    Abstract
Internet Newsgroup archives on services such as DejaNews offer important sources of information that may not be found elsewhere online. Describes the content of the DejaNews Database which goes back to 1995 and covers more than 14,000 newsgroups. There are 2 search options: quick search and power search. Most Web search engines offer links to DejaNews, but AltaVista offers a smaller alternative and supplement to DejaNews. Reference.COM also offers a searchable archive, as well as a useful current awareness service which allows setting up multiple searches under the user profile tab

    Abstract
Stanford University's Socrates II and University of California at Berkeley's Pathfinder are 2 USA World Wide Web based online publication access catalogues under development. They differ in their design language (how an interface functionally and visually communicates to the users). Evaluates each system's interface design and their ability to communicate functionality to users: analyzes design in terms of: colour, buttons, metaphors, layout, and basic and advanced search modes. Concludes that the design languages of both systems have the right directive and have the potential to evolve

    Abstract
Conceptual Knowledge Markup Language (CKML), an application of XML, is a new standard being promoted for the specification of online conceptual knowledge (Kent and Shrivastava, 1998). CKML follows the philosophy of Conceptual Knowledge Processing (Wille, 1982), a principled approach to knowledge representation and data analysis, which advocates the development of methodologies and techniques to support people in their rational thinking, judgement and actions. CKML was developed and is being used in the WAVE networked information discovery and retrieval system (Kent and Neuss, 1994) as a standard for the specification of conceptual knowledge

    Abstract
Illustrates how the WWW could be used to access resources on a local Z39.50 server and provide extensions to the data retrieved, offering added feature not normally found in bibliographic retrieval systems, and in particular how online ordering can be added to search results. Details a project carried out at the University of New-Brunswick

    Abstract
Corporations offering a Web site have a perspective different to that of an online searcher: they aim to embed the information content within processes and algorithms of an interactive character that create a customer or add value to an existing customer. Explains the indexing techniques they use and how searchers can cope with this trend

    Abstract
OCLC distributes several scholarly journals under its Electronic Journals Online programme, acting, in effect, as an 'electronic printer' for scholarly publishers. It is prototyping a WWW accessible version of these journals. Describes the problems encountered, detail some of the short term solutions, and highlight changes to existing standards that will enhance the use of the WWW for scholarly electronic publishing

    Abstract
The EIA project was funded by the Online Public Access Initiative, a federal initiative of the australian Department of communications and the Arts. It was designed to establish a systematic method to introduce the Web to clients who have physical disability, are housebound, elderly, or are cognitively impaired. It was a touchscreen and kiosk Web browser to assist in overcoming various physical or cognitive hurdles

    Abstract
Reports on a study of the search tactics used in searching the WWW and in dealing with difficulties such as too many postings and no relevant postings. Describes how the study was carried out, the analytical techniques used in it, and the results. Notes that with regard to tactics used to address search difficulties, no differences were found between searchers for texts and those for graphic information, and between those for known items and subject searches. Comments on the similarities and differences between the tactics used and and those used in online searching, including online catalogue searching

    Abstract
Discusses the publishing of books online on the Internet, in the USA. The issues is treated mainly in relation to trade publishers. Outlines various ways in which such publishers have so far used the Internet, for example in the publishing of the full text of works of fiction, for publishing catalogues, and for presenting authors to the public via bulletin boards or electronic conferences. Notes a number or problems which arise: copyright, payment for accessing items, advertising restrictions, and the ease with which the published unit can be tampered with when available on the Internet. Also discusses collaboration and conflicts between publishers and the technology industry
