- Abstract
- The article focuses on the EBSCO databases that provide services to libraries. The Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA) include resources focusing on librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, and information science. LISTA has more than 21,000 articles from more than 600 periodicals and includes more than 5,000 conference papers and reports. In the database, there are also cited references and the number of times the source was used can also be found within the database. These are helpful tips in bibliography researching. The database has also several search options including "Basic Search," "Advanced Search," and Indexes." The EBSCOhost interface is simple to use and easy to grasp while LISTA is a free abstract database.

- Abstract
- National institutions in the international community have realized the importance and significance of digital documents living an the World Wide Web as a part of the current cultural history. Collecting, preserving and giving access to this vast collection of information is a challenge of great importance. This article points at some general focus area, and goes more in depth an access to Web archives. The Nordic Web Archive project is described to some extent.The project has pointed at some alternative ways of enabling users to take benefit of Web archives, and it also brings experiences an the access area forward.

- Abstract
- Wissenschaftliche Informationen im Internet gewinnen zunehmend an Bedeutung. Um sie als zuverlässige Ressourcen für die wissenschaftliche Arbeit zu erschließen, müssen sie auf ihre Qualität geprüft werden - eine Aufgabe, die vermehrt von wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken über ihre Internetdienste wie Subject Gateways, Digitale oder Virtuelle Bibliotheken wahrgenommen wird. Der vorliegende Artikel bietet eine medientheoretische Diskussion zum wissenschaftlichen Informationsraum im Internet und den medienbedingten Auswirkungen auf die Inhalte sowie einen Überblick zur Entwicklung von Evaluationsansätzen für Internetressourcen. Die theoretischen Abhandlungen werden durch einen umfangreichen Serviceteil ergänzt, der detailliert Qualitätskriterien und den Evaluierungsprozess in einer Weise aufzeigt, welche die Anpassung an (fach-)spezifische Anforderungen ermöglicht.

- Abstract
- LexisNexis ist einer der weltgrößten Anbieter von Wirtschafts- und Rechtsinformationen. Die Geschichte des heute zu Reed Elsevier gehörenden Unternehmens reicht bis in die 60er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts. Von Anfang an verfolgte LexisNexis Volltextretrieval. Die internationale Abteilung von LexisNexis führt auf wichtigen nationalen Märkten jeweils regionale Produkte ein. In Deutschland sind dies "LexisNexis Recht" und "LexisNexis Wirtschaft". Der Artikel beschreibt auf der Basis von Nutzertests die genannten Produkte und analysiert den deutschen Markt und sein Umfeld. Abschließend werden Stärken und Schwächen, Chancen und Risiken von LexisNexis auf dem deutschen Informationsmarkt diskutiert.

- Abstract
- Das Informationsangebot in der Chemie ist, im Unterschied etwa zur Biologie, fast völlig von kommerziellen Anbietern dominiert, deren elektronische Produkte vor allem einen zahlungskräftigen Industriemarkt bedienen. Das ist eine für Hochschulen problematische Situation, trotz zahl reicher "academic programs" für solche Datenbanken. Die Produzenten haben in den letzten Jah ren u.a. durch Erweiterung der inhaltlichen Erfassung, Erwerb weiterer Datenbanken und Optimierung ihrer Benutzeroberflächen für Endnutzer versucht, ihre Marktanteile zu vergrössern. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt sich die Frage, ob nicht eine oder zwei dieser kostspieligen, umfangreichen Quellen für Endnutzer die wesentlichen Bedürfnisse im Bereich Sekundär/Tertiärliteratur abdecken kann. Aufgrund unserer langjährigen Rechercheerfahrung und von Datenbankvergleichen müssen wir diese Frage leider verneinen.

- Abstract
- Elektronische Medien sind definitionsgemäß Kommunikationsmittel, die auf elektronischem Wege, digital kodiert, übermittelt werden. Bezogen auf die Chemieinformation handelt es sich dabei um chemische Publikationen, Handbücher, Datenreihen, Spektren, Reaktionen, Repositorien für Online-Learning und vieles mehr. Im Rahmen der Vorstellung der neuen Informations- und Wissensplattform "chem.de" während der ACHEMA 2006 hat der Autor den Versuch unternommen, die revolutionäre Entwicklung der Chemieinformation zwischen "gestern und morgen" zu beschreiben. Der Vortragstext ist hier im wesentlichen unbebildert wiedergegeben, die Vortragsfolien sind auf eben dieser "chem. de "-Plattform abzurufen (Forschungsführer/Fels, Gregor/Publikationen).

