    Abstract
Presents a brief, critical review of LISA PLaus: the CD-ROM database version of LISA and which includes the database of Current Research in Library and Information Science (CRLIS). The review covers the DOS version only, as it appeared in the Summer 1996 CD-ROM, noting that the Windows version was planned for the future. Points to the way LISA has found its mark, if not its fortune, in LISA Plus and notes its strengths, including: ideal suitability for current awareness in library and information science (LIS); massive and convenient consolidation of the published LIS literature; and massive increase in coverage from 7.900 abstracts in 1993 to over 12.000 currently. Criticizes certain features of LISA Plus, notably: the OPTI-Ware search interface; the combination of 2 databases (LISA and CRLIS) in a single, searchable database; and certain unexpected effects caused by the building of the Subject and Free Text indexes. Points particularly to great lack of consistency in the indexes and the indexing (faults that were fully rectified by a complete overhaul of the data in Summer 1996). Notes that LISA Plus is the first port of call for both information researchers and information science students. The Windows version of LISA Plus was launched in Spring 1997

    Abstract
Assesses the appropriateness of graphic user interfaces (GUI), and more specifically the Windows based interfaces used for CD-ROM database applications. An evaluation model was devised to carry out an expert evaluation of the interfaces of 7 CD-ROM databases: Economist on CD-ROM; ADMYTE (Digital Archive of Spanish Texts and Manuscripts); English Poetry (Chadwyck-Healey); Oxford English Dictionary 2nd ed. on CD-ROM; Perinorm; OVID Medline and WinSPIRS Medline. The model identified 2 levels of interaction, the dialogue level aand the task level, and focused on general interface features, search and retrieval tasks, and output and processing options as well as the help facilities. Results are discussed in the light of HCI Usability Criteria and design guidelines (including general interface design guidelines, specific Windows design guidelines and the CD-ROM Consistent Interface Guidelines) to assess to what extent the applications comply and appropriate recommendations make

    Abstract
Describes an experiment using 48 sixth-grade students to compare retrieval techniques using the print and CD-ROM versions of Compton's Encyclopedia. Four queries of defferent complexity (measured by the numer of terms present) were searched by the students after a short training session. The searches were timed and the retrieval steps and search terms were noted. The searches were no faster on the CD-ROM than the print version, but in both cases time was related directly to the number of terms involved. The students coped well with the CD-ROM interface and its several retrieval paths

    Abstract
Examines the growing and diverse full text CD-ROM marketplace. Attempts to discover the extent of fragmentation within this marketplace. Discusses the conflict between the design of such CD-ROMs for end user searching and the proliferation and diversification of retrieval software which bring into question the ease of use of CD-ROMs. identifies areas of expansion in this marketplace, including the home and schools' markets and specific subject areas, e.g. law, business and commerce and news information. Suggests that it will be interesting to see which search interface survive as the markets develops

    Abstract
The searching behaviour of 79 end-users of CD-ROM databases was studied at the UCLA campus libraries. The results indicate that users lack basic knowledge on how to search and consequently their searches are not effective despite their efforts. Users therefore need help through training but most importantly by improving the CD-ROM user interfaces and retrieval systems

    Abstract
Reports results of a study to compare 3 CD-ROM interfaces working on MEDLINE databases: SPIRS (ver. 3.11) and WinSPIRS (ver. 1.0) from SilverPlatter and OVID (ver. 3.0, DOS and WINDOWS interfaces) from CD Plus Technologies (now OVID Technologies). Though the database is the same, there are substantial differences between the interfaces in the way the data is presented and can be searched. Discusses these different approaches and includes a detailed comparative table. Concludes that all 3 interfaces are good yet none of them is perfect; each has desirable and unfortunate features. Together, they offer an enormous range of possibilities. Users would benefit if most of the better features listed (such as easy menu, free text retrieval, pre exploded thesaurus terms) were implemented in future versions of these interfaces and if system operators were given greater latitude to determine the system defaults appropriate to their specific situations and customers. A full, comparative table of features are presented for SPIRS, WinSPIRS, OVID(DOS) and OVID(Windows)

    Abstract
The WilsonDisc user interface for CD-ROM searching was evaluated using heuristic evaluation and observation of experienced users and used 2 Wilson Disc databases: MLA International Bibliography and Humanities Index. The heuristic evaluations identified 51 different problems, while observations found only 8. However, the major problem encountered by users: changing of the databases, was not found through heuristic evaluation. Suggests that expert evaluators explicitely consider the user interface environment, the context in which users elect to use the system
