    Abstract
    Das 11. Internationale Symposium für Informationswissenschaft (151) findet vom 1. bis 3. April 2009 an der Universität Konstanz statt. Die Tagung ist eine Gemeinschaftsveranstaltung des Hochschulverbandes für Informationswissenschaft (HI) und der IuK-Initiative Wissenschaft. In insgesamt 17 Sektionen werden über 33 Vorträge gehalten, die nach strengem Reviewing vom Programmkomitee ausgewählt wurden. Dazu gibt es viele Sondersektionen, so Doktoranden-, Poster- und Firmenpräsentationen.

    Abstract
    Finally, Melvil Dewey fully revealed, in entertaining prose, built on rigorous and deep historical scholarship. This is the definitive biography we've missed for so long. It tells the story of an American archetype?a man imbued with the inventive curiosity, sexism, anti-Semitism, racism, type-A control-freakishness, and reform zeal so characteristic of the power brokers of his time and his nation. The result is a masterpiece of history. It appropriately bears the imprint of the library association he founded and nurtured and which was enlisted for years to coconspire to cover up the darker side of the old boy. Wiegand's (a Dewey historian) penetrating, provocative interpretations add to the readability and pleasure of this fine biography, even his highly arguable view that the persistence of Dewey's design for librarianship means it "will likely remain a marginal profession." To this member of the small club of holders of jobs Dewey once held, it is obvious that Wiegand's work can be used to make the opposite case as well: that it was Dewey who gave librarianship any hope at all of becoming central to modern American society. Either way, you should own and read this brilliant, comprehensive study of the biased crackpot genius to whom we librarians owe so much.?

    Abstract
    Information or Document Retrieval is the subject of this book. It is not an introductory book, although it is self-contained in the sense that it is not necessary to have a background in the theory or practice of Information Retrieval in order to understand its arguments. The book presents, as clearly as possible, one particular perspective on Information Retrieval, and attempts to say that certain aspects of the theory or practice of the management of documents are more important than others. The majority of Information Retrieval research has been aimed at the more experimentally tractable small-scale systems, and although much of that work has added greatly to our understanding of Information Retrieval it is becoming increasingly apparent that retrieval systems with large data bases of documents are a fundamentally different genre of systems than small-scale systems. If this is so, which is the thesis of this book, then we must now study large information retrieval systems with the same rigor and intensity that we once studied small-scale systems. Hegel observed that the quantitative growth of any system caused qualitative changes to take place in its structure and processes.

    Abstract
    This book contributes to discussions within Information Retrieval and Science (IR&S) by improving our conceptual understanding of the relationship between humans and technology. A call to redirect the intellectual focus of information retrieval and science (IR&S) toward the phenomenon of technology-mediated experience. In this book, Sachi Arafat and Elham Ashoori issue a call to reorient the intellectual focus of information retrieval and science (IR&S) away from search and related processes toward the more general phenomenon of technology-mediated experience. Technology-mediated experience accounts for an increasing proportion of human lived experience; the phenomenon of mediation gets at the heart of the human-machine relationship. Framing IR&S more broadly in this way generalizes its problems and perspectives, dovetailing them with those shared across disciplines dealing with socio-technical phenomena. This reorientation of IR&S requires imagining it as a new kind of science: a science of technology-mediated experience (STME). Arafat and Ashoori not only offer detailed analysis of the foundational concepts underlying IR&S and other technical disciplines but also boldly call for a radical, systematic appropriation of the sciences and humanities to create a better understanding of the human-technology relationship. Arafat and Ashoori discuss the notion of progress in IR&S and consider ideas of progress from the history and philosophy of science. They argue that progress in IR&S requires explicit linking between technical and nontechnical aspects of discourse. They develop a network of basic questions and present a discursive framework for addressing these questions. With this book, Arafat and Ashoori provide both a manifesto for the reimagining of their field and the foundations on which a reframed IR&S would rest.