- "Die Bitmanagement Software GmbH und der Medienkonzern Bertelsmann treten mit ihrem gemeinsamen Angebot, dem 3D Globus, gegen Google Earth an, wobei sie mit wesentlich niedrigeren Investitionen und besseren Diensten punkten wollen. Aus 160 Gigabyte Satelliten- und Kartendaten mit unterschiedliche Auflösungen entstand ein voll integriertes DVD-Konsumprodukt mit 3D Graphical User Interface (GUI). Die 3D-Technologie basiert auf den 3D-ISO-Standard VRML/ X3D, dem weltweit meist verbreiteten Standard. Für sein Globusprojekt hatte die Bertelsmann-Tochter "WissenMedia-Verlag GmbH", München, den 3D-Software-Hersteller "Bitmanagement Software GmbH", Berg, beauftragt, einen Weltatlas in Globusform zu entwickeln. Dieser Globus sollte interaktiv, - mit Überflugfunktion in Echtzeit -, 3D-animiert und einfach zu bedienen sein. Die Anwendung wird auch im Internet genutzt werden können und mit einem One-Click-Start besonders einfach zu bedienen sein. Der Globus als Teil des voll integrierten Wissensprojektes ist mittlerweile als exklusives Produkt auf dem Markt. Damit hat sich auch die Software von Bitmanagement bewährt, die Erwartungen des Auftraggebers wurden sogar übertroffen. Die Visualisierungs-Technologie BS Contact Geo Software von Bitmanagement ermöglicht das Interagieren und ist auch auf - im Konsumentenbereich verbreiteten - Windows PCs und Laptops aller Leistungsstufen einsetzbar. Die Software basiert auf dem 3D ISO Standard VRML /X3D, der sich bereits bei den Programmierern etabliert hat und für die Nutzung im Internet konzipiert ist. Die Zahl der VRML/X3D Anwendungen im Internet hat sich in den vergangenen zwei Jahren verzehnfacht.
Aus dem ursprünglichen Kundenprojekt "Globus" hat sich jetzt ein gemeinsames Vertriebsprojekt entwickelt. Rund 75 Prozent aller Informationen basieren auf Geodaten, und die Globus-Funktionalität ist für viele Ideen und Konzepte eine wichtige Plattform. Beide Partner vermarkten im Paket die bereits aufbereiteten, optimierten und erprobten Geodaten und die darauf abgestimmte Visualisierungs-Software. Kunden die bislang bemüht waren, sich in Google Earth für teures Geld aufzuschalten, können sich jetzt zu deutlich kostengünstigeren Konditionen für das neue Geo-Angebot aus Deutschland entscheiden. - Abstract
- Reports a survey of all academic members of the Association of Research Libraries in the 4th quarter of 1997 which examined how academic libraries incorporate electronic information sources into their reference activities and the effects on libraries services. There was a response rate of 68 per cent, Compares results surveys carried out in 1991 and 1994. The survey covered: numbers of computers access options (intermediary, end user online, CD-ROM locally loaded databases or those accessible through the library catalogue and the Internet. There is a trend away from print resources, particularly indexing and abstracting materials, and away from CD-ROM LANs and local loading of databases towards remote online resources

- Abstract
- Contribution to an issue devoted on the weeding and maintenance of reference collections. CD-ROM has become part of the library universe and increasing numbers of libraries are considering the acquisition of reference tools in the new format. Issues of evaluation and selection, hardware purchase, and budget are primary concerns in this decision. Many aspects of day-to-day maintenance and access to CD-ROM sources must also be considered in the evaluation process. These issue-space, security, the care and feeding of hardware and software, reference assistance, staffing and staff training, and user instruction are vital to the success of CD-ROM in the library. Focuses particularly on literature about training for staff and users.
