    Abstract
    Describes the status of library and information science education in Slovenia with emphasis on cataloging and classification courses. The program in the Department of Library and Information Science and Book Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana is reported in detail at both the undergraduate and master's level. Also addressed are requirements to be employed as a librarian in Slovenia and continuing educations opportunities for catalogers.

    Learning to be a serials cataloger can be very challenging due to the changing nature of serials. However, the foundations of serials cataloging are basically the same as for cataloging in general.     Abstract
    Argues against various trends towards the downgrading of cataloguing in librarianship. These include the administrative response to the ready availability of shared catalogue records, the targeting of cataloguing positions when library budgets shrink, the 'supply and demand' attitude of library schools in the USA which less often insist on students studying cataloguing, and the lack of a core and prescriptive curriculum for library professionals sponsored by the ALA. The study of cataloguing and cataloguing theory promotes skills that ensure consistency, predictibility and repeatability of access to materials, and the lack of these skills among librarians harms the services they provide

    Abstract
    The future creation of serial librarians prepared to meet the many challenges of serial control, management, automation, and database management requires a solid background in AACR2 rules, MARC tagging, OCLC conventions, classification and subject analysis. The future profile of a serial librarian will require determination, patience, an eye for detail and common sense to tackle the unpredictable world of serials. Continuing education is inevitable to assure the survival of a serial librarian involved in management and serial crisis.

    This study examines what is taught in sixteen library schools in the United States. The trends and needs of cataloging and classification professionals were analyzed from professional literature and compared with course descriptions.     Abstract
    Future production of qualified first-time catalogers depends on the amount of cooperation between educator/practitioner. Collectively, both educator and practitioner must find common ground in education and preparation for the library student to be fully competent as a cataloger. The proposition of implementing laboratories, curriculum improvement for catalogers, and creation of internships gives the library student a mixture of theory and application, assuring proficiency as a first-time cataloger.

    Cataloguing departments have faced enourmous transitions during the last 20 years due to technolgical advances, changing administrative goals, and shrinking budgets. The responsibilities of professional cataloguers have greatly expanded and now include management, budgeting, and planning. Research indicates that entry-level cataloguers feel unprepared for managerial responsibilities by their graduate education. Educators and practitioners should examine the need for potential cataloguing managers and consider changing library school curricula in an effective and realistic manner to support this trend

    Abstract
    This article describes a training program used in the Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to introduce 52 public service librarians to cataloging and classification. The program utilized specific cataloging samples, and emphasized the application of AACR 2 rules, Library of Congress rule interpretations, OCLC format documents, the Dewey Decimal Classification, and Library of Congress publications emanating from the Subject Cataloging Division. During the three year training period, the public service librarians have gradually assumed responsibility for all original cataloging of monographs.

    The educational requirements and qualifications for employment on the cataloging staff of Processing Services. Library of Congress, are described for both the professional and paraprofessional staff. This is followed by a description of the on-the-job training provided both levels of staff and the ways in which that staff may expand its knowledge through special assignments.
