    Abstract
    This article explores the question "What is an International Standard for Bibliographic Description (ISBD) resource in the context of the Semantic Web, and what is the relationship of its description to the linked data?" This question is discussed against the background of the dichotomy between the description and access using the Semantic Web differentiation of the three logical layers: real-world objects, web of data, and special purpose (bibliographic) data. The representation of bibliographic data as linked data is discussed, distinguishing the description of a resource from the iconic/objective and the informational/subjective viewpoints. In the conclusion, the authors give views on possible directions of future development of the ISBD.

    Abstract
    Catalogers in larger libraries have web access on their desktops, which puts many resources just a click away. Cataloging tools and documentation are available through web browser interfaces. Many library online catalogs are accessible for searching class numbers and other cataloging information. Web sites of publishers, governmental agencies, and individual authors abound, providing a wealth of information. Having this information readily available has had an impact on cataloging. The ability to have more than one open window on the desktop enables catalogers to copy and paste cataloging information from multiple sources. Web resources provide critical information about the context for the item in hand, resulting in better cataloging records and more accurate access points. This article discusses and gives examples of ways that information found on the web can be used to facilitate cataloging processes.

    Abstract
    Presents a new Web cataloguing strategy based upon the automatic analysis of documents stored in a proxy server cache. This could be an elegant method of Web cataloguing as it creates no extra network load and runs completely automatically. Naturally such a mechanism will only reach a subset of Web documents, but at an institute such as the Alfred Wegner Institute, due to the fact that scientists tend to make quite good search engines, the cache usually contains large numbers of documents related to polar and marine research. Details of a database for polar, marine and global change research, based upon a cache scanning mechanism are given, and it is shown that it is becoming an increasingly uaseful resource

    The Dublin Core is a 15 element set intended to facilitate discovery of electronic resources. Its characteristics are: simplicity, semantic interoperability, international consensus, flexibility, metadata modularity on the Web and a metadata architecture for the Web.     Abstract
    WWW sites, consisting mainly of links to other Internet resources, have begun to proliferate and these sites are valuable to library users and researchers because they bring together in a single Web site links to a comprehensive array of information resources. Because libraries may elect to include bibliographic records for these sites in their online catalogues, cataloguers should be aware of some of the main aspects of cataloguing this new type of resource.     Abstract
    The Internet has changed the way users access information for their research needs. According to recent surveys, we have a generation of Google users who search for information for their research needs in Web search engines before they search the OPAC. Catalogers are faced with the issue of how to help users improve access to the bibliographic world in the Internet environment. This article presents three case studies as examples of corporate name authority records that could be greatly improved by using or adding current information from the Internet. Strategies for searching official corporate body Web pages, adding references, and updating local catalogs are discussed.

    Abstract
    This article presents an overview of some of the important recent developments in cataloging theory and practice and online catalog design. Changes in cataloging theory and practice include the incorporation of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records principles into catalogs, the new Resource Description and Access cataloging manual, and the new CONSER Standard Record. Web 2.0 functionalities and advances in search technology and results displays are influencing online catalog design. The paper ends with hypothetical scenarios in which a catalog, enhanced by the developments described, fulfills the tasks of finding serials articles and titles.

    Abstract
    A bibliographic record is a conceptual whole that includes all bibliographic information about a resource together in one place. With the Semantic Web, individual data statements are linked across the web. This position article argues that the traditional conceptualization of bibliographic records affects the affordances and limitations of that data. A historical analysis of the development of bibliographic records contrasted with the Semantic Web model reveals how the "record" model shaped library cataloging and the implications on library catalogs today. Reification of the record model for bibliographic data hampers possibilities for innovation in cataloging, inspiring a reconceptualization of bibliographic description.

    Abstract
    Each of the FR family of models has been represented in Resource Description Framework (RDF), the basis of the Semantic Web. This has involved analysis of the entity-relationship diagrams and text of the models to identify and create the RDF classes, properties, definitions and scope notes required. The work has shown that it is possible to seamlessly connect the models within a semantic framework, specifically in the treatment of names, identifiers, and subjects, and link the RDF elements to those in related namespaces.

    Abstract
    Explores the opportunities for libraries to contribute to the proposed global "Semantic Web." Library name and subject authority files, including work that IFLA has done related to a new view of "Universal Bibliographic Control" in the Internet environment and the work underway in the U.S. and Europe, are making a reality of the virtual international authority file on the Web. The bibliographic and authority records created according to AACR2 reflect standards for metadata that libraries have provided for years. New opportunities for using these records in the digital world are described (interoperability), including mapping with Dublin Core metadata. AACR2 recently updated Chapter 9 on Electronic Resources. That process and highlights of the changes are described, including Library of Congress' rule interpretations.