    Abstract
    Founded in 1800 as a resource for lawmakers, the Library of Congress is one of the greatest libraries in existence, with more than 110 million items in holding, including books in 450 different languages, national documents and art works. Conaway (The Smithsonian) investigates the Library's history from the vantage point of the 13 Librarians of Congress, to illustrate how their experiences and contributions have reflected political and intellectual developments in the U.S. Several Librarians of Congress stayed on for decades, dedicating their lives to the institution. The first, John J. Beckley, appointed in 1802 by President Thomas Jefferson, was confronted with an enormous challenge when the original collection was engulfed in flames during the British's burning of the Capitol by the British in 1812. Aimsworth Rand Spofford, appointed by Abraham Lincoln, succeeded in securing copyright deposit at the Library, thus ensuring its place as the national repository. Appointed by William McKinley, Herbert Putnam made the cataloging system available to U.S. libraries, while Archibald MacLeish, appointed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, established the Library as an important cultural center through his acquisitions and literature programs. The current Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington, appointed by Ronald Reagan, has made a good portion of the collection available electronically. This is an engrossing and comprehensive read, as much a history of the people who made the Library of Congress what it is today--a library to the world--as it is a rich chronicle of the magnificent institution.

Den ansonsten streng chronologischen Aufbau der Darstellung lockert der Verfasser mit vielen Illustrationen und kleineren Essays über zentrale Persönlichkeiten der Zeit, großzügige Förderer und Mäzene, besondere Sammlungen sowie einzigartige Erwerbungen und größere Ereignisse auf, die der Entwicklung der Washingtoner Bibliothek ihren Stempel aufdrückten. Dabei spürt er den Erfahrungen und Beiträgen der einzelnen Bibliothekare nach, deren Leben und Leistung er bisweilen detailliert nachzeichnet. Gleichwohl beschränkt Conaway seinen Blick nicht allein auf die Verhältnisse innerhalb der Bibliotheksmauern; er bettet seine Geschichte der Library of Congress in einen breiten Zusammenhang mit der WeIt um sie herum ein und vermittelt so anschaulich,wie die einzelnen Sammlungen in der Zoo-jährigen Geschichte der Parlamentsbibliothek das politische und geistige Leben der USA widerspiegeln.
    Jeder der Bibliotheksdirektoren sah sich mit einer besonderen Herausforderung während seiner Amtszeit konfron tiert: So wurde die gesamte Bibliothek durch den Brand des Kapitols während des britischen Angriffs auf Washington im August 1814 ein Raub der Flammen und mit Thomas Jeffersons Privatbibliothek ein Jahr später wieder errichtet. In den 40er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts musste ein immenser Rückstand von eineinhalb Millionen Bänden katalogisiert werden. Die gigantische Aufgabe,den Kartenkatalog in einen EDV-Katalog umzuwandeln, war in den 80er Jahren zu bewältigen; und die 90er Jahre standen im Zeichen des National Digital Library Program. Gleichwohl prägten auch einzigartige Erwerbungen die Amtszeiten der 13 Bibliotheksdirektoren: Anschaulich erzählt Conaway unter anderem vom Spazierstock Walt Whitmans, dem Nachlass der Gebrüder Wright, den Fotografien aus der Zeit des Bürgerkrieges von Mathew B. Brady, den fünf Stradivariinstrumenten Gertrude Clarke Whitalls oder der Sammlung Leonard Bernsteins. Wer eine wissenschaftlich fundierte, gar kritische Geschichte der Library of Congress erwartet, wird diesen in der Tradition der nordamerikanischen coffee-table books stehenden Band eher enttäuscht zur Seite legen. Der Autor stellt die Einzig- und Großartigkeit der US-Parlamentsbibliothek in den Mittelpunkt seiner Darstellung, deren bisweilen recht ehrfürchtiger Erzählton insofern nicht Wunder nehmen darf, als sie in enger Kooperation mit dem Gegenstand des Buches entstand, der Bibliothek und ihren Bibliothekaren. Sein mit einer kleinen, überschaubaren Auswahlbibliografie endendes Werk richtet sich vor allem an ein interessiertes Laienpublikum, dem die zentrale Bedeutung der de facto zur Nationalbibliothek gewordenen Kongressbibliothek als Schatzkammer nordamerikanischer Kultur und Tradition nahe gebracht werden soll.     Abstract
