    Abstract
    A survey of the literature shows that little is known of how reference enquiries are answered in libraries and how far answers satisfy readers' needs. To remedy this situation a survey was held in 15 academic libraries in the Netherlands. Survey results show that the traditional approach to reference service was the norm despite the need for a more flexible approach. Follow up studies showed that reference satff often lacked in-depth subject knowledge. A national programme is required to provide training and exchange of expertise

    Abstract
    Reply to an article by B. Schaap and W. Dussel in Bibliotheek en samenleving 19(1990) no.4, in which it is suggested that the SISO classification used in adult sections of Dutch public libraries, may be adapted for use in children's libraries. However, experience shows that SISO's highly-structured nater makes it difficult for both adults and children to understand. Moreover, because related aspects of the same subject are scattered throughout the scheme's main categories, the user must first understand how to use a library's cataloue. However, a more useful system is to arrange books in broad categories according to children's interests, e.g. football and horses.     Modern education is concerned with helping children to understand society and a multi-media documentation centre in each school is a necessary teachign aid. Beginning with static book collections, documentation centres should expand into dynamic information sources containing all media and concentrating on current material. Provincial libraries will often provide this service for an egreed fee. Most centres have classified catalogues based upon the Dutch SISO classification system for public libraries.     Abstract
    Developments in electronic communication technology have meda online databases a normal part of library collections. To provide users with direct access to Internet resources the Dutch Royal Library has cooperated with several university libraries in the Netherlands to develop the Nederlandse Basisclassificatie Web. Subject specialists select sources, add English summaries and NBW code, and input them to the online database. A Web desk and training workshops have been provided to assist users, and improvements to the system will simplify search procedures

    Abstract
    To assist users with accessing the growing range of information sources Twente University Library in the Netherlands has developed OBIS (Online Bibliotheek Informatie Systeem / Online Library Information System). OBIS provides access to online databases and a range of library catalogues, including Twente's. However, a survey of staff in the Department of Applied Education and Information Science Studies showed that library services were underused. The survey showed that users relied heavily on printed information and contacts with colleagues. To overcome this a user education programme is currently being developed

    Abstract
    A recent survey at the Royal Library in the Netherlands showed that subject headings are more efficient than title keywords for retrieval purposes. 475 Dutch publications were selected at random and assigned subject headings. The study showed that subject headings provided additional useful information in 56% of titles. Subsequent searching of the library's online catalogue showed that 88% of titles were retrieved via subject headings against 57% through title keywords. Further precision may be achieved with the help of indexing staff, but at considerable cost

To enable research staff to have direct access to information the POINT (Point Information Net) was begun in 1993.     In the Netherlands and Belgium some 50 documentation centres on women's affairs have been created in recent years, ranging from small voluntary centres through university departmental collections to regional and national centres. Increased interest in women's affairs resulted in a joint project by the International Informatiecentrum an Archief voor de Vrouwenbeweging and the Anna Maria van Schuurman Centre to create a thesaurus of indexing terminlogy. Work began in 1988 and the final version was published in 1992. The thesaurus contains some 2.200 terms and 700 references and includes a permuterm index of headings.     In an attempt to reduce administrative costs a survey was undertaken in 1992 of the opportunities for cooperation in governmant libraries in the Netherlands. The survey concentrated on shared cataloguing and subject indexing of periodical articles. The study showed that subject interests varied to much from library to make cooperation cost-effective.     Multimedia databases started to appear on the market in 1989. They are computer databases combining a number of features, including text, images, sound and video, and may appear in CD-ROM, CD-I, floppy disk, or videodisc format. Examples of multimedia products are games, instructional programs, and refrence materials. A study of such media in the Netherlands revealed the limitations of search facilities and the difficulty of reading large amounts of text on screen.     A study of the online catalogues of major academic libraries and databases in the Netherlands shows considerable variation in the form of name used for the author W.F. Hermans. The problem lies with a lack of authority control in headings used in the Dutch national union Pica catalogue.     Abstract
    Programs for converting bibligraphic data are not only of interest to libraries but also to researchers compiling bibliographies. However, few programs are currently available. In choosing a suitable program care must be taken to ensure that it is capable of identifying and converting all fields likely to be encountered, to the required format. Optical scanning can provide a convenient solution for converting printed output to machine-readable format. Increasing acceptance of standardised formats will facilitate exchange of data
