    Abstract
Techniques to aid the manipulation of a computer based document were tested by a group of 38 novice users. The subjects were given a period of time to browse the document, and were subsequently given a set of goal related tasks in a questionnaire/answer session. The techniques tested were sequential paging, index referral, text fins and embedded hypertext links. 3 differing types of link mechansms were assessed and compared with each other. Sequential paging and index referral were the most commonly used of the techniques. Text find was employed more for goal related tasks than for browsing. The hypertext link technique was generally unpopular, especially for goal related tasks. In order to establish the importance of the text find technique, the effect on reading strategies without this facility was also investigated. For browsing operations, an increase in paging and decrease in hypertext linking was observed. In the case of goal directed searching, an increase was observed in paging and index referral techniques. The study calls into question the usefulness of hypertext in educational software

    Abstract
Describes an approach to semi-automatically generate a hypertext from linear texts, based on initially creatign nodes and composite nodes composed of 'mini-hypertexts'. Node-node similarity values are computed using standard information retrieval techniques and these similarity measures are then used to selectively create node-node links based on the strength of similarity between them. The process is a novel one because the link creation process also uses values from a dynamically computed metric which measures the topological compactness of the overall hypertext being generated. Describes experiments on generating a hypertext from a collection of 846 software product descriptions comprising 8,5 MBytes of text which yield some guidelines on how the process should be automated. This text to hypertext conversion method is put into the context of an overall hypertext authoring tool currently under development

    Abstract
This research is focused on the continuation of the Hypertext Map prototype implementation - MHTX, proposed by Lima, (2004), with the general objective of transforming the MHTX into a semantic content management product facilitating navigation in context supported by customizable software that is easy to use, through high end desktop/web interfaces that sustain the operation of its functions. Besides, these studies aim, in the long run, to achieve the simplification of the information organization, access and recovery processes in digital libraries, making archive management by authors, content managers and information professionals possible.
