    Abstract
    Traditional query methods are good at retrieving items an the basis of a precise specification, but they are not useful when the user wants to explore an information base in order to find interesting items. Dynamic Taxonomies were recently proposed for guided browsing and retrieval from heterogeneous information bases. We discuss their application to multimedia information bases and provide an example of interaction.

    Abstract
    A database management system is a general-purpose software system that facilitates the processes of defining, constructing, and manipulating databases for various applications. This article investigates the role of data management in multimedia digital libraries, and its implications for the design of database management systems. The notions of content abstraction and content independence are introduced, which clearly expose the unique challenges (for database architecture) of applications involving multimedia search.     Models administrative and operating costs surrounding a hypermedia database and determines 7 conditions for the cost justification of hypermedia; higher linking costs proportionately reduce the total number of links implemented; increasing the benefits from using the database increases the total number of links proportionately; increasing database size results in an increase in the total number of links implemented; if the database user learns from the database slowly, then a larger number of links need to be provided: the maximum size of databases which is justified on cost will increase as the average cost of linking each node becomes smaller; the total benefit from usage required in order to cost justify a database will decrease as the average cost of linking each node becomes smaller and the maximum size of database which is cost justified will increase rapidly as the learning rate increases. The learning rate can be increased by construction of links and nodes so that they are maximally informative

    Abstract
    Awareness of another's activity is an important aspect of facilitating collaboration between users, enabling an "understanding of the activities of others" (Dourish & Bellotti, 1992). In this paper we investigate the role of awareness and its effect on search performance and behaviour in collaborative multimedia retrieval. We focus on the scenario where two users are searching at the same time on the same task, and via an interface, can see the activity of the other user. The main research question asks: does awareness of another searcher aid a user when carrying out a multimedia search session? To encourage awareness, an experimental study was designed where two users were asked to compete to find as many relevant video shots as possible under different awareness conditions. These were individual search (no awareness), Mutual awareness (where both users could see the other's search screen), and unbalanced awareness (where one user is able to see the other's screen, but not vice-versa). Twelve pairs of users were recruited, and the four worst performing TRECVID 2006 search topics were used as search tasks, under four different awareness conditions. We present the results of this study, followed by a discussion of the implications for multimedia information retrieval systems.

    Abstract
    This paper centres on the tools for the management of new digital documents, which are not only textual, but also visual-video, audio or multimedia in the full sense. Among the aims is to demonstrate that operating within the terms of generic Information Retrieval through textual language only is limiting, and it is instead necessary to consider ampler criteria, such as those of MultiMedia Information Retrieval, according to which, every type of digital document can be analyzed and searched by the proper elements of language for its proper nature. MMIR is presented as the organic complex of the systems of Text Retrieval, Visual Retrieval, Video Retrieval, and Audio Retrieval, each of which has an approach to information management that handles the concrete textual, visual, audio, or video content of the documents directly, here defined as content-based. In conclusion, the limits of this content-based objective access to documents is underlined. The discrepancy known as the semantic gap is that which occurs between semantic-interpretive access and content-based access. Finally, the integration of these conceptions is explained, gathering and composing the merits and the advantages of each of the approaches and of the systems to access to information.

