    Abstract
Describes how usability testing was used to validate design recommendations WWW navigation aids. The results show a need for navigational aids that are related to the particular Website and located beneath browser buttons. Usability criteria were established that limits page changes to 4 and search times to 60 seconds for information retrieval

    Abstract
Keyword based querying has been an immediate and efficient way to specify and retrieve related information that the user inquired. However, conventional document ranking based on an automatic assessment of document relevance to the query may not be the best approach when little information is given. Proposes an idea to integrate 2 existing techniques, query expansion and relevance feedback to achieve a concept-based information search for the Web

    Abstract
Describes the design and implementation of a system for computer generation of linked HTML documents to support information retrieval and hypertext applications on the WWW. The system does not require text query input, nor any client or host processing other than hypertext linkage. The goal is to construct a fully automatic system in which original text documents are read and processed by a computer program that generates HTML files, which can be used immediately by Web browsers to search and retrieve the original documents. A user with a large collection of information: for instance, newspaper articles; can feed these documents to this program and produce directly the necessary files to establish WWW home page and related pages, to support interactive retrieval and distribution of the original documents

    Abstract
Creates an open, metadata aware system for distributed, collaborative WWW indexing. The system has 3 main components: a harvester (for collecting information), a database (for making the collection searchable), and a user interface (for making the information available). all components can be distributed across networked computers, thus supporting scalability. The system is metadata aware and thus allows searches on several fields including title, document author and URL. Nordic Web Index (NWI) is an application using this system to create a regional Nordic Web-indexing service. NWI is built using 5 collaborating service points within the Nordic countries. The NWI databases can be used to build additional services

    Abstract
A unique collection of historical material covering the lives and events of an English village between 1400 and 1750 has been made available via a WWW enabled information retrieval system. Since the expected readership of the documents ranges from school children to experienced researchers, providing this information in an easily accessible form has offered many challenges requiring tools to aid searching and browsing. The file structure of the document collection was replaced by an database, enabling query results to be presented on the fly. A Java interface displays each user's context in a form that allows for easy and intuitive relevance feedback

    Abstract
Investigates whether the latency between requesting a Web page and receiving it influence user perceptions of the page. Describes a study in which users are presented with 7 different Web pages with delays ranging from 2 secs to 2 mins, and are then asked to rate the pages on a number of criteria. Predetermined delays were injected into the page loading process. Pages which were retrieved faster were judged significantly more interesting than slower counterparts. Discusses the implications for web page design

    Abstract
Reviews the origin of the information superhighway paradigm and the many resulting national initiatives, including the US National Information Infrastructure and the world wide global information infrastructure. Quotes the guiding principles, and presents a list of possible future services, together with an overview of the major technological avenues. Discusses the current prototype of the future universal information infrastructure. i.e. the Internet and the WWW. Discusses which requirements are currently satisfied by the Internet plus WWW combination, and which capabilities are not yet provided. Presents a possible scenario of evolution

    Abstract
Reports on a exploratory study of the widely popular but little understood open ended system, the WWW. Includes a case study of 10 adults taking an introductory course on technology for educators, thus providing insights into the strategies peole use for extracting information from the Web. Points to the importance of both cognitive and metacognitive strategies to successful searching

    Abstract
In this paper, we report on the second part of an empirical study designed to observe how users interact with World Wide Web resources. Applying a holistic approach, the researches examine users' cognitive, affective, and physical behaviors during user-Web interaction in order to understand better the nature of information retrieval on the Web, the needs of Web users, and the problem-solving strategies Web users employ. From analyses and the participant verbalizations collected during monitored searches, the researchers developed a taxonomy of problem solving strategies. The coding scheme was developed based on a content analysis of the integrated process data. Information from triangulation follow-up with participants via anonymously completed questionnaires, the taxonomy, and analyses of search transcripts were collected to determine 1) what problems users encountered during the interaction and how users solved these problems; and 2) which problem-solving strategies Web users considered and selected for finding factual information. The focus of the coding was on the participants' cognitive, affective, and physical behaviors in response to the components of the problems encountered, which included problems of the following types: Web interfaces, users' mental models, and the Web information sources. Searching behavior and problem-solving patterns are described and interpreted within the relevant situational context and the problems users encountered are identified and analyzed. Both the problems users faced and their problem-solving approaches endeavored evidence a strong reliance on mental models of the features available on sites, the location of those features, and other interface design concepts

    Abstract
Discusses the varieties of link information on the WWW, how the Web differs from conventional hypertext, and how the links can be exploited to build useful applications. Specific applications presented as part of the ParaSite system find individuals' homepages, new locations of moved pages and unindexed information

    Abstract
Investigates evolving notions and expressions of community and networks, in the context of educational culture which is engaged in the process of discovering the opportunities and challenges presented by communications and information technologies. Parallel to this is the task of identifying key elements or threads that might be common to a wide diversity of educational electronic communities

    Abstract
The Nordic WAIS/WWW project sponsored by NORDINFO is a joint project between Lund University Library and the National Technological Library of Denmark. It aims to improve the existing networked information discovery and retrieval tools Wide Area Information System (WAIS) and World Wide Web (WWW), and to move towards unifying WWW and WAIS. Details current results focusing on the WAIS side of the project. Describes research into automatic indexing and classification of WAIS sources, development of an orientation tool for WAIS, and development of a WAIS index of WWW resources
