    Abstract
Provides illustrative examples of the methods, tools and resources that enable librarians, information specialists and end users to make the most of the WWW. The 4 key factors that facilitate access are location, evaluation, organization and communication. Outlines how a number of sistes make use of these factors. Describes: the Internet Library for Librarians, Argus Clearinghouse's Digital Librarian's Award; FEDSTATS, the University Library System, chines University of Hong Kong, the WWW Virtual Library, the Finnish Virtual Library Project, and BIBNET

    Abstract
Summarizes results of a survey of 1.495 libraries carried out by the National Commission on Libraries and Information SCience (NCLIS) which sought to provide benchmark data for public library use of the Internet. Covers: connections to the Internet, type of connection and network provider, average cost of connection and future resource allocation, uses of the Internet, Internet-based user services, public access terminals, provision of hard-copy materials, community information services, computers and phone lines, factors affecting involvement with the Internet, primrary motivation for interest in the Internet, roles perceived as appropriate for public libraries and federal government. The study includes recommendations for policy makers, public libraries and the NCLIS

    Abstract
Argues that librarians must take an active role in providing subject access to information on the Internet. Discusses aspects of bibliography that are relevant to online information resources, and proposes 'webliography' as an important responsibility for librarians. In taking up this task, librarians will not only be creating useful products for the user, but they will also be developing knowledge of the particular online literatures that are available, knowledge that will prove useful in providing reference and instructional services to their constituencies

    Abstract
We report a naturalistic interactive information retrieval (IIR) study of 18 ordinary users in the age of 20-25 who carry out everyday-life information seeking (ELIS) on the Internet with respect to the three types of information needs identified by Ingwersen (1986): the verificative information need (VIN), the conscious topical information need (CIN), and the muddled topical information need (MIN). The searches took place in the private homes of the users in order to ensure as realistic searching as possible. Ingwersen (1996) associates a given search behaviour to each of the three types of information needs, which are analytically deduced, but not yet empirically tested. Thus the objective of the study is to investigate whether empirical data does, or does not, conform to the predictions derived from the three types of information needs. The main conclusion is that the analytically deduced information search behaviour characteristics by Ingwersen are positively corroborated for this group of test participants who search the Internet as part of ELIS.

    Abstract
Purpose - This paper takes forward strands from "Evaluating the quality of library portals" by the author and places them in the context of different approaches to teaching students about information use. Design/methodology/approach - An opinion piece which examines the impact on user behaviour of traditional mechanical library skills training (such as "library orientation", "bibliographic instruction", or "information skills training" rather than true information literacy-based teaching). The paper points out the similarity in the effects of such teaching to the effects of offering users a more powerful mechanical information retrieval tool (such as a library portal or internet search engine) without effective support on how the information retrieved should be used for significant educational outcomes. Findings - For librarians to be custodians of the highest standards of intelligent information use, they must demonstrate a meaningful, rather than a mechanical understanding and application of information literacy in their everyday practice. Without this, information users will rightly turn to new, non-mediated forms of information use such as internet search engines, which can deal with purely technical challenges of information retrieval superficially well. Both the users and the profession itself will be the poorer as a result. Research limitations/implications - An expression of opinion about the dangers of pedagogically underdeveloped user education on user behaviour. Practical implications - This opinion piece gives some clear and practical insights for the application of information literacy principles to library practice. Originality/value - This piece points out the ironic similarities in the effect of a mechanistic or tool-based approach to user education and unmediated user access to internet search engines or Library portals: above all, a "more is better" approach in the information user, marked by citing too much poorly digested, poorly evaluated data.

    Abstract
Reports on a survey of ARL (Ass. of Research Libraries) members in the USA in 1994, which sought to find out the electronic reference services that are offered by these libraries and how the services affect reference staff, the expectations of users, and user instruction. The services covered include CD-ROM, intermediary online searching, end user online (e.g. FirstSearch), tape loaded databases and user access to the Internet, including electronic mail facilities. Highlights the additional workload the provision of these services involves, and the sometimes unrealistic expectations of users especially with regard to Internet resources

    Abstract
Argues that users in academic libraries have preconceived attitudes regarding the use of particular formats of indexes and other materials, and that these attitudes frequently interfere with the successful retrieval of the resources they need, by leading them to their preferred format rather than allowing them to choose the best means to access what they need. Discusses the significance of such preconceived views on the provision of reference services
