    Abstract
Describes the building of the Deutsche Bibliothek, inaugurated at Frankfurt on Main in May 1997. Its mission is to produce electronic documents from printed materials. It affers an online catalogue with a multimedia system and is accessible via the Internet. As a centre for national bibliography, it produces around 15 million records per year, both on and off-line. It comprises part of a network of European national libraries which aims to promote the creation of a European virtual library, the constitution of a depository library for digital documents and the definition of cataloguing standards for electronic documents. Access is compatible with systems used by other libraries and information centres. This programme permits the library to play an integrating role in ermany and to cooperate in international projects

    Abstract
Considers whether an information system can be designed that is capable of meeting the needs of researchers students' for training and those of the general public for information. Tests a system for specialists to determine whether non specialist could use it and whether other uses could be found for such databanks. This multimedia information system based on natural language text searching uses hypertext, associating texts, images, maps and plans of the Greek site of Delphi. Discusses natural language searching, the respective and complementary contributions of automatic and manual indexing, image and document retrieval from other databanks and the different modalities of interactive searching. Defines the features of this type of information system and assesses the limits and the potential of such a product

    Abstract
TREC ia an annual conference held in the USA devoted to electronic systems for large full text information searching. The conference deals with evaluation and comparison techniques developed since 1992 by participants from the research and industrial fields. The work of the conference is destined for designers (rather than users) of systems which access full text information. Describes the context, objectives, organization, evaluation methods and limits of TREC

    Abstract
The National Library of France (BNF) database, BN-OPALINE, initially developed for computerising the specialised departments' catalogues, has functioned since 1996 as the database for all BNF documents. Accessible on the Internet, notices are in INTERMARC format, with over 500.000 references covering specialised documents, microforms and documents acquired by partner libraries. Eventually BNF-OPALINE will be integrated into the future BNF multimedia information system and form part of the French joint catalogue

    Abstract
Information research using keywords is largely ignored by readers but in medium sized libraries such as that of the City of Science and Industry (Paris), with a multimedia collection of some 200.000 documents, it is the most effective tool. The reader, however, needs guidance in using this technique, and in refining searches to reduce noise. Examples are given demonstrating how keyword searches can identify non-indexed material, documents in other languages, and collective authors

    Abstract
The creation of electronic information in the form of structured documents is gaining popularity. It is thus necessary to develop information retrieval tools fitted to this type of document. Presents the results of a research project aimed at identifying human-computer interface elements that can support information retrieval in structured-document bases. The research included a review of the literature and of existing systems, as well as the design, development, and user testing of a prototype information retrieval system for SGML document bases. Makes 5 recommendations for the design of structured-retrieval systems

    Abstract
Digital documents and Internet access are changing cataloguing practices. MARC formats can accomodate Internet documents by assigning a field for URL but quality control is vital, especially with multimedia catalogues, and new links have to be created. Heterogeneous distant resources can now be searches using the Z39.50 standard, thus enabling access to a wide range of diverse catalogues, and Internet formats are being used to create local systems (intranets). The librarian needs new skills to manipulate digital documents and use information technology tool but the mission is the same: to optimise access to the widest possible range of information

    Abstract
The Venice University Institute of Architecture has developed Easyweb, a software package to integrate its heterogeneous non-compatible bibliographic and multimedia databases, standardise access and create internal links, by transferring all existing OPAC applications to the Web. Features include importation of UNIMARC data, multiple window searching, multibase searching and special applications, e.g. circulation management. Easyweb is notable user friendly and has become the point of reference for OPACs in Italy

    Abstract
Discusses the apparently unattainable goal of compatibility of information languages. While controlled languages can improve retrieval performance within a single system, they make cooperation across different systems more difficult. The Internet and downloading accentuate this adverse outcome and the acceleration of data exchange aggravates the problem of compatibility. Defines this familiar concept and demonstrates that coherence is just as necessary as it was for indexing languages, the proliferation of which has created confusion in grouped data banks. Describes 2 types of potential solutions, similar to those applied to automatic translation of natural languages: - harmonizing the information languages themselves, both difficult and expensive, or, the more flexible solution involving automatic harmonization of indexing formulae based on pre established concordance tables. However, structural incompatibilities between post coordinated languages and classifications may lead any harmonization tools up a blind alley, while the paths of a universal concordance model are rare and narrow

    Abstract
The introduction of multimedia into the library raises new questions concerning who the users are and how best to match services to their needs. An inquiry into the users of CD-ROMs in the Nancy mediatheque offers some answers to the questions. The choice of CD-ROMs and the way in which this service is used difers according to whether the public is active or not, and according to the kind of training followed. Far from being mutually antagonistic, reading of books and consultation of CD-ROMs seem to reinfornce each other

    Abstract
The media centre at the City of Science and Industry, Paris, bases cataloguing practices on user habits, simulating searches which users have done to identify how access can be improved. In relation to the audiovisual viewer, which offers a selection of 3.500 films, this has led to including summaries and closer indexing, so that items can be retrieved by subject, not just by title as in the general catalogue. Economy of indexing can be justified as long as there is more information available from another resource. Analysis of failed searches has shown that wider subject indexing and integration of subject research and keywords would reduce noise. In the same way that physical layout and presentation of collections can help users, so should catalogue structure and organisation

    Abstract
The library, centre of the local network of educational, social and cultural establishments, introduced its multimedia catalogue in 1994. Records assessed by graphic interfaces include all documents and supports: users can call up accompanying text, images, audiovisual extracts, using a series of simple menus. For the librarians, maintaining the catalogue, converting documents into digital form and creating links is time consuming and needs special skills, but the impact on collection use and enhancement of the library's image are considerable, while the availability of digital copies helps conserve fragile documents

    Abstract
Analyzed a special type of man-mchine interaction, that of searching an information system with natural language. A model for full text processing for information retrieval was proposed that considered the system's users and how they employ information. Describes how INIST (the National Institute for Scientific and Technical Information) is developing computer assisted indexing as an aid to improving relevance when retrieving information from bibliographic data banks