    Is this book sociology, anthropology, or taxonomy? Sorting Things Out, by communications theorists Geoffrey C. Bowker and Susan Leigh Star, covers a lot of conceptual ground in its effort to sort out exactly how and why we classify and categorize the things and concepts we encounter day to day. But the analysis doesn't stop there; the authors go on to explore what happens to our thinking as a result of our classifications. With great insight and precise academic language, they pick apart our information systems and language structures that lie deeper than the everyday categories we use. The authors focus first on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), a widely used scheme used by health professionals worldwide, but also look at other health information systems, racial classifications used by South Africa during apartheid, and more. Though it comes off as a bit too academic at times (by the end of the 20th century, most writers should be able to get the spelling of McDonald's restaurant right), the book has a clever charm that thoughtful readers will surely appreciate. A sly sense of humor sneaks into the writing, giving rise to the chapter title "The Kindness of Strangers," for example. After arguing that categorization is both strongly influenced by and a powerful reinforcer of ideology, it follows that revolutions (political or scientific) must change the way things are sorted in order to throw over the old system. Who knew that such simple, basic elements of thought could have such far-reaching consequences? Whether you ultimately place it with social science, linguistics, or (as the authors fear) fantasy, make sure you put Sorting Things Out in your reading pile.

    Abstract
    Die 7. Tagung der Deutschen Sektion der ISKO (Internationalen Gesellschaft für Wissensorganisation) thematisierte, anknüpfend an die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung, das Spannungsfeld zwischen wissenschaftlicher Wissensorganisation und der bisher eher vernachlässigten Organisation unterhaltsamer Information unter dem - mehr provozierenden - Titel: Wissensorganisation und Edutainment: Wissensgesellscbaft - Informationsdesign - Unterhaltungsindustrie. Dieses Thema löste eine heftige Diskussion über die Grundlagen der Wissensorganisation und die Herausforderungen der neuen nichtwissenschaftlichen Umgebungen und Technologien aus. Es wurde u.a. die Frage gestellt, ob bereits von einer "Wissensindustrie" gesprochen werden kann, die in ihrer Verschmelzung mit der Unterhaltungsindustrie im "Edutain ment" gipfelt. Besonders rücken dabei auch Aktivitäten im Bereich "virtuelle Lehre" in den Vordergrund, etwa im Zusammenhang mit Internet und entsprechenden Initiativen in Politik und Gesellschaft (Slogan "Schulen und Bevölkerung ans Netz!"). Stand das Internet im Laufe seiner Entstehung zunächst noch ganz im Dienst von innerwissenschaftlicher Kommunikation, so ruft die Kommerzialisierung des Netzes und die Sicherung der Copy rights dann die Unterhaltungsindustrie auf den Plan. Wissenschaft, Kommerz und Kunst scheinen durch zunehmende Medienverschmelzung (WWW, interaktives Fernsehen, das neue Medium DVD, virtuelle Realität) immer enger zu einer neuen zu organisierenden Kulturgestalt zusammenzuschmelzen. An die Wissensorganisation stellen sich damit vollkommen neue Herausforderungen. Neben der Fragestellung "Wissensindustrie" behandelte diese Tagung auch das weitere interdisziplinäre Feld der Wissensorganisation und zwar nicht nur mit dem erleichterten Zugang und Wiederfinden von Wissenseinheiten, sondern auch dem gemeinsamen Erarbeiten von Wissen, seiner Aufbereitung und zielgruppengerechten, ansprechenden Präsentation. Der vorliegende Tagungsband enthält 25 Beiträge dieser Tagung, oft in überarbeiteter, aktualisierter Form (was ein relativ spätes Erscheinen rechtfertigt).

