    Abstract
Describes a novel visual user interface, WebIFQ (Web-In-Frame-Query), to assist users in specifying queries and visualising query criteria including document metadata, strucutres, and linkage information. WebIFQ automatically generates corresponding query statements for WebDB. As a result, users are not required to be aware of underlying complex schema design and language syntax. WebDB supports automated query relaxation to include additional terms related by semantic or co-occurence relationship. WebIFQ can facilitate users to reformulate queries perpetually in an interactive mode

    Abstract
Presents an approach that integrates searching and browsing in a manner that improves both paradigms. When browsing is the primary task, it enables semantic content-based tailoring of Web maps in both the generation as well as the visualization phases. When search is the primary task, it enables contextualization of the results by augmenting them with the documents' neighbourhoods. This approach is embodied in WebCutter, a client-server system fully integrated with Web software. WebCutter consists of a map generator running off a standard Web server and a map visualization client implemented as a Java applet runalble from any standard Web browser and requiring no installation or external plug-in application. WebCutter is in beta stage and is in the process of being integrated into the Lotus Domino application product line

    Abstract
Richer graph models permit authors to 'program' the browsing behaviour they want WWW readers to see by turning the hypertext into a hyperprogram with specific semantics. Multiple browsing streams can be started under the author's control and then kept in step through the synchronization mechanisms provided by the graph model. Adds a Semantic Web Graph Layer (SWGL) which allows dynamic interpretation of link and node structures according to graph models. Details the SWGL and its architecture, some sample protocol implementations, and the latest extensions to MHTML

    Abstract
Keyword based querying has been an immediate and efficient way to specify and retrieve related information that the user inquired. However, conventional document ranking based on an automatic assessment of document relevance to the query may not be the best approach when little information is given. Proposes an idea to integrate 2 existing techniques, query expansion and relevance feedback to achieve a concept-based information search for the Web

    Abstract
Describes the design and implementation of a system for computer generation of linked HTML documents to support information retrieval and hypertext applications on the WWW. The system does not require text query input, nor any client or host processing other than hypertext linkage. The goal is to construct a fully automatic system in which original text documents are read and processed by a computer program that generates HTML files, which can be used immediately by Web browsers to search and retrieve the original documents. A user with a large collection of information: for instance, newspaper articles; can feed these documents to this program and produce directly the necessary files to establish WWW home page and related pages, to support interactive retrieval and distribution of the original documents

    Abstract
Describes how usability testing was used to validate design recommendations WWW navigation aids. The results show a need for navigational aids that are related to the particular Website and located beneath browser buttons. Usability criteria were established that limits page changes to 4 and search times to 60 seconds for information retrieval

    Abstract
Describes FAQ Finder, a natural language question-answering system that uses files of frequently asked questions as its knowledge base. Unlike information retrieval approaches that rely on a purely lexical metric of similarity between query and document, FAQ Finder uses a semantic knowledge base (Wordnet) to improve its ability to match question and answer. Includes results from an evaluation of the system's performance and shows that a combination of semantic and statistical techniques works better than any single approach

    Abstract
We present a declarative language for the construction of hypertext views on databases. The language is based on an object-oriented data model and a simple hypertext model with reference and inclusion links. A hypertext view specification consists in a collection of parameterized node schemes which specify how to construct node and links instances from the database contents. We show how this language can express different issues in hypertext view design. These include: the direct mapping of objects to nodes; the construction of complex nodes based on sets of objects; the representation of polymorphic sets of objects; and the representation of tree and graph structures. We have defined sublanguages corresponding to particular database models (relational, semantic, object-oriented) and implemented tools to generate Web views for these database models

    Abstract
Creates an open, metadata aware system for distributed, collaborative WWW indexing. The system has 3 main components: a harvester (for collecting information), a database (for making the collection searchable), and a user interface (for making the information available). all components can be distributed across networked computers, thus supporting scalability. The system is metadata aware and thus allows searches on several fields including title, document author and URL. Nordic Web Index (NWI) is an application using this system to create a regional Nordic Web-indexing service. NWI is built using 5 collaborating service points within the Nordic countries. The NWI databases can be used to build additional services

    Abstract
Presents the findings of the South Ayrshire Libraries OPen Learning and the Internet project, Sep 1997 to Oct 1998. The objective was to demonstrate how open learning materials available on the Internet could be integrated with the provision of local open learning resources to provide an enhanced learning environment in public libraries. The main areas of concentration within the project were information skills support to public library users and the provision of WWW based independent materials to learners. The organisation and retrieval of Web based resources for local use was a major issue throughout the project. Recommends the adoption of Dublin Core metadata standards, the connection of databases of resources with searchable wen pages, and the development of thesauri of terms used to index the Web based resources locally. Sstaff training, and the new skills which will need to be developed, were identified as issues. Cost was also identified as a related issue, extending to issues such as access to open learning material and the Internet

    Abstract
A unique collection of historical material covering the lives and events of an English village between 1400 and 1750 has been made available via a WWW enabled information retrieval system. Since the expected readership of the documents ranges from school children to experienced researchers, providing this information in an easily accessible form has offered many challenges requiring tools to aid searching and browsing. The file structure of the document collection was replaced by an database, enabling query results to be presented on the fly. A Java interface displays each user's context in a form that allows for easy and intuitive relevance feedback

    Abstract
Gives an overview of information retrieval on the WWW. Discusses the characteristics of the digital library and the WWW. Explains information retrieval problems in the context of the WWW, and outlines the responses of developers of information retrieval systems to this problem. Indicates how WWW search services might be improved through the further exploration of ideas developed in the field of library science and artificial intelligence

    Abstract
The Dublin Core is a 15 element set intended to facilitate discovery of electronic resources. Its characteristics are: simplicity, semantic interoperability, international consensus, flexibility, metadata modularity on the Web and a metadata architecture for the Web. The WWW Consortium is developing the Resource Description Framework to support different metadata needs. It will support 3 resource description models: embedded metadata, third party metadata, and view filter. Development continues into: refinement of elements, user education and application guides, metadata registries, tools and standardization. Includes a list of related Web sites and details of the core elements
