    Abstract
Compares and contrasts online searching on DataStar using the 'classic' command language, with access via the more recent Web interface (DataStar Web). The search functionality of the 2 interfaces is not identical, although both use the same retrieval software and access the same databases. Many of the differences affect retrieval effectiveness and may trip up novice and experienced searchers alike

    Abstract
A common user interface replaces the multiple interfaces found among individual electronic library resources, reducing the time and effort spent by the user in both searching and learning to use a range of databases. Although the primary function of a common user interface is to simplify the search process, such products can be holistic solutions designed to address requirements other than searching, such as user authentication and site branding. This review provides a detailed summary of software currently on the market. The products reviewed were EnCompass, MetaLib, Find-It-All OneSearch, ZPORTAL, CPORTAL, InfoTrac Total Access, MetaFind, MuseSearch, SiteSearch, Single Search, Chameleon Gateway, and WebFeat.

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the usability of a web-based OPAC (WebPAC) user interface at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). It also looks at the applicability of heuristic evaluation in designing a user-centered WebPAC interface. Design/methodology/approach - Based on Nielsen's ten usability heuristic principles, the study focuses on three heuristics only, i.e. aesthetic and minimalist design, match between interface and the real world, and visibility of interface status. Findings - Results of the study found that the WebPAC interface conforms to at least 70 percent usability properties prescribed. Usability problems violated in the interface were identified. Practical implications - The study suggests that heuristic evaluation is applicable in libraries to asses the usability of user interface for online catalogs. Originality/value - Heuristic evaluation could assist libraries in designing user-centered interface for online catalogs.

    Abstract
Reviews the development of the British Library OPAC services leading up to the launch of OPAC 97, offering access to 9 mio bibliographic records and attempts to show the value of a user centred approach in the project management involved in developing such a service as recommended by Human Computer Interaction (HCI) studies. Reviews the evaluation studies of the Online Catalogue, the Network OPAC, a web prototype interface and of OPAC 97 and discusses the results in relation to the OPAC 97 project. Although the OPAC 97 interface made use of various HCI recommendations, user feedback sometimes contradicted these in specific instances, revealing the value of detailed user evaluation in developing services

    Abstract
To explore issues of user interface design and experience, including culturally preferred design elements, a study was conducted analyzing sites in Germany, Japan, and the United States (30 municipal sites in each country). Design elements considered are use of symbols and graphics, color preferences, site features (links, maps, search functions, and page layout), language, and content. Significant modal differences were found in each of the listed categories. Outcomes from the study are used to discuss future research directions in the areas of experience design and localization.

    Abstract
Users interact with museum application interfaces for many reasons. There are various types of users, who want to perform various tasks, in various contexts, that can access the same Web site. Thus, it is important to have user interfaces able to adapt to these different user requirements to facilitate the accomplishment of the desired goals. Most current interfaces to museum information do not take into account this variety of types of users, thus providing interfaces that some users find confusing to achieve their goals. In this article we discuss the various possible levels of support that can be given to different users during navigation of museum information. In particular, we focus our attention on how to obtain adaptable and adaptive interfaces using the web site for the Marble Museum, which we have designed and developed, as a source of examples for our discussion of possible solutions

    Abstract
Reports results of an evaluation study of 3 WWW based prototypes for bibliographic displays developed as part of an ongoing research project at the Faculty of Information Studies, Toronto University. The development of these prototypes builds upon results obtained in earlier phases of the project that addressed issues of both the content and form of bibliographic displays in OPACs. Anticipation of continued growth in the number of catalogues available through the WWW, combined with research evidence that existing Web based displays have not shown improvement over their text based counterparts, motivated the development of these prototypes for use on the Web. Reports findings from a focus group evaluation of the 3 prototypes and makes suggestions for future research

    Abstract
Reports on the design of a GUI for the Okapi 'best match' retrieval system developed at the Centre for Interactive Systems Research, City University, UK, for online library catalogues. The X-Windows interface includes an interactive query expansion (IQE) facilty which involves the user in the selection of query terms to reformulate a search. Presents the design rationale, based on a game board metaphor, and describes the features of each of the stages of the search interaction. Reports on the early operational field trial and discusses relevant evaluation issues and objectives

    Abstract
The Ovid Java interface is compared with the Ovid Web Gateway and Ovid Windows Client, focusing on functionality from the user's perspective. The Java version draws upon both earlier Web and Windows versions, thus combining the worlds of the Web and application programs. It is concluded that Ovid Java offers enhanced functionality and requires high-end hardware and browser software to run well. Additional enhancements are forthcoming, some dependent upon the further development of Sun Microsystems' Java programming language

    Abstract
Almost all Web searches are carried out while the user is sitting at a conventional desktop computer connected to the Internet. Although online, handheld, mobile search offers new possibilities, the fast-paced, focused style of interaction may not be appropriate for all user search needs. The authors explore an alternative, relaxed style for Web searching that asynchronously combines an offline handheld computer and an online desktop personal computer. They discuss the role and utility of such an approach, present a tool to meet these user needs, and discuss its relation to other systems.

    Abstract
The author presents a design case study of a search user interface for Web catalogs in the context of online shopping for consumer products such as clothing, furniture, and sporting goods. The case study provides a review of the user data for the user interface (UI), and the resulting redesign recommendations. Based on the case study and its user data, a set of common user requirements for searching in the context of online shopping is provided.

Compares and evaluates the functional capabilities and interface characteristics of OPACs from the user oriented perspective, using a systematic framework. OPACs of OhioLINK and its 16 member libraries are the object of the investigation. The interfaces used 6 system software but showed a variety of features in access to OPACs, operational control, access points, search formulation control, and user assistance. Interface design alternatives are identified and qualitatively analyzed

    Abstract
A project to design a graphical user interface for the OKAPI online catalogue search system which uses the basic term weighting probabilistic search engine. Presents a research context of the project with a discussion of interface and functionality issues relating to the design of OPACs. Describes the design methodology and evaluation methodology. Presents the preliminary results of the field trial evaluation. Considers problems encountered in the field trial and discusses contributory factors to the effectiveness of interactive query expansion. Highlights the tension between usability and functionality in highly interactive retrieval and suggests further areas of research

    Abstract
Suggests techniques and evaluation criteria for information sources and services available on the Internet. The need for qualitative judgements about library materials and information sources is upheld and accepted techniques and evaluation criteria for printed reference works are outlines. The emergence of non-book materials and electronic information formats has created the need for new techniques and criteria relating specifically to online services and CD-ROM products. Use of the Internet by library and information workers is examined, establishing that the majority of current traffic is communications-based. The authors suggest that networked information sources require the development of additional techniques and criteria for evaluation if they are to be used by information professionals. The potential issues in establishing such a list are discussed
