- Abstract
- Most commercial on-line information retrieval systems are not designed to service end users and, therefore, have often built front-ends to their systems specifically to serve the end user market. These front ends have not been well accepted, mostly because the underlying systems are still difficult for end users to use successfully in searching. New techniques, based on statistical methods, that allow natural language input and return lists of records in order of likely relevance, have long been available from research laboratories. Presents 4 prototype implementations of these statistical retrieval systems that demonstrate their potential as powerful and easily used retrieval systems able to service all users. The systems consist of: the PRISE system; the CITE system; the Muscat system; and the News Retrieval Tool

- Abstract
- Contribution to a thematic issue devoted to subject control in on-line catalogues. Keyword searching with Boolean operators was impossible in the traditional on-line catalogue and its promised benefits in on-line systems are not yet clear. Reports on a survey undertaken at Brigham Young University library, Utah, which investigated this issue when the library was selected as a test site for keyword searching in the NOTIS on-line catalogue. Results of the survey were mixed. While keyword searching will require increased computer capacity for unstricted use, students, though content with the new tool, are not adept at using its sophisticated features and will require much more training than for the basic NOTIS on-line catalogue.

- Abstract
- Popular commercial on-line services such as Google, e-Bay, Amazon, and Netflix have evolved quickly over the last decade to help people find what they want, developing information retrieval strategies such as usefully ranked results, spelling correction, and recommender systems. Online library catalogs (OPACs), in contrast, have changed little and are notoriously difficult for patrons to use (University of California Libraries, 2005). Over the past year (June 2005 to the present), the Melvyl Recommender Project (California Digital Library, 2005) has been exploring methods and feasibility of closing the gap between features that library patrons want and have come to expect from information retrieval systems and what libraries are currently equipped to deliver. The project team conducted exploratory work in five topic areas: relevance ranking, auto-correction, use of a text-based discovery system, user interface strategies, and recommending. This article focuses specifically on the recommending portion of the project and potential extensions to that work.

- Abstract
- Fac-Back-OPAC is a faceted back up OPAC. This advanced catalog offers features that compare favorably with the traditional catalogs for today's library systems. Fac-Back-OPAC represents the convergence of two prominent trends in library tools: the decoupling of discovery tools from the traditional integrated library system and the use of readily available open source components to rapidly produce leading-edge technology for meeting patron and library needs. Built on code that was originally developed by Casey Durfee in February 2007, Fac-Back-OPAC is available for no cost under an open source license to any library that wants to offer an advanced search interface or a backup catalog for its patrons.

- For decades print pathfinders have complemented card catalogues and been useful reference tools. They are overlooked as components of online catalogues, even though they can extend the depth of the catalogue. To encourage librarians to consider integrating pathfinders into online catalogues discusses problems in OPAC searching, describes the value and styles of pathfinders, and illustrates how to include them in a NOTIS system

- Abstract
- 2nd of two articles based on the results of a survey of on-line public access catalogues (OPACs) in public libraries carried out by Manchester Library School. 20 UK libraries provided data for the survey. Discusses types of OPAC configurations in use, suppliers of systems, help facilities, display of data, and subject searching on OPACs. Concludes that, in general, OPACs make accessing a catalogue easy and that this encourages catalogue use, resulting in increased document demand levels and in more satisfied customers.

- Abstract
- FirstSearch is an on-line reference product from OCLC, launched in Oct. 91, that offers inexperienced end users searches easy access to on-line data bases through a simple menu interface. The flagship data base on the OCLC FirstSearch system is the Online Union Catalogue (Called WorldCat on FirstSearch). 14 data bases are available at time of press with a further 18 planned by the end of 1992. Although pricing of OCLC'a EPIC service is based on the standard connect time and display charges, the need for more predictable methods of charging led to FirstSearch use being sold in blocks of 500 searches. Bulk buying of blocks reduces the price per search from 90 cents (for 1 block) to 45 cents (from 160 blocks and above). Describes the experiences of Allen County Public Library, Indiana, one of the only 2 public libraries among the 16 initial test sites for FirstSearch

- Abstract
- The physical organisation of items on library shelves using any classification scheme is inevitable a compromise. The best efforts to achieve an arrangement that is helpful to users will be thwarted by the multifaceted nature of these items and the specific needs of the user and the library. Items on a particular subject will be scattered throughout the library building(s) across disciplines, by physical form, by frequency of use and whether and for how long they may be borrowed. Even thought he rich information content of multifaceted items may be represented in the notation, the items required by a user will be scattered across library shelves when the item is placed in a single relative location. This paper explores these issues uisng examples from a University Library classified using the DDC. The electronic context of the library OPAC can transcend the constraints imposed by the predominantly physical nature of library collections, yet the current use of classification schemes in on-line systems retains many of these limitations. Examples of such systems applying DDC on the WWW are discussed and compared with a system that seeks to use DDC in what is called view-based searching. The interface and the resulting browsing and searching capability of a view-based OPAC are described. Ways in which subject access to library collections can be improved and disciplinary scatter resolved by assigning multiple class number to items and exploiting the rich Dewey structure in a faceted form are discussed. It is suggested that the informative power of visual classificatory structures at the search interface will be beneficial to the broader learning experience of the user. The paper concludes that the application of classification schemes in electronic interfaces should not be bound by the the physical constraints that no longer apply in an electronic context but be exploited to provide a complete, flexible and individual interface as determined by the needs of each user