    Abstract
    Ziel aller professioneller Aktivitäten der in der DGI organisierten Informationsfachleute ist es, bedarfsgerecht die Verfügbarkeit von Informationen sicher zu stellen. Als Motto der 60.Jahrestagung und 30. Online-Tagung der DGI bietet diese Zielsetzung den Rahmen für ein vielseitiges Programm, das Information Professionals aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln interessante Einblicke in informationswissenschaftliche Forschung, praktische Anwendungen, das Berufsfeld, die Ausbildungssituation und geplante Projekte bietet. Dabei begleiten uns die zentralen Fragen, unter welchen Bedingungen eine Information für wen heute verfügbar ist, wie sich die Verfügbarkeit auch bei sich wandelnden Technologien und Rezeptionsgewohnheiten für die Zukunft sichern lässt und die alte, doch immer wieder neue Frage nach der 'Dokumentationswürdigkeit' aufgrund von Qualität oder betrieblichen Notwendigkeiten und juristischen Regelungen. Der Band vereinigt die Textfassungen der Beiträge, die durch das Progammkomitee angenommen worden sind, dazu gehören u.a. die suche nach Bildern oder Patenten mit Suchmaschinen, Competitive Intelligence, Sicherung von Primärdaten, Langfristige Nutzbarkeit und Standardisierung, Qualitätskriterien, automatische und intellektuelle Erschließung, Ontologien oder Erfahrungen mit dem Einsatz von Wikis.

    Abstract
    An argument for extending the circulation of knowledge with new publishing technologies considers scholarly, economic, philosophical, and practical issues. Questions about access to scholarship go back farther than recent debates over subscription prices, rights, and electronic archives suggest. The great libraries of the past - from the fabled collection at Alexandria to the early public libraries of nineteenth-century America - stood as arguments for increasing access. In The Access Principle, John Willinsky describes the latest chapter in this ongoing story - online open access publishing by scholarly journals - and makes a case for open access as a public good. A commitment to scholarly work, writes Willinsky, carries with it a responsibility to circulate that work as widely as possible: this is the access principle. In the digital age, that responsibility includes exploring new publishing technologies and economic models to improve access to scholarly work. Wide circulation adds value to published work; it is a significant aspect of its claim to be knowledge. The right to know and the right to be known are inextricably mixed. Open access, argues Willinsky, can benefit both a researcher-author working the best-equipped lab at a leading research university and a teacher struggling to find resources in an impoverished high school. It is apparent throughout the hook that the author deeply believes in the principles behind open access. and his passion and conviction come through in the work. making the hook a thought-provoking and very interesting read. While he offers numerous examples to illustrate his points throughout the work. he does not. however. offer solutions or state that he has all the answers. In that, he succeeds in his goal to craft a hook that "informs and inspires. As a result, The Access Principle is an important read for information professionals, researchers, and academics of all kinds, whether or not the reader agrees with Willinsky."

