    Abstract
    This book provides a coherent account of the theory of classification. It discusses the contributions made by theoreticians like E.C. Richardson, J.B. Brown, W. Hulme, W.C. Berwick Sayers, H.E. Bliss and S.R. Ranganathan. However, the theory put forward by S.R. Ranganathan predominates the whole book because his contribution is far more than anybody else's. Five major schemes - DDC, UDC, LCC, CC, and BC - have also been discussed. Library classification is a specialized area of study. In recent years, library classification has become a vast and complicated field of study using highly technical terminology. A special attempt has been made to provide descriptions as simple and direct as could be possible. To illustrate the theory of classification, large number of examples have been given from all major schemes so that an average student ould also grasp the concepts easily. This book has been especially written to meet the requirements of students, preparing for their library science, documentation, information science diplomas and degrees.

    Originally published in 1979 as a title in the Outlines of Modern Librarianship' series this new edition has been expanded and updated in the light of recent developments in this rapidly developing field of librarianship, with particular reference to automation. As a consequence, this edition is substantially more than an outline of the subject. The authors take the reader through a comprehensive exposition of cataloguing - the definitions, arrangement and role of the catalogue: the history of its development; standardization and AACR2; the subject approach via pre-and post-coordinate indexing; analysis; filing rules and methods; the physical forms of the catalogue; the use of the computer in cataloguing; the role of networks; the management of cataloguing; and the relevance of book indexing.     Abstract
    Organizing is such a common activity that we often do it without thinking much about it. In our daily lives we organize physical things--books on shelves, cutlery in kitchen drawers--and digital things--Web pages, MP3 files, scientific datasets. Millions of people create and browse Web sites, blog, tag, tweet, and upload and download content of all media types without thinking "I'm organizing now" or "I'm retrieving now." This book offers a framework for the theory and practice of organizing that integrates information organization (IO) and information retrieval (IR), bridging the disciplinary chasms between Library and Information Science and Computer Science, each of which views and teaches IO and IR as separate topics and in substantially different ways. It introduces the unifying concept of an Organizing System--an intentionally arranged collection of resources and the interactions they support--and then explains the key concepts and challenges in the design and deployment of Organizing Systems in many domains, including libraries, museums, business information systems, personal information management, and social computing. Intended for classroom use or as a professional reference, the book covers the activities common to all organizing systems: identifying resources to be organized; organizing resources by describing and classifying them; designing resource-based interactions; and maintaining resources and organization over time. The book is extensively annotated with disciplinary-specific notes to ground it with relevant concepts and references of library science, computing, cognitive science, law, and business.

    Abstract
    After 25 years of service, this professional text has been updated in line with developments in the field of library science. Since the seventh edition of this standard text was published in 1985, there have been changes in virtually every area of bibliographic control. "AACR2 Revised" (AACR2R) has been implemented; new editions of or supplements to LCSH, LC classification, and DDC, and "Sears" have appeared; OCLC has adopted the PRISM format; and networking and online catalogues have become a way of life. Taylor addresses these and other changes in this edition. Consequently, many chapters of this text are entirely new, such as "Cataloguing in Context" and "Subject Arrangement of Library Materials", or fully revised such as "Development of Cataloguing Codes", which has been expanded to show the continuity in the development leading to publication of AACR2R. Two appendices have been added: an introduction to USMARC format and instructions for typing catalogue cards, including a detailed analysis of the punctuation and spacing to be used when conforming to the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD).

Notwendig geworden war die Überarbeitung vor allem durch die Dynamik im Bereich der Informationstechnologien und deren Auswirkungen sowohl auf die Praxis der Informationsspezialisten wie auch die Disziplin selber. Augenfälligste Veränderung ist denn auch ein neues Kapitel zu »Internet und Informationswissenschaft«. »Chemical librarians« Zunächst einige Worte zu den Autoren, die dem einen oder anderen vielleicht nicht bekannt sind: Brian C. Vickery und Alina Vickery sind beide von ihrer Ausbildung her Chemiker und waren als Ehepartner (Alina Vickery starb Ende 2001) auch beruflich vielfältig gemeinsam tätig. Wie viele Chemiker (man denke nur Eugene Garfield, den Begründer der modernen Szientometrie) sensibilisiert für den Umgang mit enormen Informationsmengen und damit Informationsproblemen, zudem als »chemical librarian« (Brian C. Vickery) und Mitarbeiter von chemischen Fachzeitschriften auch professionell beschäftigt mit Fragen des Fachinformationstransfers, haben sie sich (insbesondere Brian C. Vickery) frühzeitig und kontinuierlich informationswissenschaftlich betätigt. Resultat ist eine Fülle von Publikationen, vor allem zu den Bereichen Indexieren, Klassifizieren, Information Retrieval, auch zur Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation (alle Arbeiten sind im Anhang aufgelistet). Brian C. Vickery war außerdem, das dürfte für Bibliothekare von Interesse sein, als Deputy beim Aufbau der National Lending Library for Science and Technology (NLLST) in Boston Spa beteiligt, die ihre Arbeit 1961 aufnahm und 1973 mit in die neu gegründete British Library einging.
