    Abstract
    Proposes a method of organizing documents based on the concepts of aggregation and hierarchies and a graphical user interface to provide a more intuitive form of Boolean query. The design is based on mapping the nodes of the aggregation hierarchy to Boolean intersection operations, mapping the nodes of the generalization hierarchy Boolean intersection operations (?), and providing a concrete, graphical, manipulable representation of both these node types. A working prototype interface was constructed and evaluated experimentally using 16 subjects against a classical command-line Boolean query interface. The graphical interface produced less than one-tenth of the errors of the textual interface, on average. Significant differences in time spent specifying queries were not found. Makes observations and comments to provide guidance for designers

    STN Easy is a new graphic user interface for the WWW access to over 20 major online databases in business, science, technology and patents. Patent information is available from a number of Web sites but argues that STN Easy offers extensive coverage combined with both searching sophistication and operational simplicity.     MedLine Search Assistant is a new interface for MEDLINE searching. The interface is designed to (1) visualize boolean query building process, (2) extract descriptors (MeSH terms) automatically from the retrieved documents and list them in the order of their occurrence frequencies, (3) guide the user's query modification process through the display of the number of hits, and (4) allow the user to "pick-and-choose" from a list of related MeSH terms to construct search queries. MedLine Search Assistant improves both search precision and recall by helping the user convert a free text search to a controlled vocabulary-based search in a visual environment

    Abstract
    This paper outlines strategies and methods for tackling the enormous challenges presented by an emerging Information Society in which the resources of libraries and museums are gradually being made available on-line in electronic form. It begins from two fundamental premises: first, that the experience of libraries, museums, archives and similar institutions in organising, ordering, classing and accessing knowledge is an obvious point of departure for serious strategies of search and access. A second premise is that the methods used for presentation of knowledge in libraries offer valuable clues for a coherent access, interface and strategy, offering a key to a common look and feel for all our activities, be it creating, classing, publishing or accessing. Following from these premises is a new approach to the traditions of knowledge collection, organisation and retrieval. At one end of the spectrum there has been a dream that everything could be collected in one centralized institution. This inspired the Library of Alexandria, the British Museum and a host of other efforts. At the other end of the spectrum there has been an assumption that everything could be decentralised in a completely distributed system. Our claim is that neither of these extremes can work, which means that a new model is called for: a centralised repository of meta-data, a digital reference room which is effectively a cumulative collection of all existing reference sections in libraries and museums

    Presents a chart comparing the subject access features available on 4 different catalogues (card catalogues, GEAC, MELVYL and NOTIS) and develops a method for 'walking through' subject searches in different catalogues using a 'naive subject searcher' model in which searching behaviour is determined by 3 basic characteristics: a lack of understanding of how information is stored, indexed, and retrieved in library catalogues; a preference for the simplest available mode of interaction with the catalogue and a lack of any searching strategy or tactics beyond simple 'subject searching'.     Describes a research project which studied the interaction between screen design, menu interfaces and the search results obtained by users. A literature review surveys the research in theses areas, including methods used to evaluate OPACs. Draws up a set of design guidelines for menu interfaces. Two versions of the OPAC a Porirua Public Library in New Zealand were available, 1 used 'good' menu design and the other contravened the guidelines. The difference between 'no-hit' rates for the 2 terminals was not statistically significant, indicating that other factors must be considered

    Abstract
    Geographic maps are a well-established way of representing domain-specific knowledge in a way which integrates symbolic and pictorial representation. This paper proposes an interdisciplinary approach to the understanding of how maps represent and organise knowledge, combining artificial intelligence knowledge representation theory with empirical findings and methods from cognitive psychology. Schematic maps represent knowledge in a different way than topographic or city maps; in particular, distances and directions cannot be evaluated in the same way as in topographic or city maps. However, information from different types of maps must often be combined to answer everyday questions. An inference task involving such a combination, in order to locate a train station shown in a schematic map with respect to a part of a city map, was analysed theoretically with respect to how location judgments change with assumptions about what spatial information is contained in the schematic map. The same task was investigated empirically in a study in which subjects were asked to locate a train station and to describe their thinking in a subsequent verbal report. Results indicate that subjects' judgements and verbal reports can be grouped according to the theoretical analysis

    Reports progress and future plans for a project to study the interactions of users with information retrieval interfaces. Tests are run with professional data base searchers and with end users who are members of a profession but have little or no searching experience. Interfaces tested include a command language search system used to search DIALOG bibliographic data bases, a non-procedural system that produces DIALOG commands, and several full text systems, including one using hypertext. The intent is to determine which kinds of users perform best with each type of interface. The project is being conducted jointly bay the University of Toronto and the University of Maryland
