, TEI, XML, RDF) has produced far-reaching changes in the job functions of catalogers. Libraries are now coming up with a new set of recruiting requirements for these positions. This paper aims to review job advertisements published in American Libraries (AL) and College and Research Libraries News (C&RL NEWS) to assess the impact of the use of IT in libraries an job requirements and qualifications for catalogers.

- Abstract
- International efforts to provide authority control include the work of IFLA, the AUTHOR Project funded by the European Commission, and related work conducted under the auspices of the ICA/CDS. IFLA developed the guidelines Form and Structure of Corporate Headings, documented the formulation of names along the lines of national origin in its publication Names of Persons, and published Guidelines for Authority and Reference Entries. Attention has shifted from a single authority record for each entity that would be shared internationally through the exchange of records to linking parallel authority records for the same entity. The access control of the future will account for difference in cataloging rules, transliteration standards, and cultural differences within the same language as well as for the need for different languages and scripts and will enable users to display the script and form of a heading that they expect. Project AUTHOR is a shared set of resource national authority files that used selections from the authority files of France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, and Belgium. The prototype tested an adaptation of Z39.50 server software for authority records and displays for user interface. An international standard for authority control records has been developed for corporate bodies, persons, and families. Through joint meetings efforts have been synchronized to develop authority control at the international level.

- Abstract
- This paper presents the IFPA software, an application for the UNESCO ISIS retrieval software, developed to manage the data and the relationships theorised in the IFLA FRBR conceptual model. The application interfaces - a DOS, a Microsoft Windows and a WEB based one - are presented through their functionalities. A detailed database structure is explained as well as the way the relationships between the entities are managed in the ISIS underlying environment, not originally designed for this task. The author stresses finally how this tool will be available free of charge to everyone who wants to experiment this new cataloging approach.

- This bibliography contains selected cataloging tools an the Internet. It is divided into seven sections as follows: authority management and subject headings tools; cataloging tools by type of materials; dictionaries, encyclopedias, and place names; listservs and workshops; software and vendors; technical service professional organizations; and journals and newsletters. Resources are arranged in alphabetical order under each topic. Selected cataloging tools are annotated. There is some overlap since a given web site can cover many tools.

- Abstract
- With the introduction of the microcomputer in the 1980s, a revolution of sorts was initiated. In libraries this was evidenced by the acquisition of personal computers and the software to run on them. All that catalogers needed were cataloging rules and a MARC format to ensure their bibliographic control. However, little did catalogers realize they were dealing with an industry that introduced rapid technological changes, which effected continual revision of existing rules and the formulation of special guidelines to deal with the industry's innovative products. This article focuses on the attempts of libraries and organized cataloging groups to develop the Chapter 9 descriptive cataloging rules in AACR2; it highlights selected events and includes cataloging examples that illustrate the evolution of the chapter.

- Abstract
- This article addresses some unresolved cataloging issue related to pinyin Romanization, vernacular application, field coding, and other aspects of Chinese cataloging in OCLC. These issues lead to inconsistencies in the way Chinese materials are cataloged, though cataloging standards and Romanization rules are made and the processes of the projects like Pinyin Conversion, Manual Review, and Pinyin Clean-Up have been completed. In this article, eight of the most commonly encountered issues and inconsistent practices in Chinese cataloging are discussed. Examples from Chinese records created with OCLC CJK software in WorldCat are used to demonstrate the problems they raise. With the discussion it is hoped that these inconsistent practices can be recognized and avoided in the future.
