    Abstract
A survey in spring 94 indicates that most prominent book vendor provide: cataloguing records, authority control and shelf ready book. Considers the advantages and disadvantages of using book vendor cataloguing. Currently most libraries use book vendor supplied cataloguing to process approval books. Explains the process. Procedures worked out by the fast cataloguing project, PromptCat run by OCLC, Yankee Books and Michigan State Libraries may simplify work flow further

    Abstract
Considers whether, when there is a choice, a back-of-book indexer should use a duplicate entry or a see reference. Guidelines suggest that it is preferable to use the duplicate entry if it would not add to the length or complexity of the index. Studies 1.100 see references in 202 back-of-book indexes and concludes that 22% of the see references should have been replaced by duplicate entries. Failure to select a duplicate entry instead of a see reference occurs most frequently in science and techology books and in indexes with no subheadings

    Abstract
Comments on Douglas Hofstadter's index to his book 'Le ton beau de Marot: in praise of the music of language'. Hofstadter took charge of the book design, typography, typesetting and copy-editing, and also compiled the index which covers 23 pages of 3 columnes and is set in a practically illegible 4-point. Although the index breaks all the rules of indexing, it is a masterly creation showing the author's industry, exhuberance and wit. Summarizes Hofstadter's own remarks on how creating the index gave hin new insights into what his book was essentially about

    Abstract
Part of a larger study which aims to: empirically investigate book-index usage, behaviours, and the extent to which specific print index features affect a user's search for information; and to examine these features in an electronic environment and to determine the optimum specifications for indexes in electronic texts by gathering evidence from a controlled user study. Provides an overview of the research project, focusing on a subset of the results from the study of hard-copy book indexes. Describes observable behaviours of a sample of users when consulting different variations of a hard copy book index. Suggests a preliminary model at 3 levels of abstraction repressing users' behaviours when using a book index

    Abstract
Although the 'information poor' are already present, the arrival of a much greater gap between the 'information poor' and 'information rich' is forecast in the book: Sovereign individual, by J.D. Davidson and W. Rees-Mogg. Concludes that, if the events forecast in the book come about, there will not be an information society but an unacceptable society

    Abstract
Reviews the following products for librarians and library users: Librarian's helper (LH) Online; Statmaster, and Women of Influence. LH Online is a stand-alone online catalogue which serves as a search mechanism for a previous unsearchable bibliographic database. Statmaster combines data from the County and City Data Book (1988), the 1991 State and Metropolitan Area Data Book, the most recent US Census and Economics and the 1990 US Census. Women of Influence is a rare example of women's studies software

    Abstract
Reports on a study which aimed to determine the extent to which cataloguing can be reduced when cataloguing a book for a single screen minicat results from a search using the surname of the author of the book. The results show that the percentage of books having personal authors that are catalogued in a research library that will become entries in a 1 screen minicat is 35.6 when searched. Library could significantly reduce cataloguing expenditures by simplifying cataloguing nearly 2/5s of the time

    Abstract
This paper describes a new OPAC system called The Book House and discusses its relevance as a solution to current OPAC developments. The Book House is an interactive, multimedia, online public access catalogue system designed to support casual and/or novice end-users in information retrieval. It runs on a Macintosh and is available on CD-ROM and disks in English and Danish (it can be purchased from Risø for $100). It comprises an interface and module for classifying and indexing fact and fiction books in the database called Book House Write. It uses icons, text and animation in the display interface in order to enhance the utility of the system for the general public. Both words and pictures can be used for searching, which makes the system suitable for all age groups. It plays on users' previous experiencees with computer games to support learning by doing something in an enjoyable way. A prerequisite for the design of The Book House was a new approach to cognitive analysis of retrieval in libraries. Based on the success of this approach, it is claimed that OPAC systems will only be really useful and widespread (1) when their domain and task characteristics allow supplementary information to be added to existing descriptions of book content in online card catalogues in order to match end-users' intentions and needs, and (2) when the user interface and routes to the databases are configured as an integrated and uniform set of displays which match the search strategies of users, as well as their mental capabilities and limitations

    Abstract
Two library classification system interfaces have been implemented for navigating and searching large collections of document and book records. One interface allows the user to browse book records organized by the DDC hierarchy. A Book Shelf display reflects the facet position in the classification hierarchy during browsing, and it dynamically updates to reflect search hits and attribute selections. The other interface provides access to records describing computer science documents classified by the ACM Computing Reviews (CR) system. The CR classification system is a type of faceted classification in which documents can appear at several points in the hierarchy. These two interfaces demonstrate that classification structure can be effectively utilized for organizing digital libraries and, potentiall, collections of Internet-wide information services

    Abstract
In the preparation of a book on how to do a literature search, many inconsistencies were found in the assignment of subject terms. The Library of Congress Subject Headings is cited for not bringing computer languages into a consistent pattern. BASIC and FORTRAN are treated differently in their see also references and are without references to the words "computers" or "computer." Also index terms for the literature search on the "search for extraterrestrial life" showed inconsistent patterns in indexing. Catalogers and indexers need to review the work they are currently publishing and try to decide how to bring some standardization to the construction of subject terms. There is a need to provide a single thesaurus for all English index terms.

Attemps to elaborate the relationships among tasks, user types, and tools for hypertext. A computer system was built for automatically converting books into hypertext and one book converts into Emaccs-Info, Guide, HyperTies, and a variant of SuperBook, called MaxiBook. Compares the performance of 3 classes of users - expers, novices and trainees - with different tasks on these different delivery vehicles, the tasks involving one search question and one browse question

    Abstract
In this paper, we introduce ACS, an automatic classification system for school libraries. First, various approaches towards automatic classification, namely (i) rule-based, (ii) browse and search, and (iii) partial match, are critically reviewed. The central issues of scheme selection, text analysis and similarity measures are discussed. A novel approach towards detecting book-class similarity with Modified Overlap Coefficient (MOC) is also proposed. Finally, the design and implementation of ACS is presented. The test result of over 80% correctness in automatic classification and a cost reduction of 75% compared to manual classification suggest that ACS is highly adoptable
