    Abstract
Originally developed in Switzerland for the Bibliothèque Cantonale et Universitaire in Lausanne, the Systeme Integre pour les Bibliothèques Lausannoises (SIBIL) is an integrated bibliographic system which can support cooperative cataloguing and indexing, regional or national catalogues, interlibrary loans, online access, and interface with commercial databases. Its adoption in 5 French speaking libraries, including ones in France and Luxembourg, has led to the first European llibrary network REseau des Bibliothèques Utilisant SIBIL (REBUS). In a modular format SIBIL can be used for descriptive or subject cataloguing, for downloading records from external databases, as a complete catalogue, or as an online public access catalogue. Since 1977 the system has included music and since 1985, sound recordings can be searched by composer, form and medium. Gives examples of various forms of information retrieval

    Abstract
In Apr 92 the French Library Association (ABF) convened a working group to assess current provisions of bibliographic information. This article reports on the outcomes up to Dec 92, referring to general libraries. The 2 main sources for current French materials are BN-OPALE, the national bibliography; and ELECTRE, its commercial rival. Both are available on CD-ROM; and although ELECTRE is more up to date, it is prohibitively expensive. The other contender is the newly introduced (May 92) National Bibliographic Service, which has serious drawbacks in that it is not available on CD-ROM and disregards UNIMARC format

    Abstract
The Anglo-American Authority File is the working title for an agreement between the british Library and the LoC to develop a common authority file, a copy of which will be held at the British Library and maintained by overnight file transfer. Describes the reasoning which led to the decision, reviews the progress to date and considers the implications for international authority cooperation

    Abstract
Developments such as SGML have led to predictions that catalogues will become unnecessary: in future cataloguing data will be extracted from documents at the printing stage. But such scenarios require closer examination. Early experiments raise doubts about precision and reliability, while the current trend is for quality and standardisation of records rather than sheer quantity

    Abstract
The Internet, especially for information retrieval, is a labyrinth in which it is virtually impossible to find one's way without markers. Web pages are easily created and offer free access but payment is required before anything more useful is retrievd. Evaluation and indexing of these sites is extremely difficults. Librarians and information officers will need to keep themselves informed about databases and guide end users through the labyrinth. Discusses search engines and briefly reviews InfoSeek, Folio Retriever, Star-Web, World Trade Center State, Electronic Library, AltaVista, Yahoo and OCLC's Netfirst
