    Abstract
    Examines the future for catalogues and cataloguers. Traces developments over the last decade: automation, networks, search and retrieve protocols and pwerful new PCs, which have forced and enabled massive cataloguing changes. Librarians have been good at adapting to new situations, but they have not accepted the standards developed for manual systems are not always applicable to today's automated systems. Discusses how new standards and systems can be developed to be of more relevance. Cataloguers need to be aware of the increasing digitization of material, and its impact in research and libraries, and be prepared to play their part in developing new information retrieval systems

    Abstract
    Reports results of 2 separate but related projects to study the influence of spelling errors (misspellings), made by searchers, on the subject searching of online catalogues and to suggest ways of improving error detection systems to handle the errors that they detect. This involved the categorization of user queries for subjects that were extracted from the online catalogue transaction logs of 4 USA university libraries. The research questions considered: the prevalence of misspellings in user queries for subjects; and how users respond to online catalogues that detect possible spelling errors in their subject queries. Less than 6% of user queries that match the catalogue's controlled and free text terms were found to contain spelling errors. While the majority of users corrected misspelled query words, a sizable proportion made an action that was even more detrimental than the original misspelling. Concludes with 3 recommended improvements: online catalogues should be equipped with search trees to place the burden of selecting a subject the system instead of the user; systems should be equipped with automatic spelling checking routines that inform users of possibly misspelled words; and online catalogues should be enhanced with tools and techniques to distinguish between queries that fail due to misspellings and correction failures.     Cataloguing education has been the focus of definition and ebate for over a century. Moving beyond cataloguing theory and the creation of records, to the management and process of producing catalogues, increases the complexity of demands placed on professionals and educators.     Without reform and adaptation to contemporary technology, existing paper libraries may become increasingly marginalized and eventually little more than book museums. Proposes a new method to organize access to paper resources by using relational database management systems technology to change libraries' existing data structures and concepts of organization of materials in order to create an open, shared, easy-to-use and cooperatively maintained system.     Cataloguing has always depended on choices made by non cataloguers and it has been driven by technology. Technological innovations expand the range of materials requiring bibliographic control and also improve the quality of that control. In the near future, economic factors will constrain opportunities to continue improving quality. Technological factors will continue to broaden demands on cataloguers. Inability to continue expanding the revenue streams of supporting institutions will limit cataloguer's efforts while rapid growth of information bearing technology, particularly on networks, will inflate demands for cataloguing.     Contends that library catalogues need to be seen as merely part of the information seeker's world and proposes the concept of a learning catalogue for library clients which will capture ways in which clients use data thus providing ideas for the further development of the system. Proposes a client centred system which is separated to maintain the bibliographic database from the mode of presentation of that data to the client. The designer of retrieval systems, by accepting that each client brings a unique view of the world's knowledge base to the information seeking activity, needs to acknowledge that this view of the world must be handled uniquely. By overlaying the idea of a learning component, it is possible to see how future queries might be handled more efficiently and the system can grow with client's developing needs

    The foundations of the card catalogue, catalogue use studies what can be conjectured about user needs suggest that future catalogues, as they are made possible throught the manipulations of computerized bibliographic records, ought not to take a single format. The concept of the main entry will no longer be valid at this point and multiple access points will be possible. Machine based systems will allow librarians to construct a series of catalogues to meet user needs.