    Abstract
    This book features theoretical and practical perspectives from a range of disciplines on the challenges of using digital media in interpretation and representation of cultural heritage. In "Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage", experts offer a critical and theoretical appraisal of the uses of digital media by cultural heritage institutions. Previous discussions of cultural heritage and digital technology have left the subject largely unmapped in terms of critical theory. The essays in this volume offer this long-missing perspective on the challenges of using digital media in the research, preservation, management, interpretation, and representation of cultural heritage. The contributors - scholars and practitioners from a range of relevant disciplines - ground theory in practice, considering how digital technology might be used to transform institutional cultures, methods, and relationships with audiences.     The major strength of Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage: A Critical Discourse is the balance of theory and practice achieved by its authors through the inclusion of discussion on digital culture exhibits and programs. By describing the work being done at diverse cultural institutions life is given to theoretical discussions. By relating theory to practice, the work becomes accessible to a broader range of readers. Further, these essays provide many examples of how libraries and museums could partner with each other in the realm of digital culture. The field of museum studies is dealing with the same issues as information and library science with regards to data organization, user behavior, object classification, and documentation schemas. Also, the emphasis on the users of digital cultural heritage and how individuals make meaningful connections with art, history, and geography is another asset of the book. Each chapter is well researched resulting in helpful and extensive bibliographies on various aspects of digital culture. Overall, the work is rich in discussion, description and illustrative examples that cover the subject of digital cultural heritage in terms of depth and breadth. The primary weakness of the title is on the focus on museum studies in the discourse on digital cultural heritage. There is much to be shared and discovered across other cultural institutions such as libraries and local historical societies and a more interdisciplinary approach to the essays included would have captured this. The overwhelming emphasis on museums, unfortunately, may cause some researching and studying digital cultural heritage from another perspective to overlook this work; thereby further dividing the efforts and communication of knowledge in this area. This work is highly recommended for collections on museum studies, cultural heritage, art history and documentation, library and information science, and archival science. This work would be most useful to educators and researchers interested in a theoretical understanding of cultural institutions and user interactions in view of the social and political impact of the evolving digital state of cultural heritage rather than in the specific technologies and specific user studies on the digital cultural heritage.     Abstract
    This book provides a practical introduction to metadata for the digital library, describing in detail how to implement a strategic approach which will enable complex digital objects to be discovered, delivered and preserved in the short- and long-term.
    The range of metadata needed to run a digital library and preserve its collections in the long term is much more extensive and complicated than anything in its traditional counterpart. It includes the same 'descriptive' information which guides users to the resources they require but must supplement this with comprehensive 'administrative' metadata: this encompasses technical details of the files that make up its collections, the documentation of complex intellectual property rights and the extensive set needed to support its preservation in the long-term. To accommodate all of this requires the use of multiple metadata standards, all of which have to be brought together into a single integrated whole.
    Metadata in the Digital Library is a complete guide to building a digital library metadata strategy from scratch, using established metadata standards bound together by the markup language XML. The book introduces the reader to the theory of metadata and shows how it can be applied in practice. It lays out the basic principles that should underlie any metadata strategy, including its relation to such fundamentals as the digital curation lifecycle, and demonstrates how they should be put into effect. It introduces the XML language and the key standards for each type of metadata, including Dublin Core and MODS for descriptive metadata and PREMIS for its administrative and preservation counterpart. Finally, the book shows how these can all be integrated using the packaging standard METS. Two case studies from the Warburg Institute in London show how the strategy can be implemented in a working environment. The strategy laid out in this book will ensure that a digital library's metadata will support all of its operations, be fully interoperable with others and enable its long-term preservation. It assumes no prior knowledge of metadata, XML or any of the standards that it covers. It provides both an introduction to best practices in digital library metadata and a manual for their practical implementation.

