    Abstract
    Reports the results of a questionnaire survey of 414 libraries in 4 categories: academic libraries; school libraries; public libraries and special libraries; to assess the status of library training initiatives with respect to the libraries' OPACs. Answers were sought to 3 questions: how have libraries modifoed OPAC software; have libraries developed any instructional methods for teaching the use of OPACs; and to what extent are online catalogues self instructional? Results show that most participants' libraries have modofied library OPAC software; librarians continue to teach use of the online catalogue, depending heavily on handouts; few systems have built-in tutorials for users; and very fes have developed computer assisted instruction for the OPAC

    Abstract
    The presence of different interfaces to use online catalogues has caused difficulties, particularly for remote users. To tackle this problem 13 university campuses in New South Wales linked their online catalogues together to form a network called LIBLINK (a subnet of the Australian Academic Research Network, AARNET). The key to the success of the network is the user searching software, PINS (Practical Interface to Network System), a set of fourth generation language software tools. Suggests that LIBLINK can be a simple solution for other libraries around the world

    Abstract
    This paper surveys card-image public access catalogues (CIPACs) - online library catalogues based an databases of digitised catalogue cards and more or less sophisticated mechanisms for browsing or searching. Solutions of this kind have been implemented by a number of libraries in various countries since the mid-1990s, mainly as inexpensive altematives to a full retrospective conversion of their old catalogues. The article presents a Web page dedicated to CIPACs, identifies and describes four main categories of interface software for such catalogues, and provides a comparative overview of 50 CIPACs in 11 countries, looking at aspects such as geographical distribution, growth and size, software, number of catalogues, processing and index creation, navigation, image formats, and other features.

    The MacNOTIS interface development and test used the Apple Macintosh, HyperCard, and MitemView communications Software to develop and test an intuitive interface to NOTIS systems. While the concept and design were viewed favorably by the users, technical and speed issues made the interface too slow for widespread use.     Abstract
    Existing Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) demonstrate differences in the range and complexity of their functional features, terminology, and help facilities. Many libraries already have OPACs and many of them have a need for guidelines that help them to design or redesign the displays for their OPACs, taking their users' needs into account. This book provides such guidelines, recommendations and a corpus of good practice to assist libraries in this process. The audience for these guidelines is librarians charged with customising OPAC software and vendors and producers of this software. The guidelines are mainly designed for general libraries with collections of resources in the humanities, the social sciences, and the pure and applied sciences. They are intended to apply to any type of catalogue, independently of the kind of interface and technology used. This is the Final Report of a Task Force an the matter, which was approved by the Standing Committee of the IFLA Cataloguing Section.

    Abstract
    In Nov. 1988 the Caltech Library made available to its users a new service which combines online access to journal citations located at Caltech with document delivery. This service evolved over several years, beginning with efforts to include the citation access in the library's integrated library system and culminating in the purchase of the powerful BRS/Search software to run on a small IBM mainframe specifically to support this project. Various decisions about implementation were made along the way, with no perfect solution being reached.     Abstract
    A computerised presentation teaching method of NOTIS commands and search strategies in on-line catalogues was produced using ShowPartner F/X software. Students viewed the presentation and completed a NOTIS search exercise. A 2nd group of students from the same class completed the exercise without having viewed the presentation. A comparison of the 2 groups' exercises and transaction logs show that the group that viewed the presentation proved better at using correct NOTIS commands and formulationg effective search strategies. The greatest differences between the 2 groups were in subject searching (LCSH and keyword) and in locating specific items

    Abstract
    OLIVE, a transaction logging facility enhanced with online questionnaires, was used to collect data from users of public and academic library catalogues. The comparative analysis of subject searching behaviour focused on the role of browsing subject headings and brief references in search formulation. Opportunities for browsing are greatly constrained by indexing practices. It is suggested that a more integrated approach to pre-coordinate and post-coordinate searching would be more effective. The logging software has been developed for a number of commercial online catalogues including Geac, CLSI and LIBERTAS.     Describes a study that examined the instances and causes of problems with keyword subject searching of journal citation databases. The researchers employed 3 methods, and in so doing, tested their viability in developing a cohesive record of user searching activities and attitudes: transaction log analysis, survey questionnaire, and protocol analysis.
