    Abstract
Contribution to an issue on technological university libraries in East europe. Discusses an approach adopted by technological university libraries in East Germany towards new students. Discusses the following aspects of this approach: the library atmosphere and guidance systems, quality of service offered; motivation of new students; organisation of leisure time; and seeking a closer relationship with the student in a specific subject area. Lists 3 tendencies in the work of East German technological university libraries.

    Abstract
Reports a survey conducted by questionnaire which was sent to a group of art libraries representing museum, academic, special and public libraries, the aim of which was to gather on the institutional organisation of reference service in an effort to analyse levels of service provided. Results indicate that large urban public libraries have taken the lead in providing art reference service basics to their users, but museums, on the other hand, seem lacking in a number of areas.

    Abstract
The delivery of library reference service can be practically supplemented through the appropriate incorporation and use of software tools commonly reffered to an expert system. The level of support such systems can affort the reference service organisation is dependent on the degree of complexity characteristic of the rule-based programming techniques used to develop a particular system and the size of its knowledge data base. Since most expert systems are designed to simulate the process of problem-solving practiced by an expert in a given field, an expert system designed to fully emulate library reference work must have the potential to respond to a wide subject range of questions with varying degrees of response adequacy. Describes a microcomputer-based reference expert-type system.

    Abstract
Outlines the activities involved in developing a community on line information system and the not for profit organisation which was established to run it. The catalyst for the system was Rockford Public Library, Illinois and includes the mission statement, guiding principles, policy statements, standing committees and their goals and objectives during the first year of operation. Funding, staffing, users, and information providers are also discussed. The Sinnissippi Valley Information Network now provides the local community with access to the Internet, a wide range of state information such as property tax records, council minuates and library holdings, as well as WEB pages. The only area of disappointment has been the lack of interest by schools. Sets out 11 suggestions for those considering starting a similar venture

Rez. in: Mitt VÖB 61(2008) H.1, S.82-87 (M. Hütte): "Kochen liegt im Trend. Immer noch? Immer wieder.

    Abstract
Touch-screen kiosks are situated in a variety of locations to provide the public with ready access to health information. This paper examines their use, via the transactional logs, and makes comparisons between the types of organisation in which the kiosks are housed. Twenty-one kiosks were selected and categorised into four groups - pharmacy, hospital, information centre and surgery. A small case study features a supermarket kiosk. Details of nearly 90,000 user sessions and 750,000 page views were used for the comparison. Comparisons between sites were made in terms of number of users, their age and gender, trends over time, the number of sessions conducted, page view time, session duration, pages viewed, site penetration, number of pages printed and health topics viewed. There were considerable differences between the kiosk locations. This early research provides the quantitative foundation for a fuller study of kiosk location and the differences in perceptions of the quality/authority of kiosk data.

    Abstract
Purpose - To discuss the nature of public library websites and what they communicate about the values of the sector. Design/methodology/approach - The article examines a range of Scottish public library websites to determine domain and quality of information resources provided. Findings - That many public libraries in Scotland have a virtual identity problem brought about by being part of larger websites for their parent bodies. It is argued that this identity problem is to the detriment of the service, and that models of good practice should be urgently considered by public librarians. Practical implications - The article should be of interest to librarians considering how best to present their websites and the potential challenges in doing so as part of a larger umbrella organisation. Originality/value - This is the first article to examine all sites from Scottish public libraries in terms of their origins and content.

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this article is to explore and propose a way of using power as a theoretical anchor to investigate the information behaviour of people in work roles. Design/methodology/approach - The paper reviews literature on power relevant to the information disciplines. Various models of power are described, and a more sophisticated view, which takes a relational approach to power, is used to suggest how information related behaviour could be investigated. Findings - In this paper, power is regarded as a pervasive phenomenon involved in all aspects of individual lives, including the aspects emanating from work roles performed by individuals, thus manifesting itself as part of the relationships in the organisation. The paper suggests a framework that links information behaviour to power by arguing that power relations that form part of the processes of the work roles induce the information behaviour exhibited by those people. The paper concludes by pointing to a need for information behaviour researchers to consider power as central to understanding how people seek and use information. Originality/value - The framework could be used as a tool for designing studies that will enable the collection of data on information behaviour.

Information professionals are increasingly responsible not only for running traditional information and library services but also for providing an online presence for their organisation. This book shows how best practice in delivering online information services should be based an actual user needs and behaviour. A series of case studies provide real life examples of how social science information is being used in the community. The book then draws an these case studies to outline the main issues facing service providers: such as usability, meta-data and management. The book concludes with a look to the future and how both technological and organisational changes will shape online information services.
