    Abstract
Outlines the history of the cataloguing of incunabula in 19th century Berlin and of the production of the Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke from 1925 to 1994. The method of description established in the 1920s under the direction of Haebler has shown itself to be still the most suitable in the age of information technology. Maximum participation by libraries would speed compilation and it would be in the interest of holding libraries for which the GW would be available as an aid to problems of identification of incunabula

    Abstract
Discusses the possibilities and difficulties encountered when using a thematic index to search contemporary art databanks. Jaconde and Videomuseum, 2 French databanks, are used as examples. the core problems found in the study are the methods and limits of indexing in both systems. A thematic index should be developed that is better adapted to 20th century art, based on the complementary and reciprocal relationship between text and image, and which fully exploits hypertext

    Abstract
Account of the preliminary stages in the Bibliothèque National project to produce data from the national bibliography, the Bibliographie de France, on CD-ROM. The pilot disc was produced in collaboration with the British Library, using software developed by Online Computers, and tested out in 60 establishments in 1988. Results of this experiment showed up problems in installation, and user dissatisfaction with the indexing system, formats, headings, and instruction manual. Overall, however, user feedback indicated a good market for CD-ROM, as a complement to other sources of bibliographical data. The 1st full edition, with 380.000 records covering 1975-89, was produced in May 89, and a 2nd edition is scheduled for Oct 89. Discussions are currently in hand to develop European standards for CD-ROM, to be used by all national libraries.

    Abstract
Discussing the work of the IFLA classification and indexing section, part of the Bibliographic Control Division. Activities related to subject access include (1) Guidelines for subject authority and reference entries; (2) the 1993 Lisbon conference on 'subject indexing: principles and practices in the 90s'; (3) research on the principles underlying subject heading languages; and (4) recommendations for classification data format. Future areas of work include compatibility between indexing languages and multilingual access

    Abstract
Developed to meet the needs of the library at the Université Laval, the Répertoire de Vedettes-matière is used by many institutions and is recognized as the Canadian standard by the National Library of Canada. The Répertoire also supported the creation of a union catalogue network and its use in libraries abroad, especially the Bibliothèque Nationale in France, confirms, this status and guarantees its continuing role in the increasing standardization of subject headings used in the French-speaking world. Concludes the history of the Répertoire and the major events that shaped its progress

    Abstract
Examines the responsibilities and obligations of libraries in an electronic environment. These include: ensuring access, mostly free, to the Internet; training the public to use it; developing research and navigational tools; using the Internet as a gateway; participating in the organization of data; providing access to the documentary heritage; collection development; forging links with other database producers; providng a forum for dissemination projects; speaking out against censorship; and involving users and the local community in the development of databases

    Abstract
The Venice University Institute of Architecture has developed Easyweb, a software package to integrate its heterogeneous non-compatible bibliographic and multimedia databases, standardise access and create internal links, by transferring all existing OPAC applications to the Web. Features include importation of UNIMARC data, multiple window searching, multibase searching and special applications, e.g. circulation management. Easyweb is notable user friendly and has become the point of reference for OPACs in Italy

    Abstract
To illustrate the theoretical analysis presented by J. Maniez published in Documentaliste 34(1997) nos.4/5 presents some concrete examples drawn for experience of the difficulties increasingly faced in trying to make different indexing languages compatible. Various types of problems may be considered: comparing semantic terms and relationships that compose indexing languages, setting standards for writing and vocabulary, and opposing pre and post coordinated descriptors. Proposes several solutions and discusses the need for further applied research in this area

    Abstract
TREC ia an annual conference held in the USA devoted to electronic systems for large full text information searching. The conference deals with evaluation and comparison techniques developed since 1992 by participants from the research and industrial fields. The work of the conference is destined for designers (rather than users) of systems which access full text information. Describes the context, objectives, organization, evaluation methods and limits of TREC

    Abstract
Describes Jules Maciet's collection in the Bibliothèque des arts décoratifs, one of Paris's most accessible specialist art libraries, which offers the researcher an eclectic range of visual materials inclusing rare prints and photographs. It is an exhaustive collection still classified today according to the original system. An index of engravers, publishers and printsellers, and sources serves artists, researchers and other users

    Abstract
All classifications are based on ideologies and Dewey is marked by its author's origins in 19th century North America. Subsequent revisions indicate changed ways of understanding the world. Section 157 (psycho-pathology) is now included with 616.89 (mental troubles), reflecting the move to a genetic-based approach. Table 5 (racial, ethnic and national groups) is however unchanged, despite changing views on such categorisation

    Abstract
In the frame of an issue of the Documentaliste devoted to the history of information science in France, the author of this article looks at the development of the two main families of information languages, hierarchical and analytical ones and attempts to discern how and how much this evolution has been influenced by the elements of information searching systems, literature, indexers, designers, users, searching techniques and indexing techniques

    Abstract
Describes the development of ICONOS, the Documentation Francaise's database for tracking and describing publicly accessible collections of photographs in France. A thesaurus specific to the database was constructed to rationalize and standardise previous work with several different indexing tools. The stages of the thesaurus design included creating a body of descriptors based on those already in use; statistical and qualitative assessment of indexing terms; surmounting semantic and linguistic problems and finally the collection of terminology into a multidisciplinary thesaurus

    Abstract
Examines the concept of reference work and the reference interview. For some years, French librarianship has been open to the idea of reference service but the aspect of relating to the user does not feature in either manuals or in training. The concept of reference interview developed several decades ago, by British and American librarians, has led them to create initial training programmes for this work. Makes practical suggestions adaptation to the teaching of librarianship and information work in France

    Abstract
Users who want to exploit all the information sources on the Web will need an efficient search and selection tool e.g. a directory or search engine. Directories list Web sites and analyze their contents. Describes the behind-the-scenes work of documentalists specialized in surfing, tracking and indexing French language sites for the directory Nomade. Describes the creation of Nomade, its functioning and indexing, and how this new profession of 'cyber-documentalist' is changing the practices and functions of information professionals as they become Internet information organizers
