    Abstract
Gives a critical review of the new ed. of the Abridged Dewey Decimal Classification, ed. 12. The abridged ed. is widely used in school media centres and in public libraries with small collections. Describes features of the classification scheme that are considered to be particularly helpful for users in these types of library. Advances reasons for the importance of Education Media Services and other users in South Africa to classify media according to the newest edition

    Abstract
The eleventh International ISKO Conference on "Paradigms and Conceptual Systems in Knowledge Organization" was held in Rome, February 23-26, 2010. The proceedings were edited by Claudio Gnoli and Fulvio Mazzocchi and published by Ergon Verlag in 2010. This analysis follows the order of the text of the proceedings, an order prescribed from the abridged scheme for KO literature published in Knowledge Organization, 25, 1998, no. 4, p. 226. Some invited papers, marked with [LR], have been included and are labelled as such in the table of contents. In all, 64 papers were published.

    Abstract
The origin of the abridged edition of the Dewey system goes back to 1894 when an outline of 192 pages based on the full 5th Edition (1894) was issued for small public and school libraries of North America. New editions have appeared regularly following closely the publication of new full editions. An abridged version, which is always in one volume, comprises an introduction, schedules, four tables (namely 1, 2, 3 and 4) only, and the relative index and other minor features of the full edition, and has shorter numbers. Abridged 15 is a logical abridgement of the DDC23 (2011) and is a product of a new approach to development of an abridged edition of the DDC. Its content has been derived from the DDC database applying a set of rules to extract the edition using the new (2010) version of the editorial support system. The revision process has been informed by interaction with an always widening and diversified Dewey community at home and abroad. It aims to improve the currency of the schedules continuing to serve as shelving tool while recognizing its 'other' uses as a spinoff of its simplicity and inexpensiveness.

    Abstract
The Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee (EPC) held its Meeting 117 at the Library Dec. 3-5, 2001, with chair Andrea Stamm (Northwestern University) presiding. Through its actions at this meeting, significant progress was made toward publication of DDC unabridged Edition 22 in mid-2003 and Abridged Edition 14 in early 2004. For Edition 22, the committee approved the revisions to two major segments of the classification: Table 2 through 55 Iran (the first half of the geographic area table) and 900 History and geography. EPC approved updates to several parts of the classification it had already considered: 004-006 Data processing, Computer science; 340 Law; 370 Education; 510 Mathematics; 610 Medicine; Table 3 issues concerning treatment of scientific and technical themes, with folklore, arts, and printing ramifications at 398.2 - 398.3, 704.94, and 758; Table 5 and Table 6 Ethnic Groups and Languages (portions concerning American native peoples and languages); and tourism issues at 647.9 and 790. Reports on the results of testing the approved 200 Religion and 305-306 Social groups schedules were received, as was a progress report on revision work for the manual being done by Ross Trotter (British Library, retired). Revisions for Abridged Edition 14 that received committee approval included 010 Bibliography; 070 Journalism; 150 Psychology; 370 Education; 380 Commerce, communications, and transportation; 621 Applied physics; 624 Civil engineering; and 629.8 Automatic control engineering. At the meeting the committee received print versions of _DC&_ numbers 4 and 5. Primarily for the use of Dewey translators, these cumulations list changes, substantive and cosmetic, to DDC Edition 21 and Abridged Edition 13 for the period October 1999 - December 2001. EPC will hold its Meeting 118 at the Library May 15-17, 2002.

    Abstract
This paper presents the results of an exploratory study to determine literary warrant for topics in electronic resources. The classification numbers in Abridged Edition 14 were used as a starting point. Using the principles of abridgment and expansion in Dewey, a version of the DDC is defined that accommodates the topics found an three diverse Web sites that use Dewey: BUBL, Canadian Information By Subject, and KidsClick! The resulting classes are used to create a database for automated classification of Web resources.

    Abstract
The DeweyBrowser allows users to search and browse collections of library resources organized by the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. The visual interface provides access to several million records from the OCLC WorldCat database and to a collection of records derived from the abridged edition of DDC. The prototype was developed out of a desire to make the most of Dewey numbers assigned to library materials and to explore new ways of providing access to the DDC.
