    Abstract
    Die Einführung macht mit den Grundbegriffen der bibliothekarischen Klassifikationstheorie und -praxis sowie ausgewählten Bibliotheksklassifikationen bekannt. Eingangs wird die Problemstellung, für die Klassifikationen eine Lösung bieten sollen, umrissen. Dann werden anhand von Fragen die Aspekte zur Entwicklung und Beurteilung von Klassifikationen allgemein und Aufstellungssystematiken im Besonderen umrissen (Sachgerechtheit und Zielgruppenentsprechung, Gliederung, Schlüsselung und Normung, Notation, Klassenbeschreibung und Terminologie, Umfang und Erweiterbarkeit, Anwendungsregeln, Register). Auch organisatorische Aspekte der Anwendung von Klassifikationen werden umrissen. Kurz beschrieben werden ausgewählte Klassifikationen: Die internationale Dezimalklassifikation DK und die DDC, die Regensburger Verbundklassifikation RVK, die Basisklassifikation, die SfB, die KAB, die ASB. Es folgen ausgewählte Literaturhinweise. Ferner werden Übungen zum Klassifizieren ausgewählter Titel mit Hinweisen auf Möglichkeiten zur Selbstüberprüfung und zur Notationsrevision gegeben

    Abstract
    Mit den Worten 'Licht am Ende des Tunnels' und 'Zielgerade in Sicht' charakterisierte Albrecht Fischer (ekz) den erreichten Stand der Systematik-Revision bei der Begrüßung der Arbeitsgruppe 'ASB-Überarbeitung'. Sie hatte sich vom 8.-10.3.99 zu ihrer Sitzung in Reutlingen getroffen. Der Tagungsort war nicht zufällig gewählt, ist die ekz doch künftig Großanwender der neuen Gliederungslösungen. Ab Nummer 1/2000 sollen die neuen ASB-Notationen im ekz-Informationsdienst transportiert werden. Während der Sitzung beschäftigte sich die Arbeitsgruppe mit 6 Hauptgruppen in unterschiedlichen Beratungsstadien. Im wesentlichen abgeschlossen werden konnten die Teilgliederungen für R,S,U und V. Erstmals standen die Gliederungsvorschläge für die Hauptgruppen W und X auf der Tagesordnung

    Abstract
    Die neue Ausgabe der ASB ersetzt die 1981 im Verlag Bock und Herchen erschienene 3., überarbeitete Auflage. Bei der Überarbeitung wurde die gesamte Terminologie überprüft und an vielen Stellen modernisiert. Die Untergliederungen sind mehr den tatsächlich vorhandenen Beständen angepaßt worden. Parallel zur Überarbeitung der ASB-Gliederung wurde ein Schlagwortfonds aufgebaut. Das alphabetische Register nimmt mehr als die Hälfte der Publikation ein, es umfaßt etwa 18.000 Schlagwörter und Verweisungen. Für die Hand des Bibliothekars gedacht ist eine Einführung in die ASB mit Ausführungen zur Geschichte der ASB und ihrer Überarbeitungen, mit Erläuterungen zu Gliederungsprinzipien und zu Grundsätzen des Schlagwortregisters

    Reply to an article by B. Schaap and W. Dussel in Bibliotheek en samenleving 19(1990) no.4, in which it is suggested that the SISO classification used in adult sections of Dutch public libraries, may be adapted for use in children's libraries. However, experience shows that SISO's highly-structured nater makes it difficult for both adults and children to understand. Moreover, because related aspects of the same subject are scattered throughout the scheme's main categories, the user must first understand how to use a library's cataloue. However, a more useful system is to arrange books in broad categories according to children's interests, e.g. football and horses. To enable sucha method to succeed public libraries and school resource centres must agree a common scheme

    Abstract
    Examines the events which led the Swedish Library Association (SAB) in 1921 to publish a unique Swedish classification system, the SAB system. Its origin is set in the social context of public library development since 1800 and seen in the light of Bostrom's philosophy of rational idealism. This had consequences for stock and classification practice in parish, workers' and study circle libraries. From 1915, SAB began debating classification at annual meetings and in the committee set up in 1917. Library consultants played a major role in the system's development; ahich was created for librarians, not users. The main reason for creating a unique system seems to have been a desire to find a common tool for stock acquisition and organisation which was based on Swedish practice and would function in the Swedish setting. This might explain why Dewey, based on American public library ideas, was rejected. But the picture is complex and can be differently interpretated

    Abstract
    Provides an overview of the installation of electrically and mechanically assisted compact shelving and procedures for relocating over 2.000 linear feet of books, scores, recordings and manuscripts, prior to, during and after installation of such a system at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), Ohio, USA. In the light of concern expressed by librarians that patrons would be dissatisfied with the accompanying restrictions such as reduced browsing capability, slow retrieval, and their need to obtain instruction in operating the shelving, a survey was conducted among graduate and undergraduate students to ascertain their views of electric compact shelving for books and scores in the Music Library of Sound Recordings Archives of BGSU Libraries. The survey identified: apprehension concerning the use of the installation; the adequacy of instructions for use; the level of inconvenience / delay in accessing material; overall satisfaction; and the positive and negative features of the installation

    Reports results of a study to determine the need for an alternative classification scheme for children, whether elementary school children have the ability to use such a classification system and the extent to which the use of colours and symbols as search aids may facilitate their search efforts.
