    Abstract
Information systems are essential support for knowledge management in all types of enterprises. This paper describes the evolution and development of a specialized hospital information system. The system is designed to integrate for access and retrieval from databases of patients' case records, and related images - CATSCAN, MRI, X-Ray - and to enable online access to full text of relevant papers on the Internet/WWW. The generation of information products and services from the system is briefly described.

    Abstract
Presents the results of a survey of 36 banking and finance institutions in the UK on their information professionals' use of the Internet as a source of business information. The survey revealed that less than a third are currently using the Internet. Discusses the disadvantages and advantages of the Internet both as an information source and in terms of management. At the moment the Internet is a complementary information source although in the future it may become an entry-point to other information sources

    Abstract
A short personal view on the development of the Internet phenomenon is given. It is argued that the Internet is a powerful paradigm of change and community building. Changes which enable the learning organization are of particular interest. This is investigated in the context of corporate training using, or learning from, the Internet. Next, capabilities and rigidities of the net as a knowledge management tool rather than yet another way to distribute unwanted information, are listed. Finally, the important lessons learnt from the success of the Internet are linked to the future of marketing the Internet world wide

    Abstract
There is a world of business resources, both human and data, available on the computer mediated commincations (CMC) systems such as Internet and CompuServe. Though most of the CMCs discourage or prohibit commercial transactions (buying or selling) on their systems, there is still much to offer the average business in terms of practical business research and development. But few buisenesses are taking advantage of theses resources. This paper will discuss the kinds of business resources available through CMCs, particularly the Internet. Although the paper will touch on using the CMCs to find database information, the focus will be on the coneferencing aspects of the networks and how they can aid business research and development projects

    Abstract
Reports results of the 7th annual survey of the use of business information in UK libraries, based on a questionnaire survey mailed in Jan 1998 to 817 libraries. The Internet is now a centrally important resource for nearly all UK business libraries and 90% of 1998 survey respondents are currently using it. While some end user services (Internet and CD-ROM) are being taken up, there is little evidence of penetration of end user online services in the organizations employing business librarians. After earlier fearing its consequences, business librarians now view end user access to the Internet with equanimity. Business reference departments in public libraries are facing a serious threat from the Internet. Business information budgets vary widely, from under 5.000 pounds to over 1 million pounds and the most common is the 5.000 to 24.999 pound range. Business libraries have espoused the information age and 50% spend at least half of their resources budgets on electronic data

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore information literacy amongst small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the UK and the USA and argue that information policy in the UK has not given sufficient attention to helping these companies navigate the ever-increasing volumes of information accessible over the internet. Design/methodology/approach - A combination of primary and secondary data have been used. The primary data consists of a survey of UK SMEs, which explored how these companies use the internet as a research tool. The results of the survey are compared to similar surveys carried out in the USA. Several significant UK policy documents are examined to find out how government policy in this area has addressed the issue of information literacy amongst SMEs. Findings - It is shown that UK SMEs wasted over £3.7 billion in 2005 in terms of time wasted through inefficient use of the internet as a research tool. Practical implications - It is argued that while government policies in this area have put resources into encouraging SMEs to adopt broadband and engage in e-commerce, they have not sufficiently addressed the issue of information literacy. Originality/value - Little research has been carried out into how SMEs use the internet as a research tool and this is the first time that a financial cost figure has been applied to inefficient searching by these organisations.

    Abstract
Small and medium enterprises are an important part of the UK economy but little is known about their information needs and use. Presents the rationale and findings of a pilot survey carried out by the Aslib Consultnacy for limited liability companies in the London Home Counties in an attempt to establish their information needs and use. Suggests, while stressing that the results obtained are not definitive, that a successful company might be one that doesn't bother with credit reports, has a professionally qualified librarian that uses information brokers, and has access to the Internet

    Abstract
Defines business information as any information needed by a company to carry out its business, and considers the demand for a wider range of such information resulting from the increasingly global nature of business activity, organisational interaction, and related economic, social and political changes. Provision by publishers of business information in paper and various electronic formats is growing together with increasing use of the Internet and Web sites by companies. This in turn emphasizes the need to open up information sources, and continue to demonstrate to top management the value of information strategies and personal networking

    Abstract
Information technology developments during the last 2 decades, including the development of the Internet and particulary the WWW, have crested problems and opportunities for records managers. The knowledge contained in records must be captured into the organization's memory it it is to be managed and shared for company prosperity. Explores some of these problems and opportunities, and proposes a 3 phase strategy for managing records and knowledge in the current, and likely future, technological environment
