    Abstract
    Cataloging remains a fundamental component of library and information science and has many lessons to teach the architects of the Internet age. All students can benefit from taking a cataloging course, especially if it stresses cataloging as one specific answer to the problems of managing information and places cataloging within a larger context that also includes indexing and Internet search engines. Students deserve cataloging courses that combine theory and practice, avoid memorization, and require them to show a mastery of core principles rather than picky details. This paper includes specific suggestions on how to make cataloging exciting.

    Abstract
    The debate over whether cataloging courses should be required has continued for many years between faculties in various 'library' schools. To gauge the value of the required UNCG cataloging course and its impact on their professional duties, graduates of the UNCG MLIS program were surveyed during the last quarter of 2001. Of the 191 respondents, whether they had positions as catalogers or not, the overwhelming majority (89%) felt that such a course is essential and should be required.

    Abstract
    This paper explores the online learning experience of seven students in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University. In a class entitled Metadata for Internet Resources, the students developed a distance learning relationship with professional catalogers. Student assignments included posting bibliographic records on the WebBoardTM for mentor input. In an online exchange, the mentors responded by posting their suggestions for improving student records. The interaction between students and mentors is discussed, as is the educational value of distance learning.

    Abstract
    Cataloging experts from across the United States were asked to critique assignments from students enrolled in Professor Gertrude Koh's classes at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois through the use of an Internet bulletin board (WebBoardTM, O'Reilly&Associates, Inc.). This paper examines the mentors' perspective on teaching cataloging and their experience in teaching future colleagues via the WebBoard.

    Abstract
    This paper provides an overview of the current status of cataloging and classification (C&C) education in Japan and looks forward to the development in the near future. First, the current status of library and information science (LIS) education and its major issues are briefly reviewed. Second, the situation of C&C practice in Japanese libraries is briefly reviewed, since it affects C&C education. Third, the present situation and issues in C&C education are examined and described under two categories: education in LIS schools and education in LIS programs offered by other colleges and universities. Finally, on-the-job training and continuing education in the C&C domain are discussed.

    Abstract
    This article describes the education system for librarians and information professionals in Poland and includes a discussion of change agents. The international bibliographic standardization has brought considerable change to this education. Another change factor has been Poland's openess to broader international connections as a result of the country's political and social transformation beginning in 1989. Technological development (computer system applications in libraries and references services) is a third key factor for change in Polish library education. Additionally, the article includes a survey of recent events and the most important institutions. The quality of teaching is examined and suggestions made for future changes.

    Abstract
    The issue of integrating both theory and practice into the graduate cataloging curriculum has been widely recognized as a long-standing obstacle for educators and practitioners alike. One way students can gain practical cataloging experience is through a practicum. In order to gauge cataloger attitudes about practica, an online survey was distributed to entry-level catalogers with less than ten years of experience and who were currently employed at an Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institution. Although the experiences ranged widely, the majority of respondents felt the practicum was a valuable experience that should be formally required within the library science curriculum.

    Abstract
    The community of catalogers (defined as "those who work with you") plays a relatively small role in the formal education process. It plays a greater role in training as new hires talk to their new colleagues, subscribe to electronic discussion lists (especially focused lists such as the Passport for Windows list, LCWeb, AUTOCAT, etc.) and become involved in professional associations, cooperative projects, etc. Its greatest role, however, is in the area of informal continuing education. That is especially true for electronic discussion lists such as AUTOCAT. Such lists fill a gap in the education/training continuum: how to find quick, specific answers to questions when your library lacks either the personnel or print or electronic resources to provide them. They extend the community of catalogers from those who work with you to the entire world.

    Abstract
    The education of cataloguing and classification in China includes university education, continuing education, professional training and is provided at basic training, junior college, undergraduate, and graduate levels. Cataloging, classification, and subject analysis are generally the core courses in the university curricula and offered with other required courses. Recent changes in the curricula have been the adjustment and integration of courses, the application of computer technology, the increase of practice, the update of course contents, and the improvement of teaching methods. The future trends of cataloguing and classification education in China may include: constant improvement of the teaching system, standardization of library science programs, introduction to new topics, promotion of graduate education, enhancement of continuing education and training, and development of online courses.

    Abstract
    K3, work in progress, is an acronym for Kollaboration (collaboration), Kommunikation (communication), and Kompetenz (competence). K3 provides a platform in the context of knowledge management to support collaborative knowledge production in learning environments. The underlying hypothesis states that collaborative discourse conciliates information as well as communication competence in learning contexts. The collaborative, communicative paradigm of K3 is implemented by asynchronous communication tools as a means of constructivist learning methodology. In this paper we will describe a K3 course. The lecture was organized and carried out at two places in two different countries (Germany and Switzerland) with students from different universities in the context of Library and Information Science. The paper informs about the management of the lecture and about the problems we had to run the lecture at two places. The circumstances in coordinating the presentations, the exercises, the examinations and evaluation, and the time schedule are presented. The conclusions of the lecturers and the results of a questionnaire for the students are explained in detail.

    Abstract
    This is a critical descriptive study of the situation of Cataloging as an academic discipline within Library and Information Science studies in Spain. Material and methods: The descriptive analysis of the sectional contents of the General and Specific Guidelines of the degreees of Diplomado (three-year degree) and Licenciado (five-year degree) in LIS and the Curricular Programs of the Spanish University schools or departments. Variables analyzed: the denomination and content descriptors of the course offerings and credit hours. The test-retest method was used, with a qualitative processing of data. Results: General data is given about the studies in LIS: their introduction, the universities that offer them, and the degrees awarded. Cataloging is considered an obligatory core subject matter, and is represented by several courses that present important differences insofar as their denominations, their credits and their character from one curricular program to the next. The average credit requisite for obligatory courses in cataloging in Spain is 14 (1 credit= 10 class hours), and 19.7 if we also consider the electives. At present, this discipline is undergoing a reform that will produce important changes as a result of the adaptation of university studies to the common framework of the European Union.

    Abstract
    Designing an interdisciplinary graduate program in knowledge management requires a good understanding of knowledge processes and the ability to differentiate between information management and knowledge management. Given the complexity of knowledge and the nature of its existence, there is a need for graduate programs to go beyond information management and include in the curriculum disciplines that deal with social, cultural, and economic issues such as communication, cognitive science, and business. An understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge management is necessary for a more balanced and practical approach to the development of a knowledge management curriculum. In this article, the design and development of an interdisciplinary graduate program in knowledge management at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore is reported. The initiation of the program was influenced by the strong demand from the public sector in Singapore for knowledge management professionals. It was developed in close association with the information studies program at Nanyang Technological University. In the first year, the program attracted 230 applicants, of which 45 were selected-22 students came from the public sector and 23 students came from the private sector.
