Rez. in: JASIST 55(2004) no.3, S.275-276 (C. Chen): "This is a book about finding significant statistical patterns on the Web - in particular, patterns that are associated with hypertext documents, topics, hyperlinks, and queries. The term pattern in this book refers to dependencies among such items. On the one hand, the Web contains useful information an just about every topic under the sun. On the other hand, just like searching for a needle in a haystack, one would need powerful tools to locate useful information an the vast land of the Web. Soumen Chakrabarti's book focuses an a wide range of techniques for machine learning and data mining an the Web. The goal of the book is to provide both the technical Background and tools and tricks of the trade of Web content mining. Much of the technical content reflects the state of the art between 1995 and 2002. The targeted audience is researchers and innovative developers in this area, as well as newcomers who intend to enter this area. The book begins with an introduction chapter. The introduction chapter explains fundamental concepts such as crawling and indexing as well as clustering and classification. The remaining eight chapters are organized into three parts: i) infrastructure, ii) learning and iii) applications.
Part I, Infrastructure, has two chapters: Chapter 2 on crawling the Web and Chapter 3 an Web search and information retrieval. The second part of the book, containing chapters 4, 5, and 6, is the centerpiece. This part specifically focuses an machine learning in the context of hypertext. Part III is a collection of applications that utilize the techniques described in earlier chapters. Chapter 7 is an social network analysis. Chapter 8 is an resource discovery. Chapter 9 is an the future of Web mining. Overall, this is a valuable reference book for researchers and developers in the field of Web mining. It should be particularly useful for those who would like to design and probably code their own Computer programs out of the equations and pseudocodes an most of the pages. For a student, the most valuable feature of the book is perhaps the formal and consistent treatments of concepts across the board. For what is behind and beyond the technical details, one has to either dig deeper into the bibliographic notes at the end of each chapter, or resort to more in-depth analysis of relevant subjects in the literature. lf you are looking for successful stories about Web mining or hard-way-learned lessons of failures, this is not the book."

    Abstract
Google News and other newsbots have automated the process of news selection, providing Internet users with a virtually limitless array of news and public information dynamically culled from thousands of news organizations all over the world. In order to help users cope with the resultant overload of information, news leads are typically accompanied by three cues: (a) the name of the primary source from which the headline and lead were borrowed, (b) the time elapsed since the story broke, and (c) the number of related articles written about this story by other news organizations tracked by the newsbot. This article investigates the psychological significance of these cues by positing that the information scent transmitted by each cue triggers a distinct heuristic (mental shortcut) that tends to influence online users' perceptions of a given news item, with implications for their assessment of the item's relevance to their information needs and interests. A large 2 x 3 x 6 withinsubjects online experiment (N = 523) systematically varied two levels of the source credibility cue, three levels of the upload recency cue and six levels of the number-ofrelated-articles cue in an effort to investigate their effects upon perceived message credibility, newsworthiness, and likelihood of clicking on the news lead. Results showed evidence for source primacy effect, and some indication of a cue-cumulation effect when source credibility is low. Findings are discussed in the context of machine and bandwagon heuristics.

    Abstract
The theme of "Organizing the Internet" brings to mind the late 1950s folk-rock singer Jimmie Rodgers's song titled "The World I Used to Know." A great many developments have transpired in the world of information science since the seminal works of S. C. Bradford, Claude Shannon, Vannevar Bush, and numerous other pioneers. To those of us who have been in the information science field for several decades, the peek-a-boo devices such as Termatrex, Mortimer Taube's Uniterm cards, and discussion of pre- and postcoordinate indexing have given way to the world of browsers, HTML, XML, and numerous other ways of coding text and multimedia. The Internet and the World Wide Web have had a profound impact on how we go about storing and retrieving information. Document integrity has become transient, with little assurance that the location, existence, or even the content of a publication will be the same tomorrow as even a few minutes ago. We are often hard-pressed to determine if the failure to retrieve a publication is one associated with network infrastructure or the publisher. The dream of universal bibliographic control seems quite remote. By being able to bypass traditional publication channels, anyone can publish virtually at will. The situation becomes more chaotic when we consider the increasing redundancy of knowledge and the rampant proliferation of misinformation and disinformation, to say nothing of social concerns with pornography, copyright violations, and other flagrant obtrusions into personal rights. Nevertheless, it behooves the information worker and the information user to make some sense of order if good information is to remain the basis of learning and decision making, and if documents are to continue as an archive of human knowledge.

    Abstract
The BAER Web Resources Group was charged in October 1999 with defining and describing the parameters of electronic resources that do not clearly belong to the categories being defined by the BAER Digital Group or the BAER Electronic Journals Group. After some difficulty identifying precisely which resources fell under the Group's charge, we finally named the following types of resources for our consideration: web sites, electronic texts, indexes, databases and abstracts, online reference resources, and networked and non-networked CD-ROMs. Electronic resources are a vast and growing collection that touch nearly every department within the Library. It is unrealistic to think one department can effectively administer all aspects of the collection. The Group then began to focus on the concern of bibliographic access to these varied resources, and to define parameters for handling or processing them within the Library. Some key elements became evident as the work progressed. * Selection process of resources to be acquired for the collection * Duplication of effort * Use of CORC * Resource Finder design * Maintenance of Resource Finder * CD-ROMs not networked * Communications * Voyager search limitations. An unexpected collaboration with the Web Development Committee on the Resource Finder helped to steer the Group to more detailed descriptions of bibliographic access. This collaboration included development of data elements for the Resource Finder database, and some discussions on Library staff processing of the resources. The Web Resources Group invited expert testimony to help the Group broaden its view to envision public use of the resources and discuss concerns related to technical services processing. The first testimony came from members of the Resource Finder Committee. Some background information on the Web Development Resource Finder Committee was shared. The second testimony was from librarians who select electronic texts. Three main themes were addressed: accessing CD-ROMs; the issue of including non-networked CD-ROMs in the Resource Finder; and, some special concerns about electronic texts. The third testimony came from librarians who select indexes and abstracts and also provide Reference services. Appendices to this report include minutes of the meetings with the experts (Appendix A), a list of proposed data elements to be used in the Resource Finder (Appendix B), and recommendations made to the Resource Finder Committee (Appendix C). Below are summaries of the key elements.