    Abstract
    This book, aimed at an international audience, provides an overview of information literacy (IL) in practice; what it is, why it's become so important in the library profession and demonstrates how librarians can cultivate a better understanding of IL in their own organisations. It uses the 'Cookbook' theme throughout to provide a more informal approach, which will appeal to practitioners, and also reflects the need to provide guidance in the form of recipes, tips for success, regional variations, and possible substitutions if ingredients aren't available. This approach makes it easy to read and highly valuable for the busy information professional. It includes an overview of information literacy in higher education, the schools sector, public libraries, the health service and the commercial sector.     Der vorliegende Sammelband bietet einen aktuellen und umfassenden Überblick über die Aktivitäten bei der Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz in britischen Bibliotheken. Mit dem Titel wird die Erwartung erweckt, das Buch zeige Handlungsempfehlungen auf. Leider wird der praxisbezogene Ansatz nicht von allen Autoren gleichermaßen verfolgt, so dass einige Aufsätze eher zum spartenbezogenen Fortschrittsbericht geraten sind. Ein komplettes Kurs-Design wird in keinem der Kapitel geboten - dies ist aber auch nicht Anliegen des Buchs. Die Übertragbarkeit der Konzepte auf den deutschen Sprachraum ist begrenzt. Zu unterschiedlich sind die Rahmenbedingungen im Bibliothekswesen selbst, aber auch im Ausbildungssystem und den Förderprogrammen. Dennoch bietet das vorliegende Werk interessante Einblicke in die - gegenüber Österreich und Deutschland stark fortgeschrittene - Praxis der Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz im britischen Bibliothekswesen sowie einige nützliche Tipps und Hinweise für Gestaltung eigener Lernangebote. So ist The Information Literacy Cookbook für den deutschsprachigen Raum nur teilweise ein Kochbuch, i.S. einer Handlungsempfehlung für die Vermittlung von lnformationskompetenz, als vielmehr eine Studie über die britischen Essgewohnheiten. Plieninger): "Guy St. Clair wagt mit diesem Buch den ganz großen Wurf, er diskutiert nicht weniger als ein neues Profil für die Informationsberufe, deren Aus- und Fortbildung sowie ein Entwicklungskonzept für das Wissensmanagement in Unternehmen. Im Informationsmanagement ist er als Autor wohl bekannt - er gibt bei Saur die Reihe heraus, in der auch dieses Buch erschienen ist-, im Bibliothekswesen war er für den Bereich der One-Person Librarians (OPL) von Bedeutung, stand er doch in den USA und auch in Deutschland am Anfang deren »Bewegung«. Nun also ein neues Berufsbild und neue Ausbildungsformen als Entwurf, sagen wir gleich: als Utopie. Schauen wir aber ein wenig genauerhin. Zertifizierte Aus- und Fortbildung Am Anfang seiner Überlegungen steht die These, dass keiner der herkömmlichen Informationsberufe - Bibliothekar, Dokumentar und Archivar - den Anforderungen so ganz entspricht, dass auch die Aus- und Fortbildung für diese Berufe im Argen liegt, wie Schließungen von Hochschulen und fortwährende Studiengangs- und Curriculumsrevisionen zeigen. Er versucht daher, den gordischen Knoten zu durchschlagen, indem er einen neuen Beruf des »Knowledge Workers« konzipiert, der sich aus der Konvergenz des Informationsmanage ments, Wissensmanagements und des strategischen, arbeitsorientierten Lernens ergeben soll. Obwohl er zu Anfang neben Spezialbibliotheken auch wissenschaftliche und Offentliche Bibliotheken diskutiert, beziehen sich seine späteren Überlegungen vor allem auf die Spezial- und hier insbesondere auf die Firmenbibliotheken beziehungsweise -informationszentren. Und auch hier sind es weniger die kleinen und mittleren Firmen mit ihren One-Person Libraries als die großen Firmen mit umfangreicheren Informationsdienstleistungseinheiten, auf die seine Überlegungen passen. Bei ihnen soll, ähnlich den Firmen-»Universitäten«, wie wir sie bereits von großen Konzernen her kennen, ein »Knowledge Services Learning Institute« implementiert werden, das die Ausund Fortbildung für die im Informationssektor Beschäftigten organisieren und zertifizierte Kurse und Abschlüsse anbieten soll.
