    Abstract
Users who want to exploit all the information sources on the Web will need an efficient search and selection tool e.g. a directory or search engine. Directories list Web sites and analyze their contents. Describes the behind-the-scenes work of documentalists specialized in surfing, tracking and indexing French language sites for the directory Nomade. Describes the creation of Nomade, its functioning and indexing, and how this new profession of 'cyber-documentalist' is changing the practices and functions of information professionals as they become Internet information organizers

    Abstract
Developed to meet the needs of the library at the Université Laval, the Répertoire de Vedettes-matière is used by many institutions and is recognized as the Canadian standard by the National Library of Canada. The Répertoire also supported the creation of a union catalogue network and its use in libraries abroad, especially the Bibliothèque Nationale in France, confirms, this status and guarantees its continuing role in the increasing standardization of subject headings used in the French-speaking world. Concludes the history of the Répertoire and the major events that shaped its progress

    Abstract
Discusses the apparently unattainable goal of compatibility of information languages. While controlled languages can improve retrieval performance within a single system, they make cooperation across different systems more difficult. The Internet and downloading accentuate this adverse outcome and the acceleration of data exchange aggravates the problem of compatibility. Defines this familiar concept and demonstrates that coherence is just as necessary as it was for indexing languages, the proliferation of which has created confusion in grouped data banks. Describes 2 types of potential solutions, similar to those applied to automatic translation of natural languages: - harmonizing the information languages themselves, both difficult and expensive, or, the more flexible solution involving automatic harmonization of indexing formulae based on pre established concordance tables. However, structural incompatibilities between post coordinated languages and classifications may lead any harmonization tools up a blind alley, while the paths of a universal concordance model are rare and narrow

    Abstract
Reports an experiment, conducted in Mar 95 in the context of a course at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Montreal, which evaluates the information retrieval capabilities of a manual index and a semi automated index developed according to the Bennion method. The application of a formula developed by Bennion shows that the indexes are almost identical

    Abstract
After considerable delay, occasioned by the great variety of establishments to be consulted, the French agency AFNOR has produced a standard for fixed images. Its great flexibility allows for both a range of levels and types of treatment. The basic distinction made between a work and individual copies is especially suited to multiple copies produced from a single matrix

    Abstract
A discussion of developments to date in the field of computerized indexing, based on presentations given at a seminar held at the Institute of Policy Studies in Paris in Nov 91. The methods tested so far, based on a linguistic approach, whether using natural language or special thesauri, encounter the same central problem - they are only successful when applied to collections of similar types of documents covering very specific subject areas. Despite this, the search for some sort of universal indexing metalanguage continues. In the end, computerized indexing works best when used in conjunction with manual indexing - ideally in the hands of a trained library science professional, who can extract the maximum value from a collection of documents for a particular user population

    Abstract
The Cinémathèque, founded in 1963, houses a film collection of some 27.000 items. The manual catalogue had long proved inadequate, and in 1989 computerization was put in hand, on a very limited budget. The initial choice of US software (STAR) in the absence of a suitable French-language program, resulted in a succession of problems, because of the necessity of adapting STAR for French and the lack of finance to buy in specialist expertise. Describes how staff developed database structures, subject headings, and cataloguing rules. It is hoped to complete the project by the end of 1993

    Abstract
Presents a state of the art review of the application oh hypertext searching techniques to online catalogues. The technique improves traditional online catalogues: when consulting the catalogue in a non linear way; and when browsing bibliographic information. New research could improve access to larger databases including thesauri and classification schemes

    Abstract
Account of a limited experimental study at the Bibliothèque Publique d'Informations (BPI), the Paris multimedia public library, to establish a methodology for investigating user interactions with new technology. A wide range of materials are available at the BPI, including CD-ROMs and the Internet. Preliminary observations indicate that users do not follow the pattern dictated by the machine, but take approaches based on their own experience and skills. Setbacks are generally interpreted as defects in the software, not personla failure to master the system. Large scale qualitative abservation, using research methods from the social sciences, would establish a knowledge base for developing user skills to exploit multimedia resources more fully

    Abstract
The ageing of the world population has focused attention on both geriatrics and gerontology and the past few years have seen the emergence of a holistic approach to serving the needs of elderly people. This has resulted in a need to harmonize the terminology of both domains. Reports developments in the creation of a bilingual controlled vocabulary in gerontology and geriatrics, a project undertaken jointly by the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at McGill University and the Centre hospitalier Côte-des-Neiges in Quebec focusing on: the definition and purpose of the thesaurus; methodology; the user; communication between the 2 participants; choice of software; and verification of the vocabulary

    Abstract
A discussion of the problems of creating a natural language list of descriptors for indexing general collections, based on the experience with French terminology by a Swiss library network. The basic principle which emerged from discussion of the candidate terms proposed by subject specialists for adoption by the working group was the necessity for accepting the inevitability of compromise (the requirements of one particular collection do not necessarily apply in other contexts). Ultimately subject headings are only an approximation of the concepts to which they refer the end purpose is essentially practical - assessing documents, not defining reality
