    Abstract
The history of civilisation is inextricably bound up with the development of methods of recording and transmitting individual experience to successive generations. Collective memory becomes possible because of the development firstly of writing, then of printing. Now, with new media and methods for storing and transmitting information, and new techniques for facilitating access, collective memory refers not only to the evidence of the past, but to the collective experience of individuals in the present: in electronic systems where texts are encoded and decoded by machines, the reader is not obliged to follow an apriori linear approach, but can navigate freely and evade the confines of the original structure

    Abstract
Paper presented at the conference: Conversion of map catalogues; held by the IFLA Section of Geography and Map Libraries and the LIBER Groupe de Cartothécaires, Barcelona, Aug 93. Summarizes a paper, presented at an earlier LIBER Conference, describing a project for the retrospective conversion, by keyboarding, of maps and cartographic materials for the period 1986-1990 in the Danish National Bibliography. Continues with a account of a cooperative project, SAMKAT, for derived cataloguing of maps by means of the exchanges of computerized bibliographic records. The SAMKAT records for, together with the Danish Union Catalogue, the shared bibliographic database for the ALBA research libraries

    Abstract
In 10 years the network, SIBIL France, has proved the worth of automation absed on shared cataloguing for creating bibliographical data for university libraries. Set up as a pilot project at Montpellier in 1982-83, developed at the Lausanne cantonal and university library in Switzerland and exploited on the machines at the National and University of the South computing centre, the systems links more than 20 university and research libraries. Emphasizes its rapid growth and the importance of quality in the face of competition from the vast data stocks of OCLC and the Bibliothèque Nationale. SIBIL contemplates with serenity its integration with the university library system in 1998

    Abstract
Since the end of the 1980s, Concordia University Archives in Quebec, Canada, has indexed the minutes of the meetings of the institution's Board of Governors. A thesaurus and name authority file have been developed to support the indexing activities. Presents several theoretical concepts associated with indexing: thesaurus; authority control; content analysis; and content representation. Details the indexing tasks involved. Offers examples, combining theory and practice, demonstrating that, even with minimal resources, an indexing system can be introduced in any institution

    Abstract
Since Sep 1996 a group with representatives from the French National Library (BNF), French Joint Catalogue (CCF), Directorate of Scientific and Technical Information (DISTNB), Directorate of Reading (DL) and the Higher Education Bibliography Agency (ABES) has been working on establishing a format for exchanging local data which will accomodtae the needs of all users; conform to international standards and take account of new technological tools (Z39.50-1995). Using pre-existing formats with UNIMARC as the basis, the new format will allow selection of documents by different location criteria, establish conditions of communication and manage interlibrary loan. To date fields have been defined for data on location and management of copies, and for descriptive data on copies

    Abstract
Authority records complement bibliographic records, providing cataloguers with essential subject heading and related information. At present there is no international format standard comparable to ISBD for bibliographic records, though IFLA and the International Archives Council have set up working groups. The essential data form comprises of subject heading, structure, homonyms, with supplementary supporting information. In France MARC formats are most widely used, e.g. UNIMARC(A) for authority records and (B) for bibliographic. The National Library (BNF) is introducing new cataloguing software based on the reorganisation of its authotity files, using integrated INTERMARC. As an experiments, readers will for the first time have access to authority files, thus enriching, completing and clarifying the bibliographic records

    Abstract
RAMEAU, an encyclopedic authorities list, uses a precoordinated indexing language with precise and constricting syntax, which aims to standardise subject access. Based originally in 1986 on the National Library subject heading list, it is used in all French university libraries and in many other libraries in France and abroad. New terms are added in response to user proposals. In 2000 RAMEAU will be fused with the future university systems

    Abstract
In France monograph collections are traditionally catalogues as serials, in accordance with the ISDS definition. Such collections are created by publishers in response to identified intellectual and cultural needs: there are no objective fixed criteria. Practice at the National Library of France is based on respecting the integrity of collection projects, and thereafter evaluating both their reality and precision. This work requires continual comparison of publishers' projects with their practices, albeit the information available is insufficient and fragmentary

    Abstract
Users of international libraries, such as the UN library in Geneva, are themselves highly skilled in using electronic information sources and expect to have access to the most up to date equipment. The librarian/user relationship is thus cooperative, with the user often more expert in using new tools than the librarian. There is no formal network of international libraries, which stand outside overall information policies, though libraries such as those of the UN coordinate standards and activities. The role of the librarian in this context, as exemplified by the Genova library, embraces 3 functions: producer (creation of databases and bibliographies eg those of the Department of Human Rights); trainer (continuing education for both colleagues and users); and mediator (making information and documentation available to the public eg CD-ROM and video publications of archive material celebrating the UN's 50th anniversary). With increasing use of the Internet and the personalisation of information, the library is becoming more like a cafe, offering an information space for individualistic users

    Abstract
Over the last decade, the gap between North and South in relation to formats has increasingly limited development of international programmes such as UBC and UAP. At present the need to review formats in the light of network developments such as the Internet is urgent. Presentations covered the Web, limitations of traditional formats eg. MARC, Internet formats eg. Z39.50 and SGML, and multimedia formats, with examples of prototypes for converting traditional systems to international standards. The Internet has defined a new field of action for librarians. It is essential that developing countries share the experience of industrialised countries, with support from governments and collaboration from international organisations, in ensuring harmonious progress to universal compatibility

    Abstract
Describes the building of the Deutsche Bibliothek, inaugurated at Frankfurt on Main in May 1997. Its mission is to produce electronic documents from printed materials. It affers an online catalogue with a multimedia system and is accessible via the Internet. As a centre for national bibliography, it produces around 15 million records per year, both on and off-line. It comprises part of a network of European national libraries which aims to promote the creation of a European virtual library, the constitution of a depository library for digital documents and the definition of cataloguing standards for electronic documents. Access is compatible with systems used by other libraries and information centres. This programme permits the library to play an integrating role in ermany and to cooperate in international projects