    Dadurch wäre gewährleistet, dass die Aus- und Fortbildung nahe an den aktuellen Bedürfnissen der Arbeitsstelle und doch nach hohem Standard durchgeführtwird. Für die Zertifizierung der Kurse und Abschlüsse soll ein unabhängiges, internationales »Knowledge Council« eingerichtetwerden, das neben der Zertifi-zierung auch Forschung betreiben und einen Austausch ermöglichen soll. Es werden also internationale Standards angestrebt, die die Qualitätssicherung und Vergleichbarkeit der bei den lokalen Trägern angesiedelten Fortbildung gewährleisten sollen. Konzept fiir große Verhältnisse Das Ziel dieses Konzepts ist die Einführung eines Systems des professionellen Lernens für Wissensarbeiter, das der Wissensentwicklung und der Wissensverteilung (»Knowledge Development and Knowledge Sharing«) im Unternehmen direkt zugute kommen soll. Ziel soll ein exzellenter Service im Wissensmanagement sein und ein sich selbst verstärkender Prozess des Lernens der Organisation in Gang gebrachtwerden. Man könnte St. Clair vorwerfen, dass seine mit vielen Zitaten aus der Managementliteratur versehenen Überlegungen nicht konkret genug seien, er möchte aber erklärtermaßen erst einmal einen Rahmen abstecken, in dem so etwas funktionieren könnte. Und das macht er gut: In den Kapiteln, in denen es um die Einführung des Lernzentrums geht, werden knüppeldick strategische Hinweise samt Checklisten gegeben, wie man das innerhalb der Firma angehen kann, um ein solches Projekt einzuführen. Am Anfang der Konzeption steht beispielsweise ein »LearningAudit«, der ähnlich dem aus dem Bibliotheksmanagement bekannten »Information Audit« die Bedürfnisse und Strukturen im Aus- und Fortbildung erhebt. Und da St. Clair Management aus dem Effeff kann, sind auch die folgenden Schritte hervorragend beschrieben. Die Vision und ihre Umsetzung kann also sehr gut nachvollzogen werden.
    Schwerpunkt betriebliche Bildung Wie schon gesagt, es ist ein Konzept, das auf große Verhältnisse passt. Eine Anpassung der primär auf Firmen bezogenen Überlegungen an größere wissenschaftliche und Öffentliche Bibliotheken wäre leichter zu vollziehen als eine Anpassung an kleinere Einheiten. Hier wäre eine solche permanente Fortbildung innerhalb des Trägerrahmens sicher schwer zu organisieren und ihr eine solche Priorität einzuräumen, wie St. Clair es vorschlägt. Wenn aber die Ausund Fortbildung Träger übergreifend, beispielsweise bei einem Regionalverband, organisiert wird, verpufft der starke Impuls, der auf die Organisation selbst zurückwirken soll. Weiter stimmt skeptisch, dass das Konzept sich ganz und gar auf die betriebliche Bildung stützt. Wie wir aus mannigfachen Umstrukturierungsprozessen von Organisationen wissen, wird da oft lediglich mit Begriffen an der Oberfläche operiert, ohne dass - beispielsweise aus Gründen der Macht oder der Trägheit von Mitarbeitern - tiefere Veränderungen stattfinden. Blaupause für Veränderungsprozesse Insofern also ist dieser Rahmen nur bedingt tauglich für eine Umsetzung. Dennoch gehört dieses Buch nicht nur in die Hand von Hochschullehrern, Bibliotheksleitern und von Managern größerer Firmen, sondern auch in die Hand jener, die mit der Weiterentwicklung des Informationswesens betraut oder daran interessiert sind: Selbst wenn keine Umsetzung eins zu eins infrage kommt, so ist der Text sehr inspirierend für die Antwort auf die Frage, wie die Aus- und Fortbildung vor dem Hintergrund steigender Anforderungen in Folge der Entwicklung des Informationsbedarfs hin zu einem Wissensbedarf umstrukturiert werden könnte. Und nicht nur das: Von St. Clair kann man allemal lernen, wie man einen Veränderungsprozess strukturell anpacken kann. Der Text eignet sich daher sowohl als großes Konzept oder als »Denkpartner« für eigene konzeptionelle Überlegungen. Inspirierend ist er allemal, das beigefügte Sachregister hilft beim punktuellen Zugriff auf einzelne Sachverhalte."
