    Abstract
Explains why data quality is important. Problems that impact data quality include: data corruption due to incorrect conversion, historical and current data have different meanings, the same data has more than 1 data definition, missing data, hidden data, missing granularity, and violation of integrity rules. Suggests an improvement strategy to establish organizational commitment to cahnge what has been done in promoting data quality. Misconceptions that impact data quality are: data quality improves with the introduction of new technology; old data quality will not have an impact on new database development; and data quality is a database administration problem

    Abstract
Describes the dynamics of data migration and provides advice on what data to extract, how to extract the data, what tools to use in planning data migration and how to test that the data transfer has been successful. Recommends that a team of diverse experts with a thorough understanding of the types of data to be converted should lead the process

    Abstract
TOSCANA is a computer program which allows an online interaction with larger data bases to analyse and explore data conceptually. It uses labelled line diagrams of concept lattices to communicate knowledge coded in given data. The basic problem to create online presentations of concept lattices is solved by composing prepared diagrams to nested line diagrams. A larger number of applications in different areas have already shown that TOSCANA is a useful tool for many purposes

    Abstract
University librarians continue to face the difficult task of determining which journals remain crucial for their collections during these times of static financial resources and escalating journal costs. One evaluative tool, Journal Citation Reports (JCR), recently has become available on CD-ROM, making it simpler for librarians to use its citation data as input for ranking journals. But many librarians remain unconvinced that the global citation data from the JCR bears enough correspondence to their local situation to be useful. In this project, I explore the correlation between global citation data available from JCR with local citation data generated specifically for the University of British Columbia, for 20 subject fields in the sciences and social sciences. The significant correlations obtained in this study suggest that large research-oriented university libraries could consider substituting global citation data for local citation data when evaluating their journals, with certain cautions.

    Abstract
Report of a survey 96 (out of 119) US and Canadian member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to determine their use of on-line and CD-ROM data bases, including OPACs. 4 catalogues were identified: on-line mediated searching (97%); CD-ROMs (96%); end-user on-line searching (45%); and locally mounted magnetic tapes (37,5%). The latter option is expected to be the most widely used option in the new future. Although CD-ROM caused some migration from on-line, most migration was from printed sources to CD-ROM. Tables show: on-line hosts most used for intermediary on-line searching; on-line data bases most after searched by intermediaries; end user on-line systems offered by most libraries; the 20 most popular CD-ROM data bases; and the 8 magnetic tape data bases accessible on OPACs

    Abstract
Standard databases handle an abstracted world pertinent to specific problems in terms of alphanumeric data and respond to semantics defined by users and known to the databases. This conventional approach is not well suited to image databases, where the desired information and semantics need to be automatically or semi automatically extracted and and appropriately modelled to facilitate content based information retrieval and data manioulation. Discusses the key issues in content based image data modelling and information retrieval with particular reference to the MUlti-SEmantic Unstructured data Model (MUSEUM) system which is capable of dealing with image representatios of 3 dimensional shapes

    Abstract
Describes and evaluates methods for automatically isolating and extracting biliographic references from the full texts of patents, designed to facilitate the work of patent examiners who currently perform this task manually. These references include citations both to patents and to other bibliographic sources. Notes that patents are unusual as citing documents in that the citations occur maily in the body of the text, rather than as footnotes or in separate sections. Describes the natural language processing technique of template mining used to extract data directly from the text where either the data or the text surrounding the data form recognizable patterns. When text matches a template, the system extracts data according to instructions associated with that template. Examines the sub languages of citations and the development of templates for the extraction of citations to patent. Reports results of running 2 reference extraction systems against a sample of 100 European Patent Office patent documents, with recall and prescision data for patent and non patent citations, and concludes with suggestions for future improvements

    Abstract
Reports results of research to develop an information retrieval technique employing a conceptual distance measure between words and based on a large thesaurus. The techniques is specifically designed for data sharing in large scale autonomous distributed federated databases (FDBS). The prototype federated dictionary system, FEDDICT, stores information on the location of data sets within the FDBS and on semantic relationships exisitng between these data sets. WordNet is used and tested as the medium for bulding and operating FEDDICT

    Abstract
Data, originating in abstractions of realities, and denoting selected aspects, at specific times and places, for particular purposes, are for storage and/or transfer made manifest through representations. Some of the representations also serve as sensualizations (presentations) or vice versa. The use of computers is, however, based on a separation of representation from presentation, necessitating and enabling intentional designs of each, separately or conjointly

    Abstract
Discusses Ranganathan's holistic integrative approach and applications of analytico-methodology. Deals with databases that art mostly object-oriented, factual information bases. Defines data entity, data model and subject. Covers the organization of ides in specialized databases; a generalized subject structure model; designing specialized databases; indexes and searches and user interaction with the system
