    Abstract
Records management has appeared lately in France to designate the management of organizational documents and electronic data an enterprise must retain as proof of its activities and transactions. An international standard is under discussion to address issues concerned with retention. At the same time, some information professionals are finding themselves increasingly involved with active company records, since the role of records manager requires skills found in the professions of archivists, information scientist and quality controller. Presents examples which pose the question, is records management in fact a new profession or simply a new form of a familiar job?

    Abstract
An article in documentaliste 35(1998) no.1, presented the concept and contexts for the application of records management. This article, devoted to the experience of archivists, continues to focus on professional active and semi-active records management practices and their evolution in different countries and eras. P. Barbat analyzes the discovery in France in the 1960s of active records and the invlovement of both archivists and the departments actually generating the records in their management, and the impact this development has had on archival practices. Also discusses the impact that the international standard now being drafted by ISO will have on the profession. A government and a company archivist also describe their experience

    Abstract
The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) has been developed by the academic technical and medical publishing sectors to enable the management of access rights to information published electronically. The DOI system has evolved from the physical documentary unit identifiers developed in the 1970, physical and document logical unit identifiers developed in the 1980s and recently modified to meet the needs of electronic distribution. This experience is integrated into the standardization, currently in progress on the Internet network, of the identification of resources and their localization. The DOI system is potentially the object of an international standard as the ISBN and the ISSN have been

    Abstract
The Venice University Institute of Architecture has developed Easyweb, a software package to integrate its heterogeneous non-compatible bibliographic and multimedia databases, standardise access and create internal links, by transferring all existing OPAC applications to the Web. Features include importation of UNIMARC data, multiple window searching, multibase searching and special applications, e.g. circulation management. Easyweb is notable user friendly and has become the point of reference for OPACs in Italy

    Abstract
Part 3 of a 3-part series on the electronic management of documents parts 1 and 2 of which appeared in Argus 26(3) 1997 and 27(1) 1998 respectively. Looks at 3 concepts relating to the management and communication of electronic documents within the corporate network: groupware, or the automation of work in groups; workflow, or the management of the flow of information to be treated; and intranet, which indicates the private network of an organization supplying internally the technologies responsible for the success of Internet and the World Wide Web. Considers the advantages of the electronic document operated on computer networks over paper handled through traditional channels focusing on intranet because of the importance it is given as an infrastructure for integration of document management activities and because it represents a major challenge for the information professionals of today

    Abstract
The information explosion on the one hand, and the adoption of legislation concerning records management on the other, have increased the visibility of archivists in the realm of records management and compelled them to consider standardization of classification practices. Discusses the development of various approaches by Quebec archivists and examines different classification schemes for archival records developed over the past 10 years

    Abstract
Discusses the problems associated with the management of knowledge and electronic information and the provision of access within organizations. Emphasizes the fact that having information does not equate with having knowledge and that locating information is only worthwhile if it can be interpreted and used to benefit the organization. Offers some solutions in the form of scanning technology and tools to codify language

    Abstract
Describes how the Bibliothèque Nationale, in order to participate in the establishment of a comprehensive multimedia catalogue by the Bibliothèque de France, undertook to convert the 6.000.000 entries in its many and diverse manual catalogues and load them on to magnetic tape. Discusses the management of the project under the following headings: establishment of the initative, the operations phase, the launching of phase 2, evaluation of the project, and choice of catalogue for the Bibliothèque de France

    Abstract
Knowledge and information have become priority areas in today's society and organizations have come to accept that human resources are indispensable in managing them. The 4 key factors in an organization are believed to be: the excellence of its employees; client satisfaction; good financial management; and performance measurement. Explains how ASTED has faced this period of change and disruption by focusing on these 4 key factors, by breaking down barriers, and by forming partnerships which will increase the visibility of information and guarantee ASTED a strategic position in society

    Abstract
Describes the methodology used to evaluate 5 examples of bibliographic management software currently available. Provides a profile of the Library of the National Assemply of Quebec and the services it offers: reference, research, and reconstruction of debates. Identifies the problems it faces and presents an evaluation of its technical needs, needs relating to data control and bibliographies, and staff needs. Analyzes specialist information and the preliminary list of chosen programmes and compares the software using the following criteria: ease of use; assistance; customization; research; networking capabilities; transferabiblity; and price. Considers reasons for the ultimate choice of library master and discusses the question of staff training

    Abstract
Since Sep 1996 a group with representatives from the French National Library (BNF), French Joint Catalogue (CCF), Directorate of Scientific and Technical Information (DISTNB), Directorate of Reading (DL) and the Higher Education Bibliography Agency (ABES) has been working on establishing a format for exchanging local data which will accomodtae the needs of all users; conform to international standards and take account of new technological tools (Z39.50-1995). Using pre-existing formats with UNIMARC as the basis, the new format will allow selection of documents by different location criteria, establish conditions of communication and manage interlibrary loan. To date fields have been defined for data on location and management of copies, and for descriptive data on copies
