    Abstract
The Digital Public Library of America brings together the riches of America's libraries, archives, and museums, and makes them freely available to the world. In order to do this, DPLA has had to build elements of the national digital platform to connect to those institutions and to serve their digitized materials to audiences. In this article, we detail the construction of two critical elements of our work: the decentralized national network of "hubs," which operate in states across the country; and a version of the Hydra repository software that is tailored to the needs of our community. This technology and the organizations that make use of it serve as the foundation of the future of DPLA and other projects that seek to take advantage of the national digital platform.

    Abstract
The current subject gateways have evolved over time when the discipline of Internet resource discovery was in its infancy. This is reflected by the lack of well-established, light-weight, deployable, easy-to-use, standards for metadata and information retrieval. We provide an introduction to the architecture, standards and software solutions in use by subject gateways, and to the issues that must be addressed to support future subject gateways

    Abstract
The following describes a number of technologies and exemplary service designs that foster better Internet finding tools in libraries and more cooperative and efficient effort in Internet resource collection building. Our library and partner institutions have been involved in this work for over a decade. The open source software and projects discussed represent appropriate technologies and sustainable strategies that will help Internet portals, digital libraries, virtual libraries and library catalogs-with-portal-like-capabilities (IPDVLCs) to scale better and to anticipate and meet the needs of scholarly and educational users.

    Abstract

    Abstract
The Australian Academic Research Library Information Network (AARLIN) aims to provide seamless access to Australian and international information resources for researchers via their personal computers through a personally customisable portal. The project has funding from the Australian Govemment. AARLIN commenced in the year 2000 with a pilot project and will develop into a fully operational service in Australian universities over the next three years. During the pilot project Ex Libris' Metalib and SFX software have been used to trial the AARLIN portal concept with a group of researchers. The results of a survey of the researchers are presented. It is concluded that the portal has the potential to enhance the work of researchers by improving their success in information searching.

    Abstract
Do a search on AltaVista for "algebra". What do you get? Nearly 700,000 hits, of which AltaVista will allow you to view only what it determines is the top 200. Major search engines such as AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, Lycos, and the like continue to provide a valuable service, but with the recent growth of the Internet, topic-specific sites that provide some organization to the topic are increasingly important. It the goal of the Mathematics Archives to make it easier for the ordinary user to find useful mathematical information on the Web. The Mathematics Archives (http://archives.math.utk.edu) is a multipurpose site for mathematics on the Internet. The focus is on materials which can be used in mathematics education (primarily at the undergraduate level). Resources available range from shareware and public domain software to electronic proceedings of various conferences, to an extensive collection of annotated links to other mathematical sites. All materials on the Archives are categorized and cross referenced for the convenience of the user. Several search mechanisms are provided. The Harvest search engine is implemented to provide a full text search of most of the pages on the Archives. The software we house and our list of annotated links to mathematical sites are both categorized by subject matter. Each of these collections has a specialized search engine to assist the user in locating desired material. Services at the Mathematics Archives are divided up into five broad topics: * Links organized by Mathematical Topics * Software * Teaching Materials * Other Math Archives Features * Other Links

    Abstract
    Content
Darin u.a.

    Abstract
Many subject specific portals were built during the last year. Most of these are simple user-interfaces to databases of subject specific information added with several lists of links. This centralised type of portal often looks fine with its consistent facing but is hard to keep up to date and high priced to maintain. Users expect a service be malntained and available 24 hours, 365 days for at least 10 years and this all free of charge. On the one hand, it seams to be impossible to set up a service matching all this demands, an the other hand, many institutions offer information and services which could be parts of a portal, which are maintained frequently and paid by public via these institutions. The idea is, to collect the existing information and present it in a structured and consistent way. This idea matches in an excellent way with the way knowledge is produced in Physics. Physicists work all over the world often an different continents an the same topic, knowing each others work only from their publications, conferences and online-communication. Information in Physics is published in quite different ways, by journal articles, which can be reviewed, sometimes by peer, or pre-prints. Many information is available in non-textual genres like software sources or datasets or mathematical formula. Distributed Portals make use of the existing information an the web. In the early days of the web, the very popular link-lists where a kind of portal, linking to (all) pages with information an the specific topic. Indeed, these link lists had many properties of modern portals, offering information in a structured and selected way. But they did not offer the information under a common layout (desktop) and did not offer user-specific views onto the information. Modern distributed portals combine the advantages of centralised portals (high information structure, common layout, easy navigation through all the information) with the possibilities of distributed portals (up to date information, low budget implementation, good knowledge coverage).

    Abstract
In this paper, we discuss a user study done at the formative stage of development of a Math Tools developers' community. The Math Tools digital library, which aims to collect software tools to support K-12 and university mathematics instruction, has two synergistic purposes. One is to support federated search and the other is to create a community of practice in which developers and users can work together. While much research has explored the technical problem of federated search, there has been little investigation into how to grow a creative, working community around a digital library. To this end, we surveyed and interviewed members of the Math Tools community in order to elicit concerns and priorities. These data led to rich descriptions of the teachers, developers, and researchers who comprise this community. Insights from these descriptions were then used to inform the creation of a set of metaphors and design principles that the Math Tools team could use in their continuing design work.
