Summarizes results of a survey of 1.495 libraries carried out by the National Commission on Libraries and Information SCience (NCLIS) which sought to provide benchmark data for public library use of the Internet. Covers: connections to the Internet, type of connection and network provider, average cost of connection and future resource allocation, uses of the Internet, Internet-based user services, public access terminals, provision of hard-copy materials, community information services, computers and phone lines, factors affecting involvement with the Internet, primrary motivation for interest in the Internet, roles perceived as appropriate for public libraries and federal government. Abstract

As a constantly changing resource, the Internet poses a challenge for bibliographic instruction librarians. Until recently, there has been little effort to survey Internet users about their search behaviours or source of Internet instruction. Focuses on survey data collected at Albany University, SUNY, early in 1995. It provides information about how users learned to use the Internet (mostly by themselves), the penetration of the Internet instruction programme (only 13% of those surveyed had attended), and public awareness of both instruction and the availability of Internet terminals in the university library

The University of the West of England (UWE) Library Science comprises 4 campus libraries spread across Bristol. It has gradually developed network services and access to JANET and the Internet for the libraries at all campuses but has only recently had access to Netscape. Reports 2 case studies conducted by UWE librarians on using the Internet for Fine Art Print resources and using JANET/Internet resources to support mathematics highlighting some common thoughts and issues surrounding the Internet

Reports results of a survey, conducted at Nassau Community College; New York State, of academic reference librarians' use of the Internet at the reference desk at 2 year and 4 year colleges and universities throughout New York State. Concludes that: library managers must understand the value of the Internet and provide access at the reference desk; they must allow adequate time, staff and advanced training; support from academic computing centres and specialists is essential; reference librarians mus develop the necessary attitudes and skills; library involvement in the organization and management of the Internet is essential; and graduate library schools must offer courses on the Internet

Abstract

The present analysis looks at how scientists use the Internet for informal scientific communication. It investigates the relationship between several explanatory variables and Internet use in a cross-section of scientists from seven European countries and five academic disciplines (astronomy, chemistry, computer science, economics, and psychology). The analysis confirmed some of the results of previous U.S.-based analyses. In particular, it corroborated a positive relationship between research productivity and Internet use. The relationship was found to be nonlinear, with very productive (nonproductive) scientists using the Internet less (more) than would be expected according to their productivity. Also, being involved in collaborative R&D and having large networks of collaborators is associated with increased Internet use. In contrast to older studies, the analysis did not find any equalizing effect whereby higher Internet use rates help to overcome the problems of potentially disadvantaged researchers. Obviously, everybody who wants to stay at the forefront of research and keep upto-date with developments in their research fields has to use the Internet.
