    Abstract
Provides a framework for analysing the utility, usability and likeability of net and web services and illustrates its application to significant aspects of supporting scholarly communities. The utility of the net and web are measured in terms of the growth of usage and the different services involved are distinguished in terms of their specific utilities. A layered protocol model is used to model discourse through the net and is extended to encompass interaction in communities. An operational criterion for distinguishing different communities is defined in terms of the types of awareness that resource providers and user have of one another. Develops a temporal model of discourse that enables the spectrum of services ranging from real-time discourse to long-term publication to be analyzed in a unified framework. The dimensions of awareness and time are used to characterise and compare the full range of net services and model their unification through the next generation of web browsers

    Abstract
Presents WebTagger, an implemented prototype of a personal book marking service that provides both individuals and groups with a customisable means of organizing and accessing Web-based information resources. The service enables users to supply feedback on the utility of these resources relative to their informatio needs, and provides dynamically updated ranking of resources based on incremental user feedback. Individuals may access the service from anywhere on the Internet and require no special software. The service simplifies the process of sharing URLs within groups, in comparison with manual methods involving email. The underlying bookmark organization scheme is more natural and flexible than current hierarchical schemes supported by the major Web browsers and enables rapid access to stored bookmarks

    Abstract
Corporations offering a Web site have a perspective different to that of an online searcher: they aim to embed the information content within processes and algorithms of an interactive character that create a customer or add value to an existing customer. Explains the indexing techniques they use and how searchers can cope with this trend

    Abstract
Presents a simple server side concept for building hierarchical guided tour structures in the WWW using any existing WWW pages. The pages used within a tour need not be aware of being used. They may occur multiple times within several tours. Presents a server based implementation as a demonstration

    Abstract
Ovid has supported a sophisticated interface for searching bibliographic and full text databases for some time. It is now offering a Web based version of this interface that is capable of accessing Z39.50-compliant OPACs and databases anywhere in the world. The Ovid Web Gateway builds on the Ovid Server, thus allowing for a variety of functions and configurations at user, group and database-specific level. The Web Gateway has a selection of download formats and delivery options

    Abstract
The decision to provide access to the Internet for members of the public raises some issues, in particular how a service is to be funded. Gives examples of current practice and draws broad conclusions from a sample of opinions voiced by members of the public. It puts forward s SWOT methodology as one possible approach to assist in identifying the crucial factors in the implementation of an Internet public access service emphasising what factors must be obtained to result in a cost effective service

    Abstract
The EIA project was funded by the Online Public Access Initiative, a federal initiative of the australian Department of communications and the Arts. It was designed to establish a systematic method to introduce the Web to clients who have physical disability, are housebound, elderly, or are cognitively impaired. It was a touchscreen and kiosk Web browser to assist in overcoming various physical or cognitive hurdles
