    Abstract
Libraries, their collections, and bibliographic control are essential components of the provision of access to recorded knowledge. Cataloging is a primary method of bibliographic control. Full or traditional cataloging is very expensive, but relying on keyword searching is inadequate. Alternatives for a solution to cataloging needs for electronic resources including the use of metadata and the Dublin Core are examined. Many questions exist regarding the long-term future of today's electronic documents. Recommendations are made for preserving recorded knowledge and information in the electronic resources for future generations

    Abstract
Metadata is a term to describe the information required to documents the characteristics of information contained within databases. Describes the elements that make up metadata. A number of software tools exist to help apply document management principles to electronic records but they have, so far, been inadequately applied. Describes 2 initiative currently under way to develop software to automate many records management functions. Understanding document management principles as applied to electronic records are vital to records managers

    Abstract
The term 'metadata' is becoming commonly used to refer to a variety of types of data which describe other data. A familiar example is bibliographic data, which describes a book or a serial article. Suggests that a routine definiton might be: 'metadata is data which describes attributes of a resource'. Gives some examples before looking at the Dublic Core, a simple response to the challenge of describing a wide range of network resources

    Abstract
Metadata, or 'data about data', have been created and used for centuries in the print environment, though the term has its origins in the world of electronic information management. Presents the close relationship between traditional library cataloguing and the documentation of electronic data files (known as 'metadata'), showing that cataloguing is changing under the influence of information technology, but also that metadata provision is essentially an extension of traditional cataloguing processes

    Abstract
Current hypertext systems have been widely and effectively used on relatively small data volumes. Explores the potential of database technology for aiding the implementation of hypertext systems holding very large amounts of complex data. Databases meet many requirements of the hypermedium: persistent data management, large volumes, data modelling, multi-level architecture with abstractions and views, metadata integrated with operational data, short-term transaction processing and high-level end-user languages for searching and updating data. Describes a system implementing the storage, retrieval and recall of trails through hypertext comprising textual complex objects (to illustrate the potential for the use of data bases). Discusses weaknesses in current database systems for handling the complex modelling required

    Abstract
A 1 day seminar was held in Aug 1997, in Synney, Australia, sponsored by the Information science Section of the australia Library and Information Association, on metadata. It focused on building a conceptual framework for metadata. The National Library is developing PANDORA (Preserving and Accessing Networked documentary Resources of Australia) an electronic archive designed to provide long term access to significant Australian online publications. An architecture for access to government information has been developed. The Distributed System Technology Centre's Resource Discivery Project Unit has developed an information presentation tool called HyperIndex and a meta-data searcher called HotOIL

    Abstract
Reports results of a study to evaluate the effectiveness of using the HTML META tag to improve retrieval of World Wide Web documents through Internet search engines. 20 documents were created in 5 subject areas: agricultural trade; farm business statistics; poultry statistics; vegetable statistics; and cotton statistics. 4 pages were created in each subject area: one with no META tags, one with a META tag using the keywords attribute, one with a META tag using the description attribute, and one with META tags using both the keywords and description attributes. Searches were performed in Alta Vista and Infoseek to find terms common to all pages as well as for each keyword term contained in the META tag. Analysis of the searches suggests that use of the keywords attribute in a META tag substantially improves accessibility while use of the description attribute alone does not. Concludes that HTML document authors should consider using keywords attribute META tags and suggests that more search engines index the META tag to improve resource discovery

    Abstract
To improve searching, filtering and processing of information on the Web, a common effort is made in the direction of metadata, defined as machine understandable information about Web resources or other things. In particular, the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) aims at providing a common syntax to emerging metadata formats. Proposes the Structured Graph Format (SGF) an XML compliant markup language based on structured graphs, for capturing Web sites' structure. Presents SGMapper, a client-site tool, which aims to facilitate navigation in large Web sites by generating highly interactive site maps using SGF metadata