    Abstract
    By referring to existing prototypes and systems, in this paper the advantages and disadvantages of computer and multimedia technologies in the development of reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopedias are discussed. Some positive aspects of multimedia reference works are the possibility of accessing the same entry through a number of keys and research mechanisms, the possibility of 'navigating' through the semantic structure of the work itself, and even crossing the borders between different underlying structures. Some systems permit users to select the type of information they desire regarding a certain entry. This characteristics is particularly valuable in educational systems since it relieves users of the not so trivial task of autonomously extracting the information they need from a text which, because of the need for both conciseness and thoroughness, can be cryptic. In addition, some of theses systems not only include texts and illustrations but also audiovisual material, tutorials, and multimedia sequences with different educational and informative aims. Finally, the cost of, and time taken in, producing works of this type (except motion video production!), are potentially less than for analogous printed works with consequent repercussions on distribution costs and the frequency with which works can be updated. The major limits of multimedia dictionaries and encyclopedias are practical ones, such as the scarce availability and standardization of suitable hardware platforms.     Dow Jones & Company (NYSE:DJ) hat am 13. Juni 2007 seine Partnerschaft mit PodZinger bekannt gegeben. PodZinger ist derzeit die einzige Multimedia-Plattform, die es ermöglicht, Audio- und Videoinhalte über Schlagworte zu suchen. Diese Suchfunktion wird über die Nachrichten- und Wirtschaftsinformationsdienste Factiva.com und Factiva iWorks zur Verfügung stehen. So können Anwender ab August 2007 Video- und Audio-Informationen abrufen, darunter Wirtschaftsnachrichten, CEO-Interviews, Vorträge von führenden Managern, Jahreshauptversammlungen, Produktrezensionen und andere einschlägige Inhalte. Laut eMarketer wurden allein im Januar 2007 über 7,2 Milliarden Videostreams von mehr als 123 Millionen Konsumenten betrachtet. AccuStream iMedia erwartet ein jährliches Wachstum an Multimedia-Nutzern von 30 Prozent. Trotzdem ist es noch immer sehr zeitaufwändig, relevante Inhalte zu finden, weil die meisten Multimedia-Seiten nur begrenzt Metadaten anbieten und nur rudimentäre Suchmöglichkeiten für Audio- und Videoinhalte zur Verfügung stellen. Oft resultieren aus der Suche dann große Informationsmengen, die für den Suchenden kaum relevant sind. Das Multimedia-Angebot von Factiva basiert auf den Speech-to-Text und Natural Language Technologien von PodZinger. Genutzt wird bei Factiva Multimedia auch das patentierte Factiva Intelligent Indexing(TM), und Suchergebnisse werden in Form von Charts und Grafiken dargestellt. Der Anwender erhält damit einen Überblick über den Kontext seiner Recherche. Gemäß einer Studie, die PodZinger 2006 in Auftrag gegeben hatte, hören oder schauen sich Menschen nur rund 15 Prozent einer Audio- oder Videodatei an. Dow Jones kombiniert die Stärken von Factiva und PodZinger zu einer einzigartigen Multimedia-Suchmaschine. Relevante Inhalte können mit Hilfe von spezifischen Suchbegriffen herausgefiltert werden. Anschließend können die Anwender selbst entscheiden, ob sie den gesamten Clip oder nur den für ihn relevanten Teil sehen oder hören wollen. Das Multimedia Angebot von Factiva umfasst ergänzend: Kontinuierlich aktualisierte Inhalte aus mehr als 4.000 Nachrichten- und Wirtschaftsquellen mit mehr als 300.000 Clips.     Abstract
    Relevance has been a difficult concept to define, let alone measure. In this paper, a simple operational definition of relevance is proposed for a Web-based library catalog: whether or not during a search session the user saves, prints, mails, or downloads a citation. If one of those actions is performed, the session is considered relevant to the user. An analysis is presented illustrating the advantages and disadvantages of this definition. With this definition and good transaction logging, it is possible to ascertain the relevance of a session. This was done for 905,970 sessions conducted with the University of California's Melvyl online catalog. Next, a methodology was developed to try to predict the relevance of a session. A number of variables were defined that characterize a session, none of which used any demographic information about the user. The values of the variables were computed for the sessions. Principal components analysis was used to extract a new set of variables out of the original set. A stratified random sampling technique was used to form ten strata such that each new strata of 90,570 sessions contained the same proportion of relevant to nonrelevant sessions. Logistic regression was used to ascertain the regression coefficients for nine of the ten strata. Then, the coefficients were used to predict the relevance of the sessions in the missing strata. Overall, 17.85% of the sessions were determined to be relevant. The predicted number of relevant sessions for all ten strata was 11 %, a 6.85% difference. The authors believe that the methodology can be further refined and the prediction improved. This methodology could also have significant application in improving user searching and also in predicting electronic commerce buying decisions without the use of personal demographic data
