    Abstract
Report of 2 study days held in Toulouse in Feb 94 by LIBER to discuss applications to date of the SIBIL version of the Brunet-Parguez classification scheme for computerized indexing of books published before 1800, first introduced in 1987. The scheme is an adaptation by Guy Parguez of the 19th century Brunet system. Paricipants were overall satisfied with the basic structure, and agreed plans for further developments, including a new edition of the table, expansion of coverage, and translation

    Abstract
The application developed for products and services offered by companies present INFOMART, the permanent marketplace for information and communications technologies, is an example of a data base that can be accessed simultaneously in the conventional, multi-criteria literature searching way and in a more user friendly fashion by means of a hypertext interface. Information and orientation signposts are thus made available to INFOMART visitors, guiding them and assisting their contacts with participant companies. Describes both document and hypertext features of this information system designed for new converts and specialists alike.

    Abstract
Increasingly texts are produced as electronic documents but each document production system uses its own markup reproduce documentation in different media as they are linked only to the physical structure of the document in question. To overcome these drawbacks, information processing specialists have tried to create general languages which, by taking into account the logical structure of a document, would facilitate its exchange and dissemination in different forms. This is why the ISO has sponsored the development of the SGML which become an official standard in 1986. Explains the logic of this language and its use and summarises its many benefits to librarians and information workers

    Abstract
In 10 years the network, SIBIL France, has proved the worth of automation absed on shared cataloguing for creating bibliographical data for university libraries. Set up as a pilot project at Montpellier in 1982-83, developed at the Lausanne cantonal and university library in Switzerland and exploited on the machines at the National and University of the South computing centre, the systems links more than 20 university and research libraries. Emphasizes its rapid growth and the importance of quality in the face of competition from the vast data stocks of OCLC and the Bibliothèque Nationale. SIBIL contemplates with serenity its integration with the university library system in 1998

    Abstract
Account of the preliminary stages in the Bibliothèque National project to produce data from the national bibliography, the Bibliographie de France, on CD-ROM. The pilot disc was produced in collaboration with the British Library, using software developed by Online Computers, and tested out in 60 establishments in 1988. Results of this experiment showed up problems in installation, and user dissatisfaction with the indexing system, formats, headings, and instruction manual. Overall, however, user feedback indicated a good market for CD-ROM, as a complement to other sources of bibliographical data. The 1st full edition, with 380.000 records covering 1975-89, was produced in May 89, and a 2nd edition is scheduled for Oct 89. Discussions are currently in hand to develop European standards for CD-ROM, to be used by all national libraries.

    Abstract
Since the end of the 1980s, Concordia University Archives in Quebec, Canada, has indexed the minutes of the meetings of the institution's Board of Governors. A thesaurus and name authority file have been developed to support the indexing activities. Presents several theoretical concepts associated with indexing: thesaurus; authority control; content analysis; and content representation. Details the indexing tasks involved. Offers examples, combining theory and practice, demonstrating that, even with minimal resources, an indexing system can be introduced in any institution

    Abstract
Computerized cataloguing is widely used in university libraries in France and tends to involve the networking of catalogues according to one of 3 approved sources: SibilFrance; OCLC; and BN Opale. Examines the ways in which libraries chose their system, the importance of each of the 3 systems, and their productive capacity in relation to their acquisition. Results of a 1992 survey of a sample of 43 French university libraries tends to prove that the cost of these systems are less dependent on the source itself than on the organization of work and staff

    Abstract
Describes the building of the Deutsche Bibliothek, inaugurated at Frankfurt on Main in May 1997. Its mission is to produce electronic documents from printed materials. It affers an online catalogue with a multimedia system and is accessible via the Internet. As a centre for national bibliography, it produces around 15 million records per year, both on and off-line. It comprises part of a network of European national libraries which aims to promote the creation of a European virtual library, the constitution of a depository library for digital documents and the definition of cataloguing standards for electronic documents. Access is compatible with systems used by other libraries and information centres. This programme permits the library to play an integrating role in ermany and to cooperate in international projects
