    Abstract
    After a short presentation of major background principles used in BSO construction, the authors consider the most important structural peculiarities and spheres of application of this system. Some specific remarks deal with subdivisions within several major headings. In general, the BSO is viewed as a reasonable and up-to-date structural outline of modern knowledge and a useful tool to interconnect or switch between information systems

    Abstract
    The terms which comprise an entry in an index can be arranged in various ways. The use use roles or facets such as 'thing-action-part-effect' under which terms can be categorized allows the use of citation orders which preserve the syntactic relationships between terms in a string. Alphabetization and rotation in context are simple methods but with certain disadvantages for the users. The citation order of BTI results in a detailed index using punctation to indicate relationships. PRECIS incorporates prepositions which preserve necessary entries. Articulated indexes use natural language phrases displayed under selectes subject headings. These methods could be used to construct book indexes

    Abstract
    Based on a paper presentend to the Documentation Research and Training Centre 'Seminar on classification and indexing in social sciences', Bangalore. An analysis of a detailed survey on facet-analysed subject strings in the field of social sciences. Subject strings of 4 typers were administered as a stratified sample of responses to identify the gaps in semantic connotation of terms. This survey has helped to idetify the possible aberrations in the semantic connotations due to the presence or absence of terms. It was found that use of prepositions, conjunctions and other role indicating terms gives semantic clarity. The syntax of speciator terms may have to be varied according to the respondent groups. It was found that if the number of component terms in a subject string increases beyond a certain limit it gives rise to problems in interpretation of ideas. This indicates a break-even point for formulating subject headings
