    Abstract
The concept of a system combining information in both textual and pictorial format was first suggested by Vannevar Bush in 1945. The present hypermedia system was originally developed by Tim Berners Lee at CERN in 1989 and provides access to brief documents, which are interlinked and contain text, images, sound and video. The system has become widely available through the WWW, which enables users to 'navigate' through related information. Recent developments include the ability to view objects in virtual reality and the automatic generation of document links

    Abstract
In the Netherlands the PICA network introduced the latest version of its OPAC in 1991. The new OPAC, which is central to the development of the Open Library Network, offers users new methods of information searching. A study of use patterns of the new OPAC at the Royal Library and Groningen University Library has helped to improve screen layout and command structure in preparation for general introduction of the terminals throughout the network

    Abstract
To assist users of the national SURFnet information network in the Netherlands Utrecht City Libraries have developed the Kermit user help package. The Gopher package developed by the University of Minnesota in the United States also enables users to navigate through the system. The Open Bibliotheek Network (Open Library Network) allows users both to access and request items from other library collections via SURFnet. The system thus enables enquirers to male optimum use of library resources in the Netherlands

    Abstract
For literature searchers who create extensive bibliographies, special software is available. Among the most popular of these packages is ProCite from Research Information Systems. The system uses workforms with predefined fields for author, title etc. Through its BilioLink conversion program ProCite enables data to be downloaded from other files. Advantages of the package are its ease of use and links to WWW applications. However, index browsing is clumsy and there is little control over input errors

Despite development of the WWW searchers still experience difficulties following links between sites and cannot be sure that a site contains the required information. 3 software programs developed to guide users through the maze of hyperlinks are: Dynamic diagrams, the Hyperbolic tree, and the Brain. in contrast to the other programs which operate on webservers and display hyperlinks in diagrammatic form the Brain is installed on individual PCs and can be customised to meet users' requirements

    Abstract
The proliferation of electronic databases and reduced library collections require researchers to be familiar with an increasing range of bibliographical resources. To assist users in searching multiple databases the PICA network in the Netherlands has developed PiCarta as a single information source. The servie enables users to access bibliographical databases and electronic journals using Boolean logic, fuzzy operators, and subject weighting. The system is, however, dependent upon indexing methods used in original sources

    Abstract
The library of the Prince Leopold Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium is a specialised research library with some 14.000 books and 550 current periodical subscirptions. Since 1990 the library has used Bib/SEARCH (version 2.9) library management program to provide online catalogue and database information facilities. The system is structured to enable easy transfer of data from other sources, and fields may be defined according to the library' needs. Despite minor problems such as the indexing routine, experience at the Institute has been positive. A new version of the system is currently under development

    Abstract
In the Netherlands the 1st students following the postdoctoral course on integrated document management at Rotterdam's Erasmus University graduated in September 1998. The course lasts for 10 months, including 3 months' practical experience and covers 3 dosciplines: general administration, information management, and archive administration. The aim of the practical experience is to provide students with organisational problems for which they should offer a practical solution. Course leader, Annetsietske Stapel, comments that documentation managers frequently lack funding to put such recommendations into practice, thereby losing long term savings
