Reviews TFPL's The Multimedia Yearbook and CD-ROM Directory on CD-ROM, a combination of 2 printed directories, the Multimedia Yearbook and the CD-ROM Directory. Information is provided on companies involved in the multimedia and CD-ROM business and on commercial CD-ROM titles available worldwide with supporting details such as publishers' addresses. The easy to use combination of title and industry data makes this disc likely to become the standard reference source on CD-ROMm especially in the UK

    Abstract
As CD-ROMs and CD-ROM drives proliferate, their large storage capacity beckons realt ime video applications. The Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) video compression standard, that enables multimedia applications to present full screen video playback at up to 30 frames per second, promises to enhance CD-ROM applications by greatly expanding CD-ROM storage

    Abstract
Reviews the future possibilities of convergence of digital image storage and dissemination techniques, cable and high resolution television and networks such as the Internet, in bringing sophisticated multimedia information services into the home and businesses. Predicts the future of these systems in publishing, entertainment, education, health care, telephone systems, computer software use, and business and suggests that the ultimate converged system could provide homes and businesses with the means of sending and receiving information by facsimile transmission, making copies, and accessing information from CD-ROM and CD-I drives

    Abstract
Reviews the particular qualities of the CD-ROM and the World Wide Web on the Internet in their separate operation, and then makes out a case for their combined use. The need for such hybrid systems results from problems of bandwidth across networks, and presumably these difficulties may be resolved as network speeds are upgraded. In the meantime hybrid CD-ROM/WWW applications have the potential to deliver the necessary bandwidth for multimedia combined with the timeliness of the Web. The author draws on experience within AGOCG (the Advisory Group Computer graphics: a JISC initiative)

    Abstract
Discusses the features of multimedia products and those features which allow interaction, and considers the key differences between home and work use of information CD-ROMs. Sets out the criteria for the evaluation of products that are likely to contribute to the overall evaluation. These include: the information itself; methods of access; output of information; the quality and appropriateness of the media objects presented; interactive features; aesthetics and creativity; and performance, reliability and robustness

    Abstract
Real multimedia with full motion, full screen video, integrated with CD-audio quality sound, photo-realistic images and good text does not yet exist. Reviews in terms of quantity and quality existing products some of which might be better named quasi multimedia or illustrated databases. However, hardware and software now being developed for high quality sound should allow products with faster storage and transmission to be marketed at half present prices within 1 year
