    Abstract
The increasing expansion of the Internet has made resources available to users in sometimes unmanageable abundance. To help users manage this proliferation of information, librarians have begun to add URLs to their home pages. As well, specialized search engines are being used to retrieve information from selected sources in aneffort to return pertinent results. Describes the Harvest system which has been used to develop Index Antiquus, a specialized engine, for the classics and mediaeval studies. Presents a working example of how to search Index Antiquus

    Abstract
The days of the traditional abstracting and indexing services are waning, as abstracts and bibliographic data become commodities. However, there are tremedous opportunities for those organizations willing to look beyond the status quo to the new possibilities enabled by the latest wave of advanced technologies. Those who own content need to focus on the delivery mechanisms and new markets that technology can provide. Features like automatic extraction of key concepts or names, collaborative filtering to help with trend analysis, and visualization techniques can take information past the retrieval stage and into the management area

    Abstract
The vast sources of information, in formatted files, online publications requiring registratiion and login, many statistical files as well as subject databases where results appear as dynamically created HTML pages, are not accessible to Web spiders and thus constitute a hidden Internet. In addition there are non-Web resources such as ftp archives where such materials as research papers can be obtained free. Explains a number of approaches to the hidden Internet including using the list 'Direct links to the search interfaces of resources not easily searchable ..." compiled at the Gelman Library, George Washington University and the Internet Sleuth. Also reviews publications to aid those using Photoshop for designing graphics

    Abstract
The quality of information on the Internet is varied. Examines some of the review services available and their evaluation criteria: cool sites, Excite, GNN Select, Magellan, CyberHound, iGuide, Yahoo!, Internet Life, Point and services from librarians. The latter services follow print reviewing criteria. Discusses how these criteria can be modified for use with digital resources, stressing that current reviewing processes on the Internet need to change to ensure quality

    Abstract
The explosion of the use of the Internet by the genral public, particularly via the WWW, has given rise to the proliferation of semiprofessional attempts to give some subject based access to Internet resources via hierarchical guides (hotlists) on Web search engines such as Yahoo and Magellan. Examines the structure and principles of various hierachical lists, and compares them, when possible, to broad LCC and DDC schemes, and to LCSH. Explores the approaches taken by non librarians in their efforts to organize and provide access to materials on the Internet. Focuses on the dichotomy between the hierarchical 'browse' and the analytical 'search' approaches to finding materials, as exemplified by these various attempts to organize the Internet

    Abstract
To use the electronic resources of the Internet effectively, reference librarians must learn to use the various search engines to their best advantage. Describes the following Web sites which provide help for librarians in improving their Internet searching skills: the Bergen County Cooperative Library System which has links to some well-known directories and search engines; the Spider's Apprentice, which provides ratings and in-depth analysis of search engines, a FAQ document useful to the beginning searcher, and an online discussion forum; ZDNet's WebSearchUser which has feature articles, reviews and tutorials; and Search Engine Watch which reports new developments in search engines. URLs for these and other resources are given

    Abstract
A guide to subject guides on the Internet which have been created by librarians and which are accessible through WWW. Stresses their superiority over the general subject guides to the WWW such as Yahoo and Global Network Navigator, in that they provide the resources most useful to their clientele, are highly organized and add helpful commentary to their lists. Provides 2 lists, one for public and school libraries, the secon for academic libraries

    Abstract
WWW robots are programs that attempt to gather and index WWW resources. They reside on a host computer and retrieve information from sites on the WWW using standrad protocols. Gives an overview of robots, and robot generated databases. Covers: WWW Worm; Lycos, WebCrawler; AliWeb; Harvest; Jumpstation II, and Open Text Index. Also discusses Yahoo and Trade Wave which are comparable tools for resource discovery

    Abstract
Evaluates the use of Lycos and InfoSeek search tools for information discovery of the WWW. Compares the services offered focusing on: search interfaces and languages, collection size and content, quality and indexing issues and the increasing move towards commercialisation of tools on the WWW which are used for organising and cataloguing resources

    Abstract
Compares 3 WWW search engines (AltaVista, Excite, and Lycos) in terms of their search capabilities and retrieval performances using sample queires drawn from real reference questions. AltaVista outperformed Excite and Lycos in both search facilities and retrieval performance although Lycos had the largest coverage of WWW resources among the 3 WWW search engines examined. Proposes a methodology for evaluating other WWW search engines

    Abstract
Discusses search engines or rules for finding information and describes methods which can be used by techers, librarians, parents and students to improve the use of search engines whether on the WWW or in other environments. These involve establishing which resources are searched, the reliability of the quality of the information obtained, and the information retrieval process used

Search Engine Watch is a WWW meta site giving organized, up-to-date information on WWW search engines. It is mostly free with a $25 charge for extra subscriber services. It has valuable links to a wide variety of other resources and charts comparing services. Despite its informality and idiosyncrasies of an individually sponsored service, it is an useful site

    Abstract
Resource discovery is the problem of locating, and keeping track of, documents and other resources available on the Internet. Investigates some of the techniques that are currently being employed to help solve this problem. These include manually created catalogue records, centralized robot indexes, distributed indexing technology and author supplied metadata

Northern Light is part WWW search engine and part full text database. The latter is called Special Collection and consists of fulltext articles from 1.800 journals, newswires and other resources. Searching, bibliographic information and summaries are free but with prices per article ranging from $1 to $4 of a monthly subscription for 50 documents from a 880 journal subset. Highlights weaknesses with the software
