    Abstract
To assist users of the national SURFnet information network in the Netherlands Utrecht City Libraries have developed the Kermit user help package. The Gopher package developed by the University of Minnesota in the United States also enables users to navigate through the system. The Open Bibliotheek Network (Open Library Network) allows users both to access and request items from other library collections via SURFnet. The system thus enables enquirers to male optimum use of library resources in the Netherlands

    Abstract
On 19 Aug 94 a group of readers' advisers met to discuss their problems in Utrecht Provincial Central Library in the Netherlands. The panel felt that too much emphasis had been placed on libraries' information role and that more effort should be devoted to recreational reading through organising lectures and reading groups. It was felt that training sessions should be organised and a network created for the exchange of ideas

    Abstract
Development of the SURFnet network enables libraries in the Netherlands to access the rapidly expanding resources of Internet. Plans are currently in hand to provide SURFnet users with the latest WWW and gopher technology. From Mar 95 the Nederlands Bibliotheek en Lektuur Centrum will make SURFnet available to public libraries. The European Commission is currently considering requests for funding for a number of such projects, including 17 request fro Dutch libraries

    Abstract
The proliferation of electronic databases and reduced library collections require researchers to be familiar with an increasing range of bibliographical resources. To assist users in searching multiple databases the PICA network in the Netherlands has developed PiCarta as a single information source. The servie enables users to access bibliographical databases and electronic journals using Boolean logic, fuzzy operators, and subject weighting. The system is, however, dependent upon indexing methods used in original sources

    Abstract
At Limburg Provincial Central Library and Information Service in the Netherlands the online public catalogue has been replaced by a new system, Foundation. The OPAC network was an automated version of the card catalogue, whereas Foundation has been developed entirely from scratch. The system runs on Windows software and assists even inexperienced users to formulate suitable search strategies. The system accepts online catalogue records from other sources and has attracted considerable intersts from several areas, including the publishing industry

    Abstract
Hitherto, the ISBD for nonbook materials and computer files have provided standards for cataloguing electronic media. However, new technology, particular digitisation with its facility to create multimedia resources, has highlighted the need for new bibliographic standards. In the Netherlands the Royal Library, Pica and SURFnet, in 1993, implemented a project to create standards for networked information resources. The results will provide useful guidelines unitl the publication of an ISBD for electronic resources

    Abstract
In the Netherlands the PICA network introduced the latest version of its OPAC in 1991. The new OPAC, which is central to the development of the Open Library Network, offers users new methods of information searching. A study of use patterns of the new OPAC at the Royal Library and Groningen University Library has helped to improve screen layout and command structure in preparation for general introduction of the terminals throughout the network

    Abstract
In an attempt to reduce administrative costs a survey was undertaken in 1992 of the opportunities for cooperation in governmant libraries in the Netherlands. The survey concentrated on shared cataloguing and subject indexing of periodical articles. The study showed that subject interests varied to much from library to make cooperation cost-effective. Moreover, as too few records were likely to be obtained from the Dutch online union catalogue it was decided that a cooperative network was not feasible

    Abstract
At a conference in the Netherlands in Dec 1995 cataloguing, which has traditionally been regarded as the heart of librarianship, was criticised for being slow and costly. However, the Durch Gemeenschappelijk Geautometiseerd Catalogiseersystem (Shared Online Catalogue Network) enables libraries to contribute and receive good quality catalogue records at substantial savings in cost and time. PICA (Project for Integrated Catalogue Automation), which is responsible for the GGC, is currently examining ways to speed up the process. Other sources for records include library suppliers and external agencies

    Abstract
In the Netherlands, for historical reasons, there have been wide variations in subject indexing practice from library to library. With the creation of the Pica (Project for Integrated Catalogue Automation) catalogue network a start was made to create a subject classification suitable for all types of libraries. In 1985 a working party was formed with representatives from the Dutch university libraries and Royal Library. The working party has been responsible for the creation of the general subject classification which has been in use in the Royal Library, and Groningen, Leiden, Nijmegen, and Twente university libraries since Oct. 91. The system was designed for use in online public access catalogues but may also be used as a basis for collection assessment

    Abstract
As a result of the growing pace of developments in the electronic information industry the EC Commission invited applications for the creation of a data base of producers and their services. Tha contract was awarded to the European Information Industry Association, which in collaboration with ECHO (European Commission Host Organisation) has created the I'M GUIDE (Information Market Guide) service. Information on the products, services and manufacturer is contributed by a network of correspondents. The data bank is updated fortnightly and contains more than 4.000 references. The system is available for online access 24 hours daily. It offers natural language searching in English, french and Italian and a menu-driven system in the 9 EC languages

    Abstract
Multimedia databases started to appear on the market in 1989. They are computer databases combining a number of features, including text, images, sound and video, and may appear in CD-ROM, CD-I, floppy disk, or videodisc format. Examples of multimedia products are games, instructional programs, and refrence materials. A study of such media in the Netherlands revealed the limitations of search facilities and the difficulty of reading large amounts of text on screen. Multimedia publishers will need to overcome these problems in order to stand any chance of success

    Abstract
A study of new information systems and databases shows that insufficient help is provided to enable users to exploit these resources adequately. Despite surveys which show that users rarely employ Boolean logic appropriately in formulating search strategies database producers continue to use it as an indexing tool. Moreover, although much effort has been devoted to developing navigation techniques to search databases, problems still arise with insufficient entry points and links between systems. Resources are currently being channelled into the development of virtual reality systems to help users

    Abstract
Developments in electronic communication technology have meda online databases a normal part of library collections. To provide users with direct access to Internet resources the Dutch Royal Library has cooperated with several university libraries in the Netherlands to develop the Nederlandse Basisclassificatie Web. Subject specialists select sources, add English summaries and NBW code, and input them to the online database. A Web desk and training workshops have been provided to assist users, and improvements to the system will simplify search procedures
